Group Description

What gives a neighborhood its flavor? The people that live there. Photographer Leon Levinstein (American, 1910–1988) recognized that the best way to capture the spirit of a place is through candid portraits of everyday people. His spontaneous approach to photography reveals a community's unabashed vibrancy.

In honor of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's recent exhibition Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players: Leon Levinstein's New York Photographs, 1950–1980, share your photos and videos of the characters that define New York City. Photos must be taken within the five boroughs and be geotagged so that we can see them on our group's map.

"A good photograph will prove to the viewer how little our eyes permit us to see." —Leon Levinstein (American, 1910–1988). Listen to excerpts from an archived conversation with this unheralded master of street photography in the Met Podcast.
