Does anyone have a recommendation for a good light stand? Are they pretty much universal (or do I need to get something specifically geared towards the flashes I use ... e.g. Canon)? I also want to be able to either put an umbrella or soft box on it later on.

Thanks.

I've been wanting to get this light stand for a while because it folds down to 19", but i've yet to see it in person

But if you want to put larger lights on it and softboxes, i don't know how sturdy it would be. I'd recommend getting a nice air cushioned stand for larger lights. I'm sure bogen makes nice ones, but i bought mine from "white lighting" when i bought my whole setup.

Thanks. This poses a dilemma as I now need to think about portability v.s. stability. Since I don't plan on having to lug it around too much I might take a look at some of the larger ones.

but the larger/heavier the light stand, the less your prone to use it on a normal basis. maybe look into getting a lightweight air cushioned stand. my 10ft air cushioned stands are huge and i use them with my monolights.
