If you have more questions, Flickr has a great Frequently Asked Questions section found here:

How should I describe my photo?

On Flickr, users can search group photos using “tags.” For example, if a member of the group would like to see what GYSD looks like in Wyoming this year, the member can search by the tags “wyoming” and “gysd2009.” Please note that you should avoid putting spaces in your tags, so that “northcarolina” becomes the tag for a state with two words—North Carolina. The following tags are required for your photos to be included in our Flickr group:

•Grant (if relevant, e.g. statefarm, disney, etc.)
•your location (e.g. germany, california, ohio, northcarolina, gainesville, china, )
•your zip or postal code (e.g. 20005)

Optional tags (to further describe your picture):
Youth, adult, group, semesterofservice, individual, literacy, environment, cleanup, your city, leadagency, nationalpartner, outdoor, indoor, media, officials, intergenerational, trees, garden, urban, rural, etc.

What makes a good Flickr photo for GYSD?

1) Choose and upload only your best pictures. Some of the best photos:
•Are clear, in-focus, and well lit
•Are close-ups of faces
•Contain event or program-related caps and shirts
•Show the “before” and “after” of your service projects
•Get down to the level of the action rather than shot from above
•Remember if you are using a free account Flickr limits your monthly upload by file size, so you place more photos by reducing the size of your pictures

2) For our media campaign, Youth Service America needs photos that reflect the diversity of the service movement. Examples include:
•Elected officials engaged in service with youth
•Members of the media engaged in service with youth
•Community leaders engaged in service with youth
•Youth with disabilities engaged in service with non-disabled youth
•Older youth serving younger youth, or youth of different ages serving together

3) Remember to include a caption with each photo, identifying the main figures from left to right and describing the action, e.g. Ian G. and Julie M. fill backpacks with school supplies to donate to Bates Elementary School in Mississippi.

4) Respect the rights and feelings of others—get permission from everyone photographed (there are photo releases in the GYSD planning materials)!
