Have a look at the Canon Rebel XTi and the Nikon D80, both very good choices and both among the very best in the enrty level dSLR market :)

Check out the Olympus E-500, too. Available with two lenses for about the same price. I've had mine since Aug and have not been disappointed with the quality. If you get a chance, go to a store and handle the various cameras, the way a camera feels in your hand can make difference in your final decision. Also the layout of the controls may make a difference.

what is the British/Euopean name of the most popular camera used in this site, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT? The particular version doesn't seem to be available here.
