Pilots and service crews, gather around! We at Mechahub are pleased to announce an exciting new contest. The theme for this contest is Civilian Mecha. The only real restrictions are that the mecha possess no weaponry (i.e. not for military application) and the limits of your imagination. There are no technology time frame restraints either so it can range anywhere from Steampunk to Futuristic.

There are several examples of unarmed mecha in popular science fiction and anime like the exo-loader in the movie Aliens, construction patlabors in Patlabor, and the logger mechs in Battletech. Some ideas to explore are salvage and retrieval, warehouse/dock and spacedock workers, EMS/first responders, communications, sports, and entertainment, tugs, product vendors, etc.
4 Categories are the following:

Land
Sea
Air
Space

The 3 sizes per category are:

Minifig scale with pilot, unmanned minifig scale (i.e. drone), and microscale.

You may enter only one moc per category so please do not rush to post. Please only enter new creations. If you have made a civilian mecha that predates this contest, and has not been posted before then it can be accepted. Placing the mecha in a diorama to showcase its ability would greatly enhance its presentation but is not required.

Submit entries to the Mechahub Civilian Mecha Contest thread on Flickr, with one picture link of the moc, directing to your gallery. The contest will run March 16th to May 25th. An FAQ thread will be added to complement the entry thread on Flickr. A secret council of shadowy personnel will declare winners for each size and category.

Steve Witt and the Lego Group have generously provided fantabulous prizes.

Now go forth to your fabrication units and churn baby churn!

P.S.

The Mechahub site is currently down due to hosting issues. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to rectify things soon.

We also reserve the right to modify the rules at any time if it suits the best interests of the contest.

NEWSFLASH! Contest extended to 6/6/09!

Sweet! Great idea for a contest.

Hmm...

*Runs off to Lego room to start entries*

EDIT: Do you have to be a member of the MechaHub website to enter the contest?

No membership in Mechahub is required. This contest is meant to encourage all builders to proliferate the creation of mecha mocs. Only then can the great evil be forced back into the darkness.

What if it had mining equipment? IE, a cannon to blast away rocks, that kind of thing.

What about Technic scale mecha?

Slice151 Posted 9 years ago. Edited by Slice151 (admin) 9 years ago
A mining laser would need to be understated and not detract from the overall design. You better make it look like a mining mecha and not just a mecha with a laser.

You can use technic but if you want it piloted, it needs to be a minifig.

Guys, please use the other thread for questions.

This workhorse utility mech is designed as both a heavy loader and a general utility mech. It's right at home in cargo bays loading and offloading containers while it's nimble enough to handle the most delicate work at a construction site. It's arms rotate and convert into fork lifts. I present the "Ecclesiastic Negotiator", number one instrument of the Spanish Inquisition. Running off of an early steam engine, this conglomeration of wood, stone, and metal main objection is to 'Search and convert'. Uses a safe, non-violent 'instrument of faith' attached to the left arm, for negotiating and downing pesky walls.

As a patrol mecha, Okka Jax monitors and collects samples of waters near the coastline, reporting routinely to the SPARKED Environmental Agency of the pollution in the waters. Needless to say, if these samples are contaminated, all near factories will have all their employees arrested, and the company of which they are part of will be eliminated by a rather violent force of security mech. When the world finally realized that the Improbability Drive would not be commercially produced (unless, of course, Eoin Colfer hijacks what ought to happen), it was decided that new measures would have to be taken. Considering that ignorant and defiant Spacers were often found floating through space, and that most Hitchhikers would repay you if you saved them from death when cast of a Vogon ship, SPARKED Industries deemed Space Jumpers necessary for their commercial ships. Within an airlock separate from the main hangar, these quick response mecha could easily swoosh out and grab a drifting astronaut, or repair the ship in the case that all other astromech droids were absent.

Mining a Subterranean Causeway by Sir Nadroj

The Geo-Bot 8.9 mines in an underground cavern, which resembles Giant's Causeway. Equipped with heavy armor and drill feet, the Geo-Bot 8.9 can grind up an obtrustive rock formation in its path. Also, it finds companionship in a canary - the mecha's programmers are unsure of the cause of its affection for the avian creature, as robots do not feel. Leading researchers call this phenomenon "heartbyte". Apparently the glitch bites the "heart" - that is, the central memory chip of the metal man. However, the glitch does not affect the mecha's occupation - mining - so he has yet to be thrown into the trash compactor.

Here is my entry, "The Rota Immediate Response Unit (IRU)".
Category: Land
Size: Unmanned, Minifig scale

Set Gallery

Description
"With the development of technologically advanced cities, high-speed roadways have become more widespread and due to the speeds at which cars are traveling on these roads, crashes are more life-threatening than before. Despite the new Air Plato ™ air bag technology, occupants of a crashed vehicle are still in danger and their immobilized vehicles jeopardize the safety of other motorists. In response to this the National Roadway Association (NRA) commissioned Porro Industries® to engineer a solution to this problem. The “Immediate Response Unit (IRU)” model Rota™ mech, is our answer. Armed with a next-generation spreader-cutter claw, these robots can be quickly deployed to the scene of any accident to free trapped civilians from vehicles. In situations where accidents are far-reaching, these units can attach a motorized highway-wheel, allowing them to reach destinations sooner.
The Rota is another example of the ways that Porro Industries ® is making advancements in technology to help the world."

opallix 9 years ago
How? I have viable reasons; some who missed the original deadline got an extension, while others worked to get theirs in in time, so I don't see why those whom have already entered can't be able to make more MOCs like the people who are entering after. There is a reason some people scope out the quality of the competition and enter at the last moment; now that cannot be done for those people.

^Just my argument. No means no, and I'll readily accept such a response.

One can post up to twelve entries. Read closely. Extending the contest was not a decision that was taken lightly. The pros and cons were weighed and in the end, you can't satisfy everyone. It was felt that the community would benefit with an extension. And no one wants the community to lose out, right? Also it was stated originally that we reserved the rights to modify the rules.
Solus Maximus 9 years ago
We had two months to build something.....Just vote and be out with it already....
tobyhein Posted 9 years ago. Edited by tobyhein (member) 9 years ago
I don't think unlimited entries is a good idea. Sorry. People would just go crazy with it. As is, I'll probably flesh out one of those categories with my last entry since the date's been pushed back.
Also, I agree with Solus here-- we were all expecting it to be over, so let's have it over OR be thankful that we get more time. putting more demands on the judges would just tick them off (or at least, it'd tick me off)
Memory ☓ 9 years ago
Thanks for the extension- I have one build almost finished, and hopefully at least three more coming down the pipes.
Retro_bot 9 years ago
^^Obviously, it doesn't tick off Fradel too much, and he IS one of the judges. The judges agreed on the decision, and as to you expecting to be over... well, as Fradel stated it was said in the beginning that they reserved the right to modify the rules. I too am eager to see the results, but I think we can all wait.
