I Love the Zoo! My favorite animal is the Tiger. On my last visit it was very cold and there were not many visitors. The Tiger put on a show for the few lucky spectators and came very close & looked right at us ...posing! You are lucky to see him at all in the warmer weather, he stays in the shade in the back of his habitat. This is the BEST portrait I have ever taken of this Beautful Animal!

I was at the Smithsonian National Zoo In DC, mostly to see the Pandas. But I ended up spending more time observing the Cheetahs. This one decided to strike a pose for me, and ended up being my favorite shot of the day.

Meerkat is an interesting animal. They lives in group and someone within the group will be the watcher looking after the safety of the group. This guy was extremely dedicated to his work, watching the sky for predators. I really like its eyes, you can tell that it's very serious about his job even they were in a zoo...
The Meerkat Lookout
The royal glare

Well "His Highness" never shows up ever when i visit the zoo. He is usually lazing high up on his hilltop away from our eyes. This time he was out in the open, probably feeling not so lazy. Clicked this with my S3IS...

Arctic Wolf

This is an Arctic Wolf taken in Omega Park, Canada. Those are beautiful animals and I thought that the "white on white" quality of the picture really brought out the mouth and nose, creating a dramatic effect.

Hi, this is an image I shot at the San Francisco Zoo. I was visiting the Zoo in January of 08 and after seeing most of the animals stumbled upon the Grizzly Bear exhibit and found the sisters in action. I am a firm believer in what I call "PhotoKarma" because you just can't make this kind of thing happen. Or otherwise known as "Right Place, Right Time".

A Venerable Aldabran Tortoise
Venerable Aldabran Tortoise
This gentle giant resides at Gatorland, Orlando. There are two of these large tortoises and one about half their size. The two large ones are about 600 lbs. each and are estimated to be between 80 and 100 years old. Not long ago an Aldabran Tortoise died overseas at the age of 255 yrs. old. The two big ones at Gatorland are named Jimmy and Dean. I don't know which is which. This one has an old facial injury which doesn't seem to cause it any difficulty with eating.

On a trip to Edinburgh Zoo last weekend this beauty was sleeping in the shade, that this shot shows him emerging from. He came out and just sized up those of us watching, and gave me the chance to get a shot that I am so chuffed with! I sharpened the image slightly but did nothing else to the image that you see here! A bit of a rarity for me!

You can't take away instinct, even in captivity. This owl was part of a falconry display, and in this shot is devouring a chick for his lunch.

I photograph lots of zoo animals & this is by far one of my absolute favorites. It made it to the semi-final round of the 2009 UK "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" contest. I'm very proud of this one.

The eyes tell it all. Shot at Veresegyhaz, Hungary. Central Europe's biggest bear sanctuary also gives home to a pack of wolves who have their own nearly 2 acres of forest land. They can decide whether to roam about near the visitors or be on there own deep in the woods. While I don't really like zoos (but regard their efforts in species protection and many other ways) this place I very much love to visit.

I hired a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 lens to get as close as possible, but went on a special gorilla day. I still had to crop to get this tight, but I am happy with this shot for the day.

The next time I went to a zoo, I had purchased a 200mm f/2.8. Here I used it with a Metz flash as a fill in HSS mode.

Those eyes

Portrait of a White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) shot at a tiny zoo on Margitsziget, Budapest. The zoo has a special program for birds of prey who for some reason got injured and aids their rehabilitation. This eagle has had some serious wing injury and probably will spend it's remaining time in zoos. But in his eyes, the fierce predator lives on.
