Cool! Please let me know if you guys prefer a different time generally. I just really like the light (and temperature) early. Plus it doesn't take up the entire day. But I'll go with the flow...

I haven't looked into this location at all; Dina suggested it... hopefully the photo ops are worthy.

6:30 is very early but like what Tammy said you still have the whole day!

I just looked up Coral Cove Park and did not get much info - but I did find another place called Blowing Rocks Nature Preserve Jupiter, FL that sounds really cool -

Blowing Rocks Preserve is a magnificent barrier island sanctuary located on Jupiter Island, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. Blowing Rocks protects a variety of natural habitats, including beach dune, coastal strand, mangrove wetlands, tropical hammock and oak hammock. explore a boardwalk with interpretive signs along the Indian River Lagoon, A butterfly garden with native plants, and a beachside nature trail.

The preserve is located at 574 South Beach Road, Hobe Sound, FL 33455-2804. www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/florida/pr...

Thanks Dina. As everyone can see, I changed the thread to reflect the new location. Next time I'll verify my sources before I post!

Thanks Dina. Looks like a good place for a photo walk.

Blowing Rocks is beautiful down by the water. A lot will be determined by the tide. If it's low, you can get down into the sand and shoot into the rock formations. You may want to bring along a light plastic bag of sorts to protect your camera if you're going to shoot down by the water and rocks. This is a great place to do portraits, BTW, but only at low tide.
I'm a little confused on the time from the thread discussion. Is it 9 or 6:30? If it's 9, I'll drag myself out of bed. If it's 6:30, no can do. I'm on meds that knock me out and I'm really dizzy if I get up too early. I'm really not THAT lazy...really! But if I have any hopes of any kind of focus...well...the later the better for me!
I thank you guys very much for setting all this up.

Sorry Sunny! We were actually planning another destination that didn't turn out so well and we were hoping to get sunrise pictures. You (and my friend Denise) are probably thrilled that Blowing Rocks doesn't open until 9am so we can all sleep in.

What I'll do is see if I can figure out what the tide will be like that day. If the timing is not good, maybe someone else can suggest another destination this time, and we can plan Blowing Rocks another day.

Girls... make sure you're looking pretty! We can do portraits of each other. :o)

This sounds great. If I can finish the bird count early enough to get there, I'll do it. Don't wait for me though.

I may just aim to get there for sunrise but the group will meet at 9. I'm sure the beach itself is open but I"ll call and find out what exactly doesn't open until 9.

(Dina, would you be ok with that since we'll probably drive together?)

Last weekend I went to Blowing Rocks to find out if there is anything we should know before our photo walk.

The parking lot entrance on the ocean side is gated as well as the lot on the inlet side and is only opened if the ocean side is full. The small lot will accommodate 7 to 9 vehicles and is a mile or more away from any other parking lot.

I was told the beach in the preserve is only accessible from the main entrance. The plumes of saltwater are created during extreme high tides; for our visit high tide is 9:28 AM. This information if from www.saltwatertides.com. This is not an exact science; hopefully we will be lucky enough to get some good photos.

Beach access fees are $2 per person and $1 per person for Nature Conservancy members

Access to the beach at Blowing Rocks will not be feasible until the park opens. So sunrise shots there are out, if you are planning it. However, there is a park Coral Cove a mile or two south of Blowing Rocks preserve. Price is free and hours are sunrise - sunset, www.co.palm-beach.fl.us/parks/locations/coralcove.htm. This is also a good spot for pictures. There are rocks on the beach as well, so you can get those included in some of your shots. There is also a neat building with steps going up the side. It is a residence but still looks neat and may make a neat back drop for some shots of the girls modeling!! There is also a lifeguard stand and neat walkways down to the beach to take tunnel view shots.

I would suggest, if you want sunrise shots go to Coral Cove, after you finish up there, it is only a couple minute drive to Blowing Rocks.

Excellent! Well, as long as Dina is game (since we're driving together), I think we can have a pre-get together at sunrise at Coral Cove.

According to somewhere online, sunrise is at 7:07am so I'll aim to get there about 20 minutes prior to that.

Also, for those of you who know that area well, can you think of a good place we can meet after Blowing Rocks for breakfast/lunch?
Stephen Grasso PRO 9 years ago
So I am going to plan on being at Coral Cove for the sunrise!

Oh, cool Stephen! After the crazy busy next two weeks I'll have, I'll need this 1/2 day to enjoy myself.
cswan2 9 years ago
Count me in! This is such a coincidence, I was just at both locations about 1.5 weeks ago. Both Blowing Rocks & Coral Cove are excellent for snorkeling by the way.

FYI, the entrance fee at Blowing Rocks is optional -- you just deposit your contribution at the lock box just as you enter the boardwalk.

For those interested in climbing down the rocks, make sure you have slip-resistant sneakers and/or water slippers (if that's the right term). Flip-flops will not do at all! The rocks are slippery & jagged so use caution.

If we're lucky enough to have a storm out at sea, whipping the waves into a frenzy and a high tide (which we will have if Art is correct -- 9:28 am), we'll be extremely fortunate and we'll see why Blowing Rocks has its name. See ya there!

This sounds great. I wish I could join you, but it's not going to be possible because of the bird count that day. I look forward (with envy already) to the gorgeous and dramatic photos I know you will get.
nikcos 9 years ago
That would be a yes from me...thanks for putting this together. Blowing Rocks is the most crazy when its near a full moon and high tide but I don't think that would be safe for anything but underwater gear.
Definately going to bring protection for my gear and please heed the warning about wearing proper shoes. You can get cut up on that coral.

It's been a while since I peeked at this thread - been crazy busy with work (thankfully)! So, yes Tammy, you know I am cool with the pre-meet at Coral Cove for sunrise shots then off to Blowing Rocks at 9am for high tide, sounds amazing! As Tammy mentioned, does anyone know of a place close by we could share breakfast/lunch - maybe at 8am to break up the morning.

I received a breakfast recommendation from a friend in Jupiter, a place called First Watch. Their motto is "Where breakfast people breakfast." Their website says they offer free Wi-Fi & the menu looks delicious.

Here's the pertinent information:
Jupiter - Chasewood Plaza (this is about 1/2 mile W. of I-95 in the Publix Plaza, south side of Indiantown Rd., this will be about 10 min. drive from our photo shoot)
6240 West Indiantown Road
Jupiter, FL 33458

Is the plan to go to breakfast between the sunrise shoot at Coral Cove & before the Blowing Rocks shoot? I wasn't going to get up early enough for the Coral Cove event. I had planned on going to breakfast after the Blowing Rocks shoot. If more people are planning on going to the sunrise at Coral Cove & then breakfast then I will make an effort to make it for that time.

If we get to Coral Cove at 6:30 we'll probably shoot for an hour & 1/2 or so ... not sure if that's enough time in between.

I think Dina & I need to be home by 1 so that might not leave TOO much time after but if it's close, we can at least hang out for a cup of coffee.

What does everyone else think?

I haven't really heard any feedback on this. I think the safest thing to do is plan the breakfast after Blowing Rocks. I do like the idea of that restaurant.

I will be at Coral Cove around 6:30 so I look forward to seeing some of you there, and the rest at Blowing Rocks at 9:00!

I think I'll be getting up to go to the sunrise shoot at Coral Cove too. If I'm not there, however, I'll definitely be at Blowing Rocks at 9:00am. See ya there!

(I'm also up for breakfast after Blowing Rocks)
Sorry I missed today, but looks like it was a good time. Hope to be able to make it to one of them soon. Can't wait to see more of the photos.

Thanks to all who came on Saturday... we had a GREAT time and took some incredible pictures. I don't know about the rest of you but I plan on going back to Blowing Rocks in the near future; maybe next time I'll be motivated enough to get to Coral Cove and then walk up the beach to Blowing Rocks for sunrise.

For those of you who missed it... hopefully we'll see you soon. We missed you.

Next time I am going to bring a stack of ND filters and maybe, JUST MAYBE, walk to Blowing Rocks.
