About Our Space

Interactive Multimedia Exhibition Space at Te Papa National Museum, New Zealand.

Te Papa (Museum of New Zealand) has developed a permanent, interactive multi-media exhibition in a new spectacular purpose built space. We are seeking photographs and video clip contributions, drawing, painting or text (digitally created or hand drawn work) for the image database. It’s strong, contemporary images we’re after from all around the country.

We want images, photographs or clips that proudly tell our local and regional stories, promote our identities and show our experiences of life in Aotearoa – all to express who we are as New Zealanders.

At the moment we’re building a community of contributors and assembling the opening line-up images which will all be loaded into a media database that will drive two spaces.

How it will work…

There are two spaces – the MAP and the WALL – that are both database-driven.

In the 'MAP', visitors are able to interact with a large satellite map of New Zealand laid out on the floor. Images (moving and still) giving a flavour of various localities play on screens behind a dark glass wall. These screens are only brought to life by visitor footsteps on the map - i.e. feet touching tiny sensors under the floor ignite the relevant screen out of 30 regional screens in total. The Map space is highly interactive.

Around the corner In the 'Wall' space, visitors are able to select images /media from the Image database using touch screens. Images from contributing photographers (you!), filmmakers and artists from all over the country combine with images from the Te Papa collections and slices of television clips and music videos to make up the database. This is all available for the visitor to construct their own mural/story on a 2 metre high Wall. This is a collective space that is about having your say about who you are and what you are into .
All media in this space may be cropped, rotated, drawn on or looped.

This exhibition is going to be in place for 10 years and visitors and contributors can continue to upload content throughout the life of the exhibition.

Other important bits…

˚Preferred format /image specs for still images – 2048 pixels min.

˚We need the location of the photo in the description or as the title of the image - if relevant. This is because of the satellite map of New Zealand on the floor of the exhibition space; we need to be able to tag our images with a region from the title or description to allow the images to be eligible for that space.

˚OurSpace Flickr group – we have set up a group to assist with image submissions as well. So if you’re keen submit your favourite images to the OurSpace group right now!

˚Licencing – images will not become part of Te Papa Collections and will only be held in the exhibition media database for the life of the exhibition.Check out and read the license forms online that spell out in detail the context, how contributions will be treated in both the Map and the Wall, attributions etc, so you can choose whether you want to participate.

Please feel free to email with any further questions you might have at

Group Rules

All photographs submitted must have a minimum dimension capability of at least 2048 pixels

Please state the location of the photograph in the description or title of the image, OR you can TAG the image with the location.

We need to know where on the map of New Zealand your image would play in the exhibition. Also, to make the image easily searchable in the database, we ask that you add at least TWO TAGS to each image that you submit.

Images transferred from the Flickr OurSpace Group pool will be licenced for non-exclusive use in both The Map and The Wall interactives.

Please also visit and create a user account so that your images from the Flickr Group Pool are transferred accurately.
