Group DescriptionWELCOME TO NOAA'S AURORA SPOTTERS GROUP
Space weather sounds ominous, but electricity grid operators, satellite providers and other groups need adequate warning of solar events to prepare for any impacts.
But space weather also produces the beautiful aurora at both poles of our planet – the Northern and Southern Lights. We get excited just like everyone else about amazing nighttime photographs of auroras. We know some of you are always looking to capture beautiful shots of these natural events.
JOIN OUR GROUP to share aurora images with other Aurora Spotters. To find out when and where auroras are going to occur, check out NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center’s experimental auroral forecast product, which shows where on the planet viewers are likely to see Northern or Southern Lights: helios.swpc.noaa.gov/ovation/ and our Space Weather Facebook page. We’ll also notify group members when significant events are likely in the near future, so you can pull out your cameras.
SHARING: PLEASE BE SURE TO UPLOAD YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOS TO OUR GROUP POOL (please include date taken and location), and consider marking some for the Creative Commons. NOAA staff will identify some of the most compelling submissions to the group, and if those photos are licensed through Creative Commons for re-use, we just might feature some of them on NOAA’s website and on NOAA's social media accounts.
