What do you think?

I watched the video and they really look like fun. They could be a good example for a teacher to use to explain magnetism or magnetic poles. Also they would just be fun to mess around wiith

I watched the video, but I must have missed something - what do you do with them?
waynehjr1 Posted 5 years ago. Edited by waynehjr1 (member) 5 years ago
They can be used just like these regular ones do, except a lot larger..lol. They are also a lot stronger than their Megadots, they seem to actually have the same equivalent bond ratio as these regular magnets do, if not stronger.

They showed the strength of attraction about 1 foot away so definitely a strong bond for building.

They have a hefty price tag $40.00 each (set of 2), so most likely won't be able to quickly gain hundreds or thousands of them, but imagine if you could..xD.

They do seem fun even with a few of them though.

I also don't think there'd be any worry about kids or anyone swallowing them so the CSPC will be bummed as they won't have anything to complain about..lol.

WAY COOL !!!! ... are you going to have a 50% off sale on Black Friday or Cyber Monday????? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more ...
waynehjr1 Posted 5 years ago. Edited by waynehjr1 (member) 5 years ago
I just couldn't resist and ordered 2 sets to start me off. Wonder what crazy things I can do in combo with Nanodots/Zen and other magnets..lol. Guess we'll find out soon..xD :-) I'm thinking possibly some anti-gravity scenes (if strong enough) watch out Mickey, Donald & the M&M twins...lol

Now watch them have a 50% Black Friday sale o.O I'll blame tend2it..lol <.<

Not to crush anyone's dreams, but there won't be any Black Friday sale for GYRO this year since supply is so short. We were lucky to have a few units come off the line early for early adopters.

That said, I do want to mention that the new GYRO lineup (this is just the first of a series of other cool models) is the focus of the developer program, and approved developers get special... uh, benefits ("Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more") on GYROs and other Nano items.

They're for fun and experimentation.

Recall when neodymium spheres first came out, everyone was asking the same thing! It wasn't until Janos Szakasci (szakiii) posted his build discoveries that the hype started.

Consider it an enabler for new ideas.

I admit that despite my comment, I am intrigued and I want some, but they seem so expensive. It looked like US$50 for two, including postage, and I'd want a few! I will order one set, I think. You do get two, right? :-)
Edit:I ordered some, I'm sure I'll think of something to do with them (stay posted)

Haha ... I figured you were in 1st phase production ... but I thought I would ask before I buy some ... haha ...

Humm ... the developer program sounds like fun ... what does that involve? ... I would love you to generate something that rides the magnetic stability field to perpetuate one of your gyro designs on my Levitron levitation platform. Perhaps with a different floating platform (ring base to match the stationary ring base?) suspending a spinning gyro sphere in the center ... now that would be COOL! Replace the existing suspended platform with something that moves by feeding on pulses magnetically projected from the base. I would gladly beta test that for you.

The Levitron Perpetuator (seen below the fixed magnet platform) pings the metal balancing washers on the spinning tops ... and keeps them at a constant RPM to stay stable in the magnetic sweet spot and keeps the top floating for hours ... this concept could provide something automated and similar to the stationary demo of a single sphere magnet affecting the gyro from a distance in the video.

Great Idea! Whether it will float on the base or not will depend if the a standard dipole magnet array will suffice in achieving the correct balance in conjunction with the magnet array within the base. Curious to know!

The developer program comes in two varieties:

First, is for gaining access to magnets for educational or academic uses, in a project or for teaching.

The second variety is for testing prototype ideas that we come up with, or if you'd like to prototype ideas of your own. We do all our manufacturing, design and engineering in-house and even produce some pretty wild forms of magnets for other companies.

Both streams get access to Nano products at special rates, but of course you have to qualify first.

Yes interesting idea! Mine was a little different and uses 4 of these Gyros positioned into a square spaced 12 " apart diagonally. Start with a small hollow sphere made of 5mm magnet spheres. Reason being with only 1 it won't be possible to have all 4 either attract or repel because of the single n/s polarity option with only one magnet, but an assembly of many may work to enable either all attracting or all repelling.

The key is to slowly lower the assembled sphere down into the center of these gyros and watch as they turn and direct themselves toward the sphere when it comes it range. Hope fully all 4 will follow suit and either attract or repel. If they all attract will it actually distort the sphere as all 4 forces pull against it? Or if they all repel will it start to crush the sphere?

Either way it should maintain a sort of anti-gravity for the sphere to hover centered between all 4 gyros. Of course this could all go wrong and not work at all..:-), but that's the fun of experimentation..xD.

But if it does work then other shapes and creations can be tried. That's where my above statement of watch out Mickey, Donald and The M&M twins come in :-).

If everything goes as planned (which usually never happens..lol), I could lower a small creation of one of these characters by a single line of 5mm magnets (or a thin narrow rod for better stability) down into the center and watch them either be pulled apart or implode into itself..xD or will it simply be able to hover there unscaved. Of course with a video camera capturing the whole event.

This is assuming it works and that this is a perfect world...xD

Eventually this could lead to the use of 8, and even 12 etc. gyros positioned into a circular pattern. Could even have expansion packs with a center rod (of stainless or aluminum), as a guide for ringed magnets to travel up & down vertically, by controlling the gyros to always repel ( with add-ons to the opposite polarity to maintain the repelling effect), causing a constant bouncing motion. :-) Other objects can be made to be molded around the ringed magnets for added options and display effect!! Perhaps a fireman or pole dancer..lol

so when will they come? (The ones I ordered)
waynehjr1 Posted 5 years ago. Edited by waynehjr1 (member) 5 years ago
Just curious if the shipping dates on the 1st run has changed or on schedule. It states on the site for the Gyro section
~Orders placed before December 1st will ship to arrive in time for the holidays.~
I only ask because it already the 12th of December leaving only13 days before X-Mas and my order is still on the processing stage & has order date of 11/8/2013 (well before the December 1st deadline).
Also the site still states taking only pre-orders.
Just curious if I should still expect this to be delivered before the holidays or not.. :-)

They should be at your doorstep soon ... I got mine last week.
Really COOL ... and the synchronized attraction field is very sensitive and strong ... just like in the video.

tend2it:

Oh nice...I just got a tracking number, but it hasn't been received by the shipper yet, just an electronic info received...lol.

Strange how you already got yours , last week even when I was the first one in this discussion to have placed an order..lol ( the same day it was posted..xD ) Perhaps because I placed a 2nd order after that slowed down my processing..lol

Anyways the description is confusing, it states
Nanodots GYRO Duo - Single (quantity 4)

Do they come (2) per order or are they only one(single)? I ordered (2) originally & added (2) more for a total of (4) sets (so I thought), but the word 'Single' is confusing?

Should I be receiving (4) or (8) Gyro's for my order of 4..lol?

I guess I'm trying to figure out if they've sent out both orders or just my 1st order..lol. It only has the 1st order number attached to it, but if they sent out 4 sets then I should be getting both or if they sent out only (4) Gyros & they come in sets of 2 then I should be simply getting my 1st order..lol :-) or perhaps it's only 1 per order and they sent out (4) single Gyros (containing both my orders)...argghh..lol :-) It's that darn 'single' attached to the description..xD Well I'll find out soon enough. :-)

waynehjr1:

Yeah ... I was confused too when I was ordering my sets ... what I read was dual = 2 which was correct ... they include 2 gyros and 2 magnetic proxies ... so 4 total spheres ... the proxies are in the gray hollow spheres ... to prevent swallowing ... haha ... but the problem is that the video had the proxy magnet handheld ... which provides much more control than free rolling inside the hollow sphere. I have to try it out with a MegaDot and see if I can get the same effect as in the video between the fingertips. So ,,, you will need 4 sets to make an all gyro 2x2x2 cube.

BTW, this photo made it onto Flickr explore today !!! ... free advertising for NanoDots ... and their new Gyro ... :oD ... 850+ views so far !

tend2it:

Nice! about your photo that is :-) I agree about Duo meaning 2, which is why I ended up making a 2nd order for 2 so I would end up with 8 total..lol. It was the shipping invoice I just got with the tracking number that was confusing

Nanodots GYRO Duo - Single (quantity 4)

This looks like 4 items, but the word 'single' implies only 1..lol I guess I think it would have made just as much sense to only have

Nanodots GYRO Duo - (quantity 4)

unless the word 'single is meant for something about the quantity..lol

Oh, no use worrying about now, I guess it won't be shipped out until after the holiday, as it still shows only an electronic info received on the tracking number.
I'll find out when I get it..lol :-)

waynehjr1:

Nanodots GYRO Duo really means only 2 GYROS ... the 2 proxies are not GYROS and shouldn't be counted.

Opps ... I hit edit on you post instead of reply (restored it)
waynehjr1 Posted 5 years ago. Edited by waynehjr1 (member) 5 years ago
tend2it:

Yup..you're right...I was just wondering the way the invoice was worded whether or not they sent me both orders or just my 1st order of 2 which should be 4 Gyros. When they added 'single' to it..lol.

But they did send me both orders & guess the tracking update was off because I just received them Today!!..xD :-)

Did a few experiments with the Levitron

Initial experiment was to see how the magnetic field in the base affected the Gyro ... thought that the field actually changes around the base ... it doesn't really, only to auto-correct the center platform if it moves out of position. The idea of suspending the gyro above the magnetic platform therefore would not work since it will be attracted to the base platform and the base field does not rotate.

Summary, the base seems to only work with a north pole oriented upside down. The base keeps it in the stable levitation field. When moving the gyro around the base, the north pole points towards the base when within ~1 inch field distance. Outside of that distance, north points up like normal.

Some shots I didn't have to post before ... the Levitron Revolution pivoted 90 degrees on its side with the Gyro holding position it the magnetic sweet spot ... yes Wayne, it was able to hold it ... but notice the magnet is slightly tilted to compensate for the weight of the ball.

============
Experiment #2:

Tested gyro over the Levatron Perpetuator www.amazon.com/Fascinations-LEVD-Levitron-Perpetuator/dp/... and the ping created a noticeable vibration on the gyro but was not enough to create any sort of rotation like the top (note that top was already spinning at the appropriate RPM ... for physics detail look here
aias.us/documents/miscellaneous/Levitron.pdf whereas the gyro is stationary). Another observation is that the field is parallel /N pointing the the right rather than perpendicular N pointing up to the base. This test was without the Levitron magnetic base on the Perpetuator. When the magnetic base was placed on top of the perpetuator, the magnetic field went back to perpendicular N point up and the ping was less noticeable at the new height above the base.
