Just saw this on Blake Andrews blog:
blakeandrews.blogspot.com/2009/01/quiz-8.html

Guess the photos from the stick drawings. I got a couple really easily, but the pool of my photo knowledge is tiny and shallow.

"Boring" (Ben Roberts, HPSC, 2007,8,9). and the drawings are stupid-childish.

First glance and I only know 1, 5 and 11.
BennehBoy 8 years ago
Did an ink covered spider crawl over the paper?
How about people post the ones they know and see how far we get?

If we get them all we can enter the contest under some random name and if we win we can divide the iceberg book up among the contributors.

English doesn't distinguish between you singular and you plural, there's nothing in the challange that says you have to be a single individual to win. You just can't have that book he mentioned.
martinnicholls Posted 8 years ago. Edited by martinnicholls (member) 8 years ago
OK, here goes:
1 - ?
2 - ?
3 - William Eggleston - Adyn and Jasper
4 - Bernd and Hilla Becher - Tall furnaces?
5 - HCB - Behind the Gare St Lazare
6 - Nan Goldin - Trixie on the cot
7 - ?
8 - Walker Evans - Bed, Tennant Farmhouse, Hale County, Alabama
9 - ?
10 - Robert Mapplethorpe - ?
11 - Garry Winogrand - ? (arrivals and departures)
12 - Edward Weston - Cabbage leaf

edit: Trixie, not Tixi.
martinnicholls 8 years ago
Oh, I guess No 1 could be Salgado - Goldmine
Dr Karanka 8 years ago
ha, #3, you're right, the character on the right is black! I thought that it was one of weegee's accident pics
1 - Alfred Stieglitz - Steerage (but Paul should get credit for that)
Street_Clickr 8 years ago
Maybe Dr Karanka should write some book like that. :D

Hey Freudus!

That leaves only 2, 7, and 9 doesn't it?

2 -- no idea -- posed picture in front of a caravan -- D. Lange?

7-- looks like that great Koudelka gypsy picture from a different angle (and the guy is warming up to throw the apple/ball) but appears to feature a cement mixer, so probably not...

9 -- oh, tip of the tongue, possibly.

Edit: John, yes I thought 1 was Steerage, so I guess that's right.
martinnicholls 8 years ago
Hmm... Lange. This is almost there:

Paul Russell99 PRO 8 years ago

John Armstrong aka John Legweak Posted 8 years ago. Edited by John Armstrong aka John Legweak (member) 8 years ago
The Lange id is brilliant. Congratulations guys. I think we are ahead of the guy who's posting answers on the blog now.

P.S. Based on the list so far it looks like all the photographers are famous, even if the images are not necessarily the most iconic ones.
Paul Russell99 PRO 8 years ago
Eh, John?

The Lange photo doesn't look anything like the cartoon, really!
Dr Karanka 8 years ago
2 could be one of those arbus portraits of circus performers? I don't have the book with me... sword swallowers and all that... I don't get the perspective of the drawing, but it looks like maybe the main character is far away from the thing that could be a stage...
Paul, it was the family constellation that did it for me. Otherwise, the image seems sort of partially flipped. I think you should get points even if it turns out to be something else.

Dr Karanka, I don;t really know Diane Arbus's work, but I would be surprised if she weren'r represented in the guy's book.
martinnicholls 8 years ago
hmm. Circus... maybe Bruce Davidson?
Paul Russell99 PRO Posted 8 years ago. Edited by Paul Russell99 (member) 8 years ago
The only one I can see on the web for Davidson that looks similar is that Duffy Circus picture, which doesn't look anywhere near close enough. (Can you tell this is the day I've set aside for doing my tax return. Any distraction will do...)

Dr Karanka 8 years ago
I have one too... could do a few more...
John Armstrong aka John Legweak Posted 8 years ago. Edited by John Armstrong aka John Legweak (member) 8 years ago
I think 7 is Peter Henry Emerson, The Clay Mill.

www.moma.org/collection/browse_results.php?criteria=O:AD:...

P.S. A guy on the site identified 9 as W. Eugene Smith Country Doctor. With the update to the Lange id I think we have all twelve. Should we claim victory on the site - or at least post the ones that no one else has id'ed yet?
Paul Russell99 PRO 8 years ago
Blimey. Full house.
BennehBoy 8 years ago
Perhaps Freudus should post up a completed list, claim victory, have the book signed 'to HCSP' and post an image here? :)
Paul Russell99 PRO 8 years ago
Yeah, Freudus should claim it, as he seemed to know eight straight off, and the other person who posted some on Blake's blog doesn't seem bothered about getting the book...
Dr Karanka 8 years ago
I wrote a comment in blake's blog, paul, maybe you should write another one ;-)

OK, name this one ...

the square is the edge of the photo.
martinnicholls 8 years ago
Thanks guys - I've sort of claimed it. If I get it, how about I hang on to it for a while then pass it on to one of you?

@Paul: Tony Ray-Jones! not sure of the name, but it's on the back cover of the recent bargain book release!

I could tell by the cars. No idea about the photographer though. Anne Geddes?
griff le riff Posted 8 years ago. Edited by griff le riff (member) 8 years ago
lol @ Anne Geddes.
"nearly 1981" is enough of a clue, for now, you'll definitely know the photographer.

and it's a reasonably famous one of theirs.. an image search on google for the photographer's name brings the photo up on the second row.
BennehBoy 8 years ago
diCorcia?
griff le riff 8 years ago
nope.. i can hear you mentally scanning my bookshelf from here.
thechrisproject 8 years ago
One guy leaning on a car, one looking out of it. Both seem to be looking at the camera, which rules out a lot of my guesses. Standing dude has his hand in his pocked and the car in the background has a deliberately drawn person... in the back seat? Or driving?
griff le riff 8 years ago
most of that is right Chris, although hand in pocket man has his eyes closed and the one in the near car should be looking off to the side. Quite hard to convey that with just dots.
The man in the far away car is sitting in the drivers seat.
So the steering wheel is on the right side of the car?

Yeah, sorry, I maybe should have kept my cheating ways to myself for a while longer until the tension had built up. I think I've found a flaw with this game though... try typing "Meal Tree" into Magnum search, and see what comes up as the first image :-p

How about just doing one at a time, i.e. "winner" of the last one, otherwise it will get superconfusing really quickly if dozens of people start posting new drawings. Edit: if it gets boring because no-one can get the drawing, clues are allowed?
martinnicholls 8 years ago
Clue to mine: Not in a factory, as Fabbio suggested, but on the streets. Of New York. In 1985.

How do you guys all get such good results from the magum keyword search? I tried to solve Dr. karanka's latest pic by searching for stick figures stick trees and got this:

Not even close. Well, not right at any rate.

Dan!e1e -- sorry -- I wasn't referring to you (did you see my drawing), or being sarcastic!

I just meant that the more abstract the drawing, the less there is to search for with keywords, etc.

Amazing. I may be able to put up a drawing tonight but in the meantime you all should go around me, as long as you're still playing.

That last one was also a bit like the cover of Mark Power's The Shipping Forecast.

Here's one to fill the gap, I'm sure someone will get this immediately.

No idea.

Griff's looks mightily familiar, Street Clickr's not a clue, and John's looks like a fashion shoot (or I can imagine Leslie Phillips turning up and saying "heeelloooo...).
