Group Description

Welcome to the Marine Debris Art Challenge! To Participate, JOIN the “Marine Debris Art Challenge” Group

POST a photo of your creation to the Group from September 21 – October 11, 2013. Make sure you list your country, specify the area where you conducted your cleanup and include a TAG for the category (see below).

TAG your best photo of your artwork with one of the following categories (you may submit one photo per category) and upload it to the group page:

“PLASTICS” –

“FOOD PACKAGING” –

“LOST OR ABANDONED FISHING GEAR” –

“OTHER DEBRIS” –

“VOTE” on your favorite in each group – Plastics, Food Packaging, Lost or Abandoned Fishing Gear, and Other Debris – by marking as a favorite; what you think are the best pieces of artwork in each category. Invite your friends and family to vote as well! Voting closes on October 11, 2013.

“LIKE” and “FOLLOW” our pages (www.facebook.com/StateDepartment.OES and twitter.com/StateDeptOES) and look for updates, marine debris tips and trivia, and suggestions for getting more involved in marine conservation.

CELEBRATE! The top pieces of artwork in each group will be announced on October 24, 2013, and featured with your name, country, and the location of the art on the U.S. State Department website and social media sites.

To qualify to be featured, your art project must be original, and your submission must include your country and the location of your cleanup activity. The artists with top favorites will be contacted after October 11 and must respond by October 22 with their name so credit can be given.

You retain the copyright to any photo submitted, but the U.S. Department of State reserves the right to use any picture for non-commercial and promotional purposes. You agree to these terms when you submit a photo. Regular Flickr and Facebook Terms of Service apply.

Upload only one photo per category, maximum of 4 photos. Please see the group description for submission guidelines.

Note: Some materials should not be used in the art projects. Do not re-purpose pieces of glass, cigarette butts, or medical waste, or anything that is harmful or unsafe to handle.

If you would like to participate in the contest, but do not have a Flickr account, please email a photo of your art project – along with your country, the area where you conducted your cleanup , and the relevant debris category – to marinedebrisart@state.gov.
