This is a rain or shine event. This will be for a smaller group of people; the first 7 to signup get it.

Photography possibilities:

Event Photography
Mountain bike racing
Spectators
Possibly a band
Scenery photography

This will be a 'hard start', with the start time being at 10:00 am. We will meet at the McDonalds in North Plains and then drive up together. The location isn't hard to find, it is just faster if you are following someone that knows where they are going. Add if we all get there at the same time we will all be parking in the same location. Also they charge $5 for parking for events like this.

When we get to the race, I will give a brief introduction of do's and don't and some tips on shooting an event like this. More procedure and conduct than technically shooting. At that point we can all walk around together until people feel comfortable and then they can go off on their own.

A side goal of the people attending would be to decide whether they feel that the place would be a good location to have a full blown meet up. I see this place as a location that we could have full day event (maybe even full weekend, camping included), bbq and all. Maybe even invite our brethren to the north.

Attending:
1. datangpdx
2. Mr. Meeker
3. coupeowner
4. dansana
5. GeoFX
6. metakephoto

Question... how are we going to setup our flashlights during mountain bike racing? One on each side of racing lane? In my previous mountain bike shooting (not racing), one of the mountain bike got lost control and almost landed on my camera bag. It was a close call. It might happen again, don't you think? ^_^

@GeoFx - Good question and that is what this part of the meetup is about. In my 5 years of shooting racing, I have only had one flash hit by a peddle, but prior to this year the gear was always on me. Still whether be yourself or your equipment the concept is still the same.

@Metakephoto - this event will go until about 2:00 pm. But people are welcome to leave when they want. I just want everyone to start at the same time so we can have pre-race discussion.

I will be out of contact for a few days. For those of you joining us. Think about a backpack and what gear you can carry. For the most part, heavy light stands are out.

What equipment do you typically take to these things? I would imagine wide lenses and at most two flashes - and of course a lot of bubblewrap.
thinkable straw [deleted] 10 years ago
Sounds good! I'm so Excited!!

I don't have any lightstands, only tripods, but I do have clamps!

If any sort of stands are out of the question, I have a bag full of assorted clamps that we all can use, if anyone thinks they'll need anything.

We can clamp strobes up on trees and the bills of spectator's hats if need be, they don't' need to see!

Mobile light stands (friends and passers by) work well I've found. I've also found that one of my favorite ways to shoot is to use my short TTL cord, although a non-TTL cord is just as useful. Hold that sucker out in front of the rider, find a good slow spot and get right in the action...drinking beer, and yelling at the riders works well too...Well, doing that with the pro and sport riders is good, the beginners and kids don't like it as much...Thats how I got this one, and a few more like it, it is super fun, and even better if you race or at least ride a bit, because some of these guys are amazing athletes.

Shane is right though, bring a comfortable bag, some shoes you don't mind getting muddy, a tripod if you think you'll be doing non-flash stuff, and probably a rain jacket.

I just took my name of the RSVP list (so there's room for 1 more lucky person), I just have too much going on in April..

What I bring: all my flashes, but really one or two will do. There are lots of different things you can do with flash and riders. Do not fear, the riders will not notice your flash. Unless it is in the middle of the trail. :) Pocket wizards. Gorilla pod (flexable tripod), A difusser. Spare batteries and large flash card.
I usually don't shot the complete race 'stobist' sytle. There will be lots of racing and lots of chances for you to get a variety of shots.

Out of curiosity, what do we do with the images after shooting?

OregonVelo 10 years ago
I think with any PDX Strobist meetup, mini or otherwise there is always the desire to have each photographer to post a couple of shots to PDX Strobist on flickr.

Out side of that there are no requirements. I would love it if people would post to this Oregon Bicycle Racing also. It is a group that I started in hopes of being a place for photos by all photographer but right now since the group is new, it looks like a group for my photos (not what I want).

Updated information:

Start time has changed to 10:00. The race has been delayed an hour so we don't need to start as easily.

I confirmed that there is a McDonalds in North Plains, so we will be meeting there. The goal is to have everyone together and to leave the McDonalds parking lot by 10:05.

Bring $5 for parking per car and either pack a lunch or some case for the food vendor that will be there.

I have confirmed that there will be a band there, so if you get tired of biking photos, you can play around with band photos.

Bring hiking shoes, if you don't have hiking shoes, some comforatble walking shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

@metakephot
You should totally bring the fam, these events are always a lot of fun, and so long as you don't mind getting dirty very spectator friendly.

@metakephoto - the fam and I are also thinking about going, we will see how the weather is, the kids and the hubby are excited about it though.

If the weather is decent, I am bringing my 8yo daughter/assistant.

Also, if anyone wants to carpool from SW Portland, I would be happy to drive. We could just meet up at my house.

Suh-wheeett!!!!!
mrjonathanpotter 10 years ago
Sadly I must take my name off the list, I didn't realize that this weekend is my alma mater's race over at Mt. Tabor park, so I feel a bit of an obligation to head over there and snap some shots. But I hope that the season opener treats everyone well, and I get to see some awesome shots.
GeoFX 10 years ago
@OregonVelo - feel sick this morning, I am afraid I will not be able to make it, sory! you guys have fun.

Thanks OregonVelo for organizing this event, it is a lot of fun. Great
to meet all of you guys and having the photo fun together.

David, thank you very much for borrowing me the money, otherwise
I do not know how to avoid the awkward moment with the parking guy.
I will bring the money back next week, and buy you a beer :-)

I hope to see you guys next week
