Photo Critiques

Here's an idea I had for the group and the blog.

Maybe I could offer photo critiques for a few photos each week, and post them to the blog. I am no expert in photography, but I've learned quite a bit over the last several years, and I think that I might be able to give some help to those wanting to improve their photography. I would give my opinion of what I think works in a photo, and what doesn't, and where possible, suggest ways to improve it. I'd try to be as thorough as possible, and depending on your perspective I may offer some harsh criticisms.

Is this something you think you would like to see? Even if you don't submit a photo to be critiqued, then you may learn something from what I say on others'. Of course, I'm only one man, with a particular opinion and tastes, so whenever I post a critique of a photo, I'd include a link to the photo comments so others can add their opinion to mine. Hopefully we'll get some dissenting opinions that will lead to interesting discussions.

I'd limit people to submitting one photo per week to be critiqued, and I'd probably only comment on 5 or so of them.

What do you think? Something that could work? Or asking for trouble ;)

Speaking for myself, I like critiques of my photos. Hell, I don't mind people telling me that my photos suck as long as they have sound reasons to back that up.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

This could work. Another suggestion would be to do something on Photophlow like the Photo Critiques group does. We could set up a specific time to meet online and we could all give our critiques live.

@bruincub Brian of Epic Edits did something similar, and it was fantastic while it lasted, but there were some problems:

- Attendance was unreliable. The last two times before Brian stopped doing it, he and I were the only two there.
- It's a bit cumbersome for critiques, as some people are slower than others, and they'd post their comment after we'd moved on to the next photo, and it would get confusing what people were referring to.
- Most importantly I think, only those in the room will get to see the critiques. I think they could be valuable enough that a large audience could benefit from them. I can't post photophlow discussions into my blog.

A photophlow room would be fun to do, but I don't think it's the best solution for this proposal.

I think it's a great idea. We all have specific things that we like or see, and dissenting opinions often makes us better at what we're doing.

As long as it doesn't turn mean, like some of the other critique groups have, then I think it can be a beneficial proposition for all of us.

Oh yes please! It would be great to have a regular critique section, one would be able to learn so much from others opinions and imput.

I do agree with Dawn though .. if it turned out mean and uncomfortable I would be the first one outta there. I value others opinions and am like a sponge at the moment .. wanting to learn and take it all in, but if there is any disrespect or it becomes toooo confrontational I don't feel I would want to learn that way. Everyone takes photos of the world around them as seen through their own eyes and sometimes others just don't get it.

All that said .. I think it would be a good learning tool. :)

It could work, but you never know who's going to take your criticisms to heart.. I'm interested in reading about them, and participating too. :)

It's a bit overdue, but I've posted the first photo critique post to my blog: neil.creek.name/blog/2008/07/23/photo-critiques-week-4/

I'd appreciate it if you could let me know if you think the post is appropriate. How is the tone of voice? Is it okay that I offered some suggested improvments to the processing? Did I say too much? Too little? Basically, can you critique my critiques ;)

Your feedback is very important, as this is very very early stages of what I would like to be a regular feature on the blog. How it develops depends on how you all like it!

Thanks :)

I just wanted to add that I read your post on critiques and I love it! It really helps me to see before and after shots and hear what others would do to a photo to improve it. I am very much a novice in Photoshop (and photography for that matter) so this is a tremendous help!!! Thank you!

Thanks for the comment IPS :) I'm actually considering writing some posts on basic photoshop editing of your photos, which would go well with these critique posts too I think!

I also read all of your critiques and find that it helps to see what fellow photographers would do differently if they had the chance. There were points that I also thought about while there were others that didn't occur to me.

I would love to hear the steps you took in PS to get to your version of the photo.
