"The Other Pakistan" Competition

view profile

Max Loxton is a group administrator Max Loxton says:

Guys!!

Let's get ready for the biggest competition ever in the history of PPG.

The Other Pakistan - Looking Side ways

The theme of the competition is to showcase the everyday life in Pakistan for American and Pakistani audiences

Pakistan is a richly textured country with a distinguished history and an increasingly vibrant contemporary cultural scene. This is especially true of the arts, including photography. Within modern photography, content ranges from the yawningly banal and daringly abstract to the uniquely human. It is the latter that the proposed competition and exhibition will attempt to bring to life. “Looking Sideways” wants to showcase a small number of Pakistani amateur photographers who have worked in the human-interest genre and have successfully captured the beautiful and not-so-beautiful in everyday urban and rural life in Pakistan.

To be specific, the contest is aimed at identifying a wide range of images from which to choose the lives of ordinary Pakistanis - no high fashion, no luxury, no controversy. It should include urban and rural environments throughout the seasons, the beautiful in image and spirit as well as the not-so-beautiful. It should include people within their architecture linking contemporary people to their historical environments. The message to the viewer of the selected photographs, hopefully in a traveling exhibition in the US and Pakistan should be of a humanness that reinforces Pakistanis' sense of identity and dignity. In a sense, the particcipants in the contest would let us see how they see their country through photography.

Just as the subjects introduced in such images are individuals with their own identities, so the images conveyed by the various photographers will reflect their own distinct individual visions of Pakistan’s humanity and identity.

The theme of “The Other Pakistan / Looking Sideways” appears timely since the international media have recently focused almost exclusively on a politically turbulent Pakistan, promoting stereotypical images of a violent country infected by fanaticism. “Looking Sideways” aims to look around the screen of stereotypes.

Competition Rules

1- The competition is open for PPG Members only
2- The deadline for the submission is 30th June.
3- Every member can only submit only 5 photos for the competition
4- No membership fee, printing expenses, framing and other expenses are been charged for the participation.

Exhibitions

Out of all the selected photos, the best 30 photos will be selected to be showcased in different cities in Pakistan and America. The exact scedule of exhibitions will be posted later on.

Yasir Nisar

Maxloxton I really like your concept im not sure if this is for the first time that this is going to happen but by reading at the comments it kinda seems like it but not sure but the moment i read it which was the day you created this discussion i was kinda iffy and had alot to say n i still do and dont know where to start from but i know i will be criricized, basically i jus wanted to ask dont you think the concept is now played out ??

" the contest is aimed at identifying a wide range of images from which to choose the lives of ordinary Pakistanis - It should include urban and rural environments throughout the seasons, the beautiful in image and spirit as well as the not-so-beautiful. It should include people within their architecture linking contemporary people to their historical environments."

Eventhough im not from Pakistan but this is all i see in magazines, websites and in this group too. As you state the purpose of the exhibition is to reinforce sense of identity or dignity in pakistani's abroad. You can't jus show the village or town where they were brought up in, or the same old archetcural historic buildings that have been done over and over again. what about showing how everything has evolved since they last left Pakistan??? and as u said "no high fashion, no luxury, no controversy" and also keep mentionay urban life, what's urban life if your not showing the luxury or the high standards of living. I think thats what we really need in the pictures to show how Pakistan is established and how it can even compete in the country that their living in.

I think it would be a good idea to add that dimension in your competition too im still not sure why that was taken out and lookin fwd for your reply. Whenever I visit Pakistan thats how i see that country and thats how i think

But seems like its the first time an exhibition like this is happening. (Correct me if im wrong). Good Luck with everything man

Waqas No body can delete a thread and Comment without a valid reason and i guess that you can be sure of what you say.

Now coming to your main post: You have asked some serious questions and I appreciate them. Let me tell you that most of the tourists and visitors who come to Pakistan come to either see the natural beauty or the old traditional and culture that the country holds which sadly is fading day by day. The luxury and high standards are the modern thing and they are here to stay and foreigners know better what a luxury means to them.

The purpose of the exhibition is to reinforce sense of identity or dignity in pakistani's abroad which is by showing them the real tradition and culture that is sadly fading out. We want to show them the real Culture of Pakistan which is sadly ending up, destroying the heritage and the archetcural historic buildings.

May be we can come up with this theme later on in our other exhibition.

although yasir did asnwer you .. my point here is that ..

Photographing ppl sitting in mcdonalds , KFC or subway is not our culture. our culture is having a heavy breakfast in the farms early in the morning , Tea in road side dhaba and dinner with family .

We need to show our culture , not the western culture which we are so influenced by ( which is not bad as long as we dont forget ours. )

Thanks for ur reply max it wasn't clear to me if we'r trying to attract tourisim with this exhibition or the people already living in states as I read in your description again Tourism and visitors is not mentioned at all or maybe i skipped it somewhere :S

Manitoon your not getting my point If we are targetting people who left for states and are living ther for good 20-30 years. They prolly have more cultural values than pakistan has at this time since it has evolved over time and faded out. Showing the evolvement is a good idea instead of the same old stuff that they were brought up looking at.

But Max you said in the post above the exhibition is about tourisits and Visitors so that kinda makes my point useless and in the topic description you said "The message to the viewer of the selected photographs, hopefully in a traveling exhibition in the US and Pakistan should be of a humanness that reinforces Pakistanis' sense of identity and dignity."

pe-ri-pa-tet-ik says:

I read your comments with great interest. Let me say that the US part of the exhibition is not primarily for Pakistanis who now live in the US or elsewhere overseas but for American younger audiences such as at the university and college level who now form their opinions about Pakistan from the distance and through lopsided media reports. They know that McDonalds and KFC are widespread in Pakistan as everywhere else in the world and that there is pollution and horrible traffic jams in the cities. They don't know anything about the rich culture of Pakistan.

Although Towards Pakistan is to promote tourism I believe that one needs to provide solid background before you can seriously promote Pakistan as a travel destination. We are aiming to provide the best suited images for this purpose and from this competition.

This is my song
This is my song

This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on clover-leaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
Oh, hear my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

-

My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside,
A song of peace.

Arranged and performed by Harmonious Combustion
