Lino M PRO 12:01am, 1 November 2009
Its been said by folks who are not me that I am the world’s leading builder of classic American customs and hot rods in Lego. I approach the brick as an artist first and foremost...and what I lack in mechanical ability I more than make up for it in one-of-a-kind grace and style. To describe my work would probably entail a high sense of nostalgia and a little bit of badass attitude thrown in for good measure. Nathan Proudlove is the self proclaimed “jack of all trades, master of none”. There’s plenty of truth in the first part of that idea as its common for him to enter something in six different categories and win a trophy for nearly all of them. He’s possibly the only guy on the planet who can go head to head with me on a buddy challenge. His influences are strange and varied, whether he’s building a minifig scale Decotora truck or a Miniland Scooby Doo Mystery Machine. Always exciting but never predictable, Nathan will always find ways to impress us...and simultaneously throw us for a loop. If its exotic super cars you’re into, Firas Abu-Jaber is the guy to turn to. More like a magician than a builder, Firas has a world of talent and an unwavering sense of style, whether he’s building a sleek new Ferrari or a sporty Evo X. Anything with his famous “Cars Paradise” moniker will surely astound even the most jaded of builders. In an increasingly studless Lego world, Ralph “Mad Physicist” Savelsberg unabashedly lets those studs show with phenomenal results. With some of the most advanced build techniques around, Ralph pulls off accurate details in his tricky eleven wide automotive models that the rest of us can only scratch our heads over. Frivolous and wasteful showrods don’t make much sense in Ralph’s even keeled world, but his sense of clean practicality and efficient design shows through in anything he builds...all with much admiration from his peers. If you want to be like Tim “Rabidnovaracer” Inman, you had better be ready to use your entire lego collection. Whether he’s built a 42 stud wide hummer or a stretch limo that goes on for miles, Tim breaks size records (and probably a few shock absorbers) with his massive creations. A diehard Chevy guy with a real hot rod of his own, Tim approaches the brick with a mechanical knowledge most of us can only dream of. If you want the most mind blowing Lego built trucks on Earth, I’d turn to bricksonwheels. Peter “lego911” Blackert breaks records as the most prolific Lego car builder ever and no matter what you think about it...you have to admit that Raphy is the king of Tiny Turbos. We all have interesting styles and different approaches to automotive building. Its all of our dedication to our craft and our differences that makes LUGNuts such a great group to be a part of. This is why this challenge is all about honoring our peers!

This month we are to choose any other LUGNut and sort of...be more like them somehow. There are several ways to go about doing this. While imitation is the best form of flattery, copying someone else’s MOC directly would probably not be the best way to go. But think more in terms of...what sort of car would Ralph like? Or how can I pull off something totally unpredictable like Nathan would do? If Firas, for example, is the LUGNut you want to honor but don’t have the pieces or the know-how to pull off one of his sleek super cars, that’s quite alright. You may build something he’d like in a much smaller scale, if that suits you. You can even combine your own style with visual cues and aesthetics from another builder to create a never before seen hybrid of ideas. I’m sure if you contact your chosen LUGNut via flickr mail, they’d be happy to help you out in answering any questions or ideas you may have. Emailing “Can you show me step-by-step how you would build a grille of an ’86 Buick in your super SNOT technique?”...would probably not be the best way to go about this...remember, we’d rather be honored, not burdened. But instead “what influences you when you build?” and “what’s your fave auto makers?” would certainly be a better way to go. Plus if you’re good at asking the right questions, you’d end up learning a lot about what makes your fave LUGNuts tick. Work to the best of your ability but you shouldn’t feel ashamed if you can’t pull off a Dodge Charger exactly the way Dylan Denton can. I’m sure he’d be thrilled nonetheless if you spoke highly of him in your write up of your Dylan inspired creation. Oh, that reminds me, most importantly, make sure you name the LUGNut you are honoring in your write up. As we all have busy lives outside of this group, If you learn that someone is honoring you, you shouldn’t feel obligated to build a MOC in return. Unless you’re Peter, most of us can’t pull off multiple entries. Also, I didn’t exactly ask everyone’s permission before launching this challenge, so if you find that a particular LUGNut doesn’t want to be honored by you or anyone else, lets be respectful of their wishes and move on to another peer. As always, build in any scale you desire...build one entry or build many. This thread is for photo entries and short write ups only...chatter, praise, questions, ideas and other banter can go in the accompanying discussion thread. Today is November 1st, you have until December 1st, one month to show your fellow LUGNuts some love, so lets show the world what we can do! As always, happy building, everyone.

Yeah, yeah I know. I said that I wouldn't be able to participate in the challenge, but when inspiration strikes sometime you just have to go with the flow. I decided to imitate Ralph Savelsberg and his minifig scale vehicles. I give you:

LEGO Lamborghini Gallardo racing edition dbz (6)
I didn't make this for the build challenge but i think is good opportunity to dedicate it to FIRAS not because it looks like his Gallardo but because with his work showed me that not only the bricks make a great lego creation but also their shadow and the contrast between two or more of them.I think that this creation of mine is a good example of this knowledge.thanks Firas, you paved the good way man...(even if i still think and i told you so ,that you have to be more patient in order to make greater creations)

I wanna be like........ Nolnet

If you haven't checked out his photo stream, you should. Nolnet also has a few automotive works there. of my favourites would have to be his 'Go Miniman and say YEAH!' Party truck.

For which I have built this Miniland scale tractor in recognition that you can't party everyday.

Fresh on the heels of Lino honouring me, I present my entry honouring Lino. I started building this car before I saw Lino's car, but I'm happy to note that I did everything to it that he didn't do to his: it's slammed, chopped and has a completely outrageous paint job. Here's to you, Lino!

Crikey! Imitating my style seems to be extremely popular!
Mi final entry is not so much a new car as it is a collection of cars. Two of them were part of this challenge already and the others aren't built in anybody else's style. I've had a fruitful month of building cars, however, and feel that the collection of cars I built this month can honour the work of the indefatigable Lego 911.

Just letting you guys know I'm finally getting to writing the round up. The whole calendar debacle set me back several days this month, then anticipating a very busy couple of weeks coming up with the holidays, I submersed myself in the Galaxie build challenge early on. Now with both either finished or ironing themselves out, I am free to write the round up. So just hang tight guys, its super late but its coming.
