It's Time We Met

1. What's the purpose of this photo contest?

It's Time We Met is a free photography contest held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The goal is to find photography taken at the Museum—the Main Building and The Cloisters Museum and Gardens—by visitors that depict how you, the visitor, have shared your Museum experience with friends and family. The contest runs from February 15, 2009 through March 7, 2009. The Museum will then select the winning photograph, which will be used in the It's Time We Met marketing campaign.

2. How do I enter my photo in the contest?
a.  Join The Metropolitan Museum of Art Flickr Group if you are not already a group member.
b.  From February 15, 2009 through March 7, 2009 (mid-night, EST) add your photo to the pool and tag it "time_we_met." If you forget to tag your photo it will not be entered in the contest. The Museum is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, incomplete entries or technical errors.
c.  Upload the highest-resolution image as possible. The winning image may be used in various contexts and a hi-res image ensures the best quality.
d.  If you have any questions about how to join Flickr (it's free!) or tag your photos, see Flickr's FAQs page.
e. Be sure to read the contest rules below.
3. What are the rules that I need to follow?
a.  There is a limit of five photos from each person.
b.  Photos that you submit must be your own work and you must own the rights to distribute the image.
c.  Photos must be offered under a Creative Commons Attribution License. See www.flickr.com/creativecommons/ for more information on Creative Commons licenses.
d.  Photos must comply with The Metropolitan Museum of Art's photography policy. The big one here is that photography is not allowed of modern and contemporary works of art, in special exhibitions, or other areas designated "No Photography." Please be sure to read the entire policy so you understand what's allowed and not allowed in the Museum.
e.  You must have the consent of those whose faces are visible in the image. If your photo is selected you will be required to provide a release form for each individual in your photograph.
f.  By adding your photo to the Museum's Flickr Group Pool and tagging it “time_we_met” you authorize The Metropolitan Museum of Art to
i.  use all entered photographs for any Museum use, (including but not limited to educational, archival, advertising, marketing, promotional purposes, and in publications of the Museum including books, posters, film, internet use, and merchandise), in any media in perpetuity.
ii.  crop or manipulate your photograph
iii.  use your name as the creator of the entry
g.  You maintain all other rights to your image.
h.  Employees and volunteers of the Museum and their immediate families and household members are not eligible to win.
i.  By participating in the contest you agree to the terms of these rules.
4. How will the winner be chosen?
a.  The winner will be chosen by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and announced on the Museum's Flickr Group page and on the Museum's website through May 2009. All decisions are final.
b.  Two runners-up will be chosen by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and announced on the Museum's Flickr Group page. All decisions are final.
c.  The Museum retains the sole discretion over the selection of, and decision not to select, any particular entry as the winner.
5. What happens if I win?
a.  If your photo is chosen you will be contacted by April 1, 2009 by The Metropolitan Museum of Art through your Flickr.com email account. You will be required to respond by email to the Museum within seven days or an alternate winner will be selected.
b.  The Museum will send you a photography release form and affidavit of eligibility to be signed by you, or if you are under 18 then signed by your parent or guardian. You will be required to fax or mail the release form to the Museum within seven days or an alternate winner will be selected.
c.  Winner will receive $250 cash plus a one-year Met Net membership—a $60 value.
d.  Two runners-up will each receive a $100 Met Store gift card, redeemable at any time in all Metropolitan Museum of Art retail locations.
e.  Any taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner. No substitutions or exchanges of prizes can be made. Odds of winning depend on the total number of entries.

Wow good~~

What are the criteria used in the approval process? (Not complaining, just curious.)

On a related topic, the contest rules say that photographs of modern and contemporary works of art are not allowed, though I see a fair number in the posted images. Why the discrepancy?

@r.wayneparsons

Good questions.

Modern and contemporary works are tricky since many of them have different copyright licenses than older pieces. While the rules above say that photos of modern and contemporary works are not allowed, the museum's photography policy does not state this. I've been approving photos of modern and contemporary works because the photo are technically allowed in the pool and I believe that it's possible for some to win. Here's an ad that is running now that shows that clearly not all modern and contemporary art is off limits in this contest.

As for the approval process, it's just me going through the queue and making sure all the photos are of or related to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and aren't of seagulls on a beach. Also, I'm doing as best I can to make sure none of the pictures are of special exhibitions as photography is not allowed in these area.

Is there a way to check if I tagged my photo correctly?? And, of facebook, should the photo be tagged as Metropolitan_Museum -- it doesn't show as blue -- plus I had no email to submit with the tag.
hills, PRO 6 years ago
@tanfoster:

It looks like your photo hasn't been added submitted to the group yet. Once you've submitted it and it's been approved by a Moderator it will appear in the group pool. Be sure to tag it

time_we_met

in order for it to be entered in the contest. It needs to be both in the group pool and tagged to be entered in the contest.

The images on our Facebook page are pulled in randomly from the group pool.

Does that answer all your questions?

Contest Closed

"It's Time We Met," our first visitor-contributed photo contest, was a huge success! The Museum's judges are in the process of selecting the winning photograph, which will be used in the "It's Time We Met" marketing campaign. The contest may be over, but we're still interested in your photos of the Museum. Add more photos or see what other people have submitted.

Be sure to keep your photo in the pool and tagged time_we_met. We've starred each photo entered in the contest a favorite but will still want to see that it's properly tagged.

I took my photos over a year ago but just found out about this contest today. Bad timing! Is there any way they could be considered??
hills, PRO 6 years ago
Unfortunately, it's too late to enter the photos in the contest but please keep sending them to the group for everyone to see.

Thanks everyone for your participation! Great photos all around.

On February 15, we launched "It's Time We Met," our first visitor-contributed photography contest. Hundreds of visitors submitted nearly one thousand photographs taken in the Museum's Main Building or at The Cloisters Museum and Gardens depicting how they've shared their Met experience with friends and family.

Out of the 999 submissions, the Museum's panel of judges selected two winning photographs and five runners-up. Prizes were awarded to the winners, whose photographs will be used in the "It's Time We Met" marketing campaign. See the selected photos here.
