May Photoshoot Planning - Ideas Ideas

view profile

Please post any ideas or suggestions for the May pdx strobist meetup/photoshoot. Currently we have the date picked out (May 25th 2008), now we need to decide on a great location and think up some great lighting scenarios/shots.

So do you think we should make the May meetups theme be "Sports"?
It seemed that alot of people expressed interest in shooting Sports. And we need to find out if anyone has access to 18+ models that would fit the sport part? So please chime in, if you can help.

Location Ideas:
Outdoor Skatepark
Basketball (Indoors or Outdoors)
Karate Studio

(please let me know your suggestions)

PSU has a soccer field which is really good for flash photography
at night. I also know the school head of Chinese Martial Art school
I brought up this question to him a few weeks before. I am not sure
Kung Fu photography interest everyone or not.

I know a skateboarder, and could probably arrange for him and some of his teammates to do a shoot. Only problem is we would be competing with all the little kids at the skate park the day of the shoot. One thought about the skateboarders. Stamina. They would most likely not last for 6 hours, or however long the shoot was. Well here is a sample shot I took last summer of said skateboarder.

skateboard looks pretty cool, but how do we use strobe on the skaters?

I'm sure we could take over a public skate park easily, it's not like the other skaters couldnt skate through and around us. We should just pick one area at a time and work it to it's potential, then move on to a new spot. I really like the shots you did at the bowl in Vancouver, but I think it would be fun to try something like that with strobe included somehow.
here's a link to the photograph that Black Dog took:

And i think if we do a shoot at a skatepark, we should find other areas around to do other sport shots or model shots.

The skaters can skate a set path each time. We just position the strobes out of their way. So we could have a strobe in the pool with us and other strobes can be on the edge of the pool. This would defiantly be a learning experience on working in a difficult environment.

As far as coordinating with some skaters, I may have access to 2 or 3 tops.

@datangpdx: skateboarding photography has some of the most unique uses of off camera flash. Just google around for skateboarding shots and i'm sure you'll find some good examples of off camera flash being used.

"Photos in skateboarding magazines are very distinctive because they don't rely solely on the Earth's sun or stadium lighting to provide illumination. Under anything but absolutely ideal condition, skateboard photographers furnish their own lights. They generally use small flashes triggered to fire simultaneously with the shutter by radio transmitters "

A good place to get some sport ideas would be over at the Strobist site:

Skateboarding
www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=skateboarding&m=pool&...

BMX
www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=bmx&m=pool&w=7191...

and actually we can shoot skateboard photograph basically anywhere, so keep that in mind..

For the skate/outdoors/sports shots we can do all of them at Pier Park in lovely St. Johns .
View Map Here

Pier Park has a skate park, soccer fields, frisbie golf, a swimming pool, and a fairly wooded area as well.

I really like the idea of doing a shoot at a martial arts studio of some sort. But skateboard photography means that we'll be outside and (hopefully) enjoying the sun.

What guarantee do we have that anyone will actually be there skateboarding? Maybe we should put up a ton of fliers around the place to tell everyone they should come on Sunday to be photographed and that we'll send them digital copies of the images to put on their MySpace pages. Haha. ;)

Thats a great idea. Are we requesting they be 18 or older? I could go pass out a few fliers at the skate park up here in Vancouver. I might get some interest that way. I like the looks of the park near St Johns for the shoot. That complete pipe looks cool.

@Black Dog Photography: Yes make sure they are at least 18+, cause there's always alot of little ones around at a skatepark on the weekend. You could also go to the local skateshops and see if anyone is interested.

@PhotoInference: Yes, rain will always be an issue when planning an outdoor event. But I think we have to take a chance with the outdoor events during the summer.

If anyone knows of a good indoor location that we can use as a backup, please let us know.

Maybe instead of an open invite, someone can chat with a local skate shop and see if there is a "team"/group that we can organize with. I think it will be more successful with an organized group just like we had with Sugar Q.

I have connections with Entelechy, a skate shop in Vancouver. I will go ahead and give them a ring since it sounds like we are going to try and go ahead with this idea. Below is a link to one of their skaters. Just to give you all an idea of what we would be working with.

An alternative indoor location would be Department of Skate just down the road from Mikes old studio.
15 NE Hancock St
Portland, OR 97212

I'm not sure how or if they would charge

yeah I dont want to go that route as a backup....If we ever did anything there we would need to pre-plan the event. Good idea though

Just something to consider with sports...things dont always go as planned...if you are setting up camera or strobes in the skating area...there is a reasonable chance that someone will crash into at least on of them and the equipment might get damaged. Think it would be a cool shoot....but just something to consider when placing equipment or deciding what to bring....

I watched some video from Department of Skate and there is not really any big air potential there. They are more on the safe side. Mostly rails and transfers, no half pipes. Plus I bet they would do us no favors, they are a business. They are doing a reginal event the week before our shoot, and i bet that would be a good place to pass out some fliers. Since Pier Park is a park as well, we should consult with models for regular portrait shots and maybe post on the portland model groups to get more interest. Its better to have too many models/skaters than not enough.

Not having a half-pipe is no biggie, i'm sure that you guy's will be able t get a bunch of really awesome shots.

IF The skate park happens, I think someone should somehow fix flint on the bottom of a board while a skater grinds, sparks EVERYWHERE!

That was my idea until I realized that I wouldn't be able to make it, i'd love to see someone else pull it off...

@Mr.Meeker: that would be a fun shot it the late afternoon, with a slow shutter and rear curtain flash.

Now someone just needs to get the Tail Devil Skid Plate and bring it to the shoot this May:

Check out the 5th MSE Garage Shoot that happened last weekend up in Seattle (part of the Seattle Flickr Meetups group). I like how someone even brought a huge red curtain backdrop and vintage motorcycle.

I'm hoping at our May meetup/photoshoot we can pair off and shoot whatever we want, similar to this event. With skateboarding for people that want to photograph skateboarding, models for people that want to photograph models, etc...And it'll be a very open and creative environment.
