A May Theme

OregonVelo 9:28pm, 14 April 2008
While Jeff is trying to set the date, I am trying to come up with a theme. Actually I had an idea and Jeff suggested I throw it out to the group.

My thought was a sport portrait theme. This group description would be the idea:

There are schools and parks around here that could easily be used for multiple backdrops (soccer, football, volleyball, running and so on). The hope is that our models would come out in athletic apparel.

First off, is there enough interest in this?

Second, does someone have the connections to a group of people that might be interested? Or do we have enough models that are interested in this type of subject?

Sport Portraits sounds like an awesome idea to me!

Will there be anything indoors, eg. basketball? That can be done on a concrete court though.

I know some people who could model, but I dout they'll be in town after the 16th of may.

I'll call them though and see if they can make it.

Shane, I think you are just trying to give Rochelle a reason to come back out in that cheerleader outfit!

The main problem is that each one of these sports could be fun for an entire shoot...Or do we pick a couple and separate people into groups again and rotate throughout the different sports during the day? Personally I could shoot swimming and cheerleading all day

I'm seeing many mini-meets in this; like a morning and afternoon session. Pick two and rotate during noon.

I'm sure we could get teams to participate in this - although I don't know of any personally.

@Shane: Is your idea more or less outdoor sports like baseball? Or other outdoor activities like rock climbing?

My idea was more sport portraits, setup type shots.

I would love to do the sports portraits, this sounds like a great theme which would also give us more room to move around.

I'm not so hot on the sports idea. I mean I think it probably is a good idea from the point of view of strobist workshop opportunities, but I shot enough sports because I had to and other than motor sports, I never really enjoyed it. However if the meeting is held the 17th/18th I'll be out of town anyway.

I agree with Ken on this one, as one of the many photographers for a local sports team, sports really is not something I am up for. At least the events. For portrates? well I am not sure about that either..

I think in situations like this, experienced or not, it presents another chance to practice in a different setting. Some may want to go for a classic portrait while for others, with more experience (or not), it presents an opportunity to try some things you might not get a chance with on your local team. I for one always like to try to get something out of anything and I'm up for this even though I'm not really a sports guy.

I like the idea. I had to shoot the team photo for my daughters team last year after the hired guy flaked twice.

I see it as a good opportunity to deal w/ large group shots, outdoor flash, and portrait-style compositions. All of which I could use help on.

i like the volleyball shot...out of context, beautifully lit and in a field somewhere...

couple of months ago, I went down to Oak Park had indoor roller
blading, there are a few kids doing this roller blade dancing quite
impressive. but I doubt they would allow flash photography inside
the court. but honestly it is very very impressive acrobatic kind of

but I do agree sport photography is quite different than what we
do in the strobe shots mostly are fantasy type of shots or glamor

I have a portable outdoor volleyball set up we could use. It can be set up in grass or sand.

I also have a beautiful orange/red, but very narrow beamed, sea kayak, which might make for some interesting shots. I could bring both or either.

two words:

Fog Machine.
LukeOlsen PRO 10 years ago
@metakephoto: I think volleyball idea would be fun to do.
@datangpdx: What about a RollerDerby team?
@drwhimsy: I like the kayak idea but I think it would be better if we were near some body of water.
@Mr. Meeker: For an outdoor shot that must be some big fog machine!
OregonVelo 10 years ago
I have a badminton set.

@Mr. Meeker: My two words: Bubble Machine

we should have a backup plan for our outdoor shoot, so we can switch gears if the weather is bad. I really want to have a shoot at Sauvie Island this summer (June/July/August)and hopefully back out in Hornings Hideout. But if the weather is horrible on the day, i'd like to still be able to have our shoot somewhere else and continue shooting....

@metakephoto. Where at on the island? There are a LOT of not photo friendly places out there, and there are soem great photog friendly ones as well. I would save the island area for July or Aug. just because this is Oregon.

@Mr. Meeker. I have one as well. I almost brought it to the Dance studio but almost had to much stuff to carry anyhow.. I need to get the fog chiller rebuilt as someone that did not know pitched the cooler I had modified for that away.

@OregonVelo. Why get a bubble machine when you can spend $10.00 and find 15 rugrats and let them have at making the bubbles?
OregonVelo 10 years ago
@strayz01- the bubble machine was on extreme clearance and cost less that $5. Now I don't have to deal with the rats... I mean rugrats. :)

The Bybee Howell house is currently closed, but you could potentially have a few people on the porch??? Sigh.

What are people's thoughts on an indoor skate park?
OregonVelo Posted 10 years ago. Edited by OregonVelo (admin) 10 years ago
I am open to just about anything new. And everything has been new to me so far. :)
sounds interesting...

I can tell you that Black Dog is Skate Shooter Pro

If cheer we could get an All star team.(from a club that would be looking for pics) You would need an older team maybe college. I knew the guy that works for PSU but he got in a little bit (big) of legal trouble with the highschool teams. Most of the highschools parents get picky.

skateboard sounds cool to me

anything related to athletics, or extreme sports sounds good to me!

I've always wanted to shoot lots of sports stuff, I find it really exciting to try and keep up with everything.

motoX, Skateboarding, Basketball, Badminton, I don't care, it all sounds good to me!!
