I'm looking for a no-frills flash unit that I can basically take apart (I want to add a long cable for a trigger) to use for light painting (to complement my 550ex) but I don't need any type of sync to the camera. To make a long story short I don't want to worry if it gets dropped, crushed or melts.

The old and classic Vivitar 285 will be a great option for less than 100 bucks.

there you go! i hope it treats you well. might be a good idea to make sure it's not super high voltage before hooking it up directly to your dslr (or even w/ a pc cord)

Point well taken. Last thing I want to do is to toast my camera. It does have a nice solid "brick" feel to it.
