I'm hoping in the future we might be able to setup some place on the internet to host all the images and people can upload their full files, with a deadline for each shoot. Then someone can burn a CD for each model of the pictures and mail it to them..But i don't know how to set something like that up, so hopefully someone here does?

I just think it would be great for the models to get a disc full of the best shots, and not have to contact each photographer and vice versa...

So let me know your thoughts on this and maybe we can think of the best way to approach to this...

I'm not sure but an MSN group site might work, I'll see if I can set one up and you can have a look at it, tell me if you think it would work or not. It's been a while since I had one and not sure what the limitations are on them. I'll send you a link via flickr mail.

Maybe we can find someone that's willing to use an e-mail like G-Mail and can accept up to 2GB of images. And have everyone put the same header in their e-mail (ie. pdx strobist and the models name) so the person will know the e-mail is somewhat legit and they can just dump the e-mails into individual folders with the models name. Then once the photo deadline hits, they can burn individual CD's for each model and mail them...This way too we will be able to monitor that everyone is submitting at least one image for each model they photographed.

any thoughts on this approach?

Should we send the full-res images or ones the size of what we've got here on flickr?

Do i have a volunteer that would like to monitor a gmail account and send out CD's to the models after the shoots?
dansana 10 years ago
I'll take care of that. I'll get a g-mail act and let you know.

Hey I have a gmail account if you want I can either send out some invitations or just burn the CD for the Models.

Its up to who ever.

Maybe I could send a gmail account to one of the admins...or whatever. That way it could be pdx strobists at g mail.

If folks want to create a specific pdx-strobist.com site I'd be happy to see what I can do about making an easy photo gallery that we can all upload full-res files to. I have a gallery that runs on my site, but it isn't really all that easy to use. I am happy to pitch in the $10 to buy a domain for a year. If people think that a server specifically dedicated to uploading full res files to is worth it I'll look into it. Otherwise I like the current model of shooting files over to the gmail account.

Perhaps we should start a little "tip" jar at the meets so everyone can donate what the want to help send photos/cds to our wonderful models that put up with our crap all day.

I can contribute a server to the group if we want. It has more bandwidth then I use currently. All we need is a domain name, and I can setup a Gallery2 site for us to all use. I will even pay for the domain name.

Only problem is that my server is getting a bit old and slow. I hope to update it at some point, but just don't have a ton of spare funds at the moment. Poor server is a Dual Pentium III 1GHz with 512MB or RAM.

Maybe someone can contribute some RAM?

I think that's cool idea. We can buy a domain name for about $7 / year through GoDaddy. I'm sure if we look around we can find someone willing to host it for us for free.

possible name suggestions:
www.pdxstrobist.com
www.pdx-strobist.com

Or we can go another route and come up with a completely original group name, that can host pdx strobist events on the site. And this would make it possible to open up the group to all avenues of photography, including non-flash related types.

If we go with a "strobist" name lose the dash -- I hate those things. I have to admit that I'm partial to the non-strobist name, however. It's a lot more versatile and a lot of us have interests other than strobes. Either way, though, I'm fine.

sorry I missed the meeting this month. I'm looking forward to March.

May I suggest the tag for each month be pdxstrobist0208 instead of including the day? Those who don't have the dates memorized might find it hard to do a search - like me. :)

Since these are only once a month I thought it would be easier to explain to someone new how to find shots from a specific shoot without having a list of actual date tags that were used throughout the year.

Love what I'm seeing so far! Great job all!

Regarding hosting, I WORK for a hosting company but "free" equates to $200/yr. :( If we go that route I can give administrators full access and email accounts for everyone. Who couldn't use ANOTHER email addy, eh? ;)

@StereoBlind: I like your idea of keeping the tag simple, so i've added it to the list "pdxstrobist0208"

OK, the easier websites are to find and use the more they will be found and used. Lot's of people turn away, give up, or lose interest right away when complications arise. This is also true when memorizing domain names, so I belive thinking up something new would also be a mistake.

A simple www.pdxstrobist.com if we can get it would be the best choice. We've all got it memorized already right?

As for date tags, I agree with Stereoblind. Even if we did have two shoots in one month the number of photos probably wouldn't be high enough to require 2 tags.

PS - I should be loading my shots from the most recent shoot within the next two days.

That's what I've been wondering...
The_Nothing 10 years ago
The idea is to make a place to post high res images available for our models.

I also have a ton of server space and no bandwidth limitations I can make available.

I like the idea. As convenient as flickr is for some, its not a format I much care for...
Stereoblind 10 years ago
Yeah, not a fan of the Flikr either. It has it's uses and purposes as a global picture community but it never grabbed me.

I know I mentioned above working for a hosting company and all but as @The_Nothing made me realize I already paid for my Stereoblind account which doesn't have an active site on it. (Still being worked on.) So if we don't use @The_Nothing's or @Whoowl's offerings I'd be happy to create a subdirectory or subdomain for us to use under mine.
Whoowl 10 years ago
Well, I don't know if we will use the site or not (I am guessing we will), but I have registered the domains pdxstrobist.com, and pdxstrobist.org and set everything up on the server. Anyway... Gallery2 is setup, and waiting for people to register accounts. After a shoot, people can just upload their stuff and hand out the links.

Also just for kicks, anyone that wants a email address from the domains to another place can set it up too. Just email contact me.

For instance: stereoblind@pdxstrobist.org

Sweeeeet Whoowl, looking forward to hearing if it's a go but I think it's great!

Yes, I think Flickr, the way we already use it is best for most of what we do, but I'm for having the URL as an easy way of distributing high resolution versions of the images for our models and nothing more. If we use it for more than that then we get complicated confusing and time-consuming as communication here works fine. I don't want to be checking in two places to read the latest exchanges. Most of us met on Flickr so we're there already, no additional pain.

And one address that goes to all models so there is nothing extra to memorize. The site would simply be a gallery with albums organized by shoot date. The photgraphers names and info could be on the photos (as suggested earlier) or in the caption. Whoowl's already got .com and .org versions of the URL which could both go to the same place (I think).

Like I said before, when things get complicated, non-nerd people and busy people lose interest, so that's my opinion. A simple website with one album per Strobist Meet for high resolution images and Flickr for everything else.
