There was a time, probably before I was born, when America was the world’s leading auto manufacturer. Sure American cars are chock full of flair and aggression but when it comes to comfort, style, luxury, performance, reliability, and masterful engineering, you just can’t beat German automakers. I could walk out of my Seattle apartment now, in the northwest corner of the US, and survey the cars parked on the street and I would be certain to find a few Fords and Chevys for sure...but outnumbering them would be an array of German brands...and perhaps outnumbering them would be Japanese cars but we’ve done that challenge already. German automobiles hold a fond place in the hearts and minds of consumers as well as many of us LUGNuts. We all seem to love to build German vehicles already so why not give you exactly what you want?

Welcome to Autos aus Deutschland...the only build challenge all about German cars, trucks and bikes! So what are our options here? You can’t go wrong with the vast selections and illustrious history from our well known German manufacturers such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Porsche, and outside the US there is Opel. Some of our most iconic vehicles on the road are of German descent, including the classic and new VW Beetle, the new (but not old) Mini Cooper and even the humorously teeny-weeny Smart Car. If you have a need for breakneck speed, many fine German automobiles have made it into several forms of racing including Formula One, LeMans, Dakar, Baja, and rally sport racing.

And just because you’re building German cars, it doesn’t mean you can’t customize or hot rod the hell out of them if that’s what you’d like to do. (Volksrods, anyone?) Japanese and German imports are the modern hot rods so if you have it in your heart to totally trick out a 1995 BMW M3 with gold spinner rims, swivel seats, Lambo doors, and an in-dash popcorn maker, then by God that’s what you ought to do, young man!

The big names are all fine and good, but you’d be remiss not to discover for yourselves some of the lesser known treasures such as Trabant, Weismann, Amphicar, Maybach, Gumpert and...YES! I didn’t lose track of thought there, nor was I citing the name of a 70’s era progressive rock band.YES! a small German sports car manufacturer. Go ahead, look it up.

While you’re doing that, today is April 1st, you have until May month to complete your German inspired cars, trucks, or bikes. As always build one or build many in any scale, color scheme or car culture you desire. Short write ups and photo entries go in this thread while questions, comments, praise, gripes, and other chatter goes in the accompanying discussion thread. Good luck and happy building, everyone! popcorn maker! That’s pretty funny. I dare someone to build that.

I wasn't satisfied to merely build a car made in Germany, it also had to be a car that you'll only find in Germany, so here is my Polizei BMW.

At the even laster minuter, my four entries for the challenge, starting with an Audi Quattro in rally livery -

I could do better, same for the one below, but I didn't have time :(

yikes, three yellow entries in a row :P

and for my next stunt, ladies and gentlemen, I'll be needing my also mostly badly-built unspecified-year Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9....

Next up is an also unspecified-year NSU Ro80. I chose something a little more less known for this one, I didn't want to make only mainstream cars, even though it's not totally obscure - they made about 80,000 of 'em - it's the only German car powered by a rotary.

....and I saved the best of mine for last, as I always do. It's a BMW 2002 Turbo, and guess what, I'm not specifying a specific year (that's an odd sentence). Surprise!

credit to the grille goes to somebody, but I can't remember his name. :P
