Richard John “Dick” Grayson was the adopted son of multi-millionaire Bruce Wayne, and the original Robin “the Boy Wonder”, before evolving into the superhero named Nightwing. Richard was the youngest in a family of acrobats known as the “Flying Graysons”, of the Haley’s Circus. He joined the act at a very young age, having been trained in acrobatics while still a toddler. With his parents, Dick is called the “Boy Wonder” of the circus and is expected to become an Olympic champion. While preparing for a performance, Dick overhears Anthony “Boss” Zucco, a well-known and feared crime-lord, threaten the performers unless the circus’s owner pays extortion money. The owner refuses, and that night young Grayson watches in horror as his parents’ high wire snaps, sending them hurtling to their deaths, all while many of Gotham’s elite watch on (including Bruce Wayne). Dick feels responsible, because he didn’t warn his parents in time. Shortly after the tragedy, the millionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne (alias the masked vigilante known as the Batman), rescues Dick from an uncaring juvenile services system. Learning that Dick watched his parents, John Frederick Grayson and Mary Lloyd Grayson, get killed by a mafia boss. Bruce Wayne, takes him in and adopts him as a son after their funeral service. Frustrated by the lack of attention from his new father and the mystery still surrounding his parents’ death, Grayson sneaks out of Wayne Manor one evening to solve the crime on his own - only to stumble into Batman’s secret identity. They succeed in revealing Zucco’s complicity, but the mob boss dies of a heart attack before his arrest. Seeing a reflection of himself in Dick, Batman not only reveals his identity as Bruce Wayne to the boy, but also makes the young orphan the offer of a lifetime: the chance to become his crime-fighting partner, and officially his adopted son. Dick chooses the name Robin, and his training begins. Robin’s destiny has a thematic connection to Batman’s in that both see their parents killed by criminals, creating an urge to battle injustice and crime together. Bruce sees a chance to direct the anger and rage that Dick feels in a way that he himself can’t, thus creating a father and son bond and understanding between the two. Throughout Dick's adolescence, Batman and Robin were inseparable and become costumed crime-fighting heroes, however, as Dick grew older and spent more time as the leader of the team of junior superheroes known as the Teen Titans, he decides to change his identity to Nightwing to assert his independence- (other teenaged heroes would later fill in the role of Robin, carrying on his legacy). As Nightwing, Dick Grayson led the Teen Titans and later the infamous Outsiders (where he discovers that he is the father of Starfire’s baby boy). He soon becomes the protector of Bludhaven, Gotham’s economically troubled neighboring city. Following the destruction of Bludhaven, at the command of Deathstroke, alias “Slade” the Terminator. Nightwing temporarily relocates to New York, after defeating Slade in mortal combat and learns that his fellow Titans: Kid Flash/The Flash II, as twins (a girl & a boy), and Roy Harper- “Speedy” (alias Arsenal/the Red Arrow), has a son with his team member in the Justice League, Hawkgirl. Again Nightwing, assumes Batman’s position as Gotham City's premier crime-fighter and sidekick (while Bludhaven is being rebuilt). He distances himself from his mentor’s shadow when he fully develops his Nightwing persona, wearing a costume which mimics several elements of Batman's own uniform (including an insignia of two bat wings). Grayson pursues another love affair and impregnates Helena Rosa Bertinelli (alias the Huntress), eventually marrying her and having a son of their own, whom they name Bruce, in honor of Batman. Dick Grayson, later inherits Wayne Enterprises, with Batman’s first son; Damian Wayne as a junior partner. Grayson leaves Gotham after learning about Bruce’s tragic death of a heart attack, returning years later when the Joker comes out of retirement, and attempts to kill Wayne’s son, Damian in an effort to stop him from becoming the next “Batman”. Assuming the garb and identity of a new Batman, Grayson’s presence mesmerizes the Joker and the Legion of Doom long enough for Dick to save Damian’s life, kick the Joker’s ass, apprehend and defeat the rogue of villains, with the help of the hero Nighthawk, alias Jason Todd. Grayson proceeds to track the mastermind behind Gotham’s organized crime. At this point, he develops unexpressed feelings towards Barbara Gordan (the illegitimate bastard-daughter of police commissioner James Gordan), who then reveals to him that she is pregnant and having his son. Dick refuses to divorce Helena out of obligation, and Barbara leaves Gotham City with their baby, and is never seen again. Grayson’s son, Bruce eventually becomes the new Robin, the Boy Wonder. Dick continues his adventures as the new Batman, while Damian Wayne recuperates from injuries due to his battle with the Joker and the Legion of Doom. However, Bruce Grayson loses interest in partnering with his father and starts to take on solo missions as the new Robin, and finds himself to be a capable crime-fighter. Batman’s newfound independence and family duties in Gotham leave less time for his former commitments in Bludhaven. When Damian finally recovers with help from his mother, Talia al Ghul, he again assumes his father’s place as Batman, and Dick Grayson takes his family and returns to Bludhaven, where he becomes Nightwing again and his son, Bruce Grayson continues to serve Batman as Robin. Twenty years later, Damian Wayne marries a beautiful woman and conceives a son, who he names Adrian. While Bruce Grayson fulfills his father’s legacy as the next Nightwing and adopts a son of his own!
