A local restaurant has decided to run a special on chocolate on their menu for the next month. They need something that says, no - SCREAMS Chocolate!!! People or still life or cute little furry animals or fish... ... well... probably not fish... but you get the idea.
Chocolate... and they are featuring chocolate candies, pie, cake, ice cream, and specialties. Chocolate.
It's that simple... and that hard.
Oh, and the finished art work is a square... that is predetermined by their menu, so no options there. Final image is to be a SQUARE.
There may be type on it, but that is not an issue now... just make the shot so freekin' chocolaty that we feel a need to brush after looking at it.
Critique is at the Project 52 org site - assignment 6.

You're a good man John. Taking one for the team. Although in her state, will there be anything left after your set-up?
My sister-in-law says the easiest way to improve chocolate is to put the word "more" in front of it.

Man, you had to pick chocolate! My wife is already putting together a list of chocolate things that I will photograph. I have the sneaking suspicion that she will be "disposing" of the chocolate when I am done shooting it :-)

For those of you who mistakenly buy too many chocolate candies, truffles, sweets, almond bars, white chocolate fudge and brownies - I want you to know I am at your assistance to help... uh... dispose - yeah... of the items.
Send for my address... I will take all off your hands...
Heh.
Hmmm... wonder if this would work if we shot Canon Lenses.... hmmm

Ummmmmm. I hate to say this. But Isnt this the place to be putting the 52 assignments. Not just tossing in Photos. I mean I for one am taking the "class" seriously. I would hope others are as well. the first thing to remember about assignments Especially If it was coming from an AD is Follow the specifications. I see a few here that are NOT. I ask we please keep on track for Dons sake and the hard work I am sure this is for him to put together.
this assignment calls for a SQUARE format.

That is one of the things that we want to be able to impress upon our clients... the ability to follow the shot list, and the layout, and the parameters that have been worked out so far in advance before the job comes to us.

This was way harder than I expected..... You look at all the pictures in cookbooks & conclude that as long as the food was created properly, then a photo should be simple..... NFW!
Much harder to compose than I thought it would be, plus I really really wish I had be more careful keeping things clean etc. I had some shots I preferred except that there was a chocolate fingerprint or the glass or similar - and it would have been just too hard to correct in photoshop without unreasonable effort

Here''s my first attempt (updated below)

Took the girls for ice cream and stopped by the grocery store for a few items. Chocolate cake, frosting, Bakers chocolate, Hershey Syrup.
I frosted the cake, partly melted the bars to shove into the sides, poured more syrup, dressed the plate, scoured the pantry for Cocoa powder and it is MIA, so I used cinnamon powder on top of the icing.
Shot with video lamp as main, and a thin white cutting sheet as a bounce cards to behind left. Setup shot follows.
hour+ total to setup, shoot, clean and process in Lightroom
and set-up

My wife came out later and said - I thought you were shooting a cake?! (as I quickly licked the last of the frosting off my fingers)
UPDATE
this morning I wanted to add a few elements so I re-shot.
added Pecan nuts like cocoa beans, choco chips, and a mug of hot cocoa.
I like this second setup better, though

This was a fun assignment. I am wanting to learn more about shooting food so it was fun for me. For this setup, I used two speedlites and I did a double exposure. I shot each individually first to get the best exposure then i shot the cakes and then the wine at a higher shutter speed. My VAL worked for really cheap when she saw what I was shooting lol.
Idea: about a day
Plan: 4 hours
shoot: 2 hours
Process: 1 hour
Cost: ~ 20 bucks

Here are a couple of different themes with chocolate. The cake progresses from just the cake, to cake and ring, to cake, ring and hand. They are 2 or 3 shots each stacked to get good highlights, etc.

The strawberries are three frames each. The strawberry is one, the candies and strawberries on the table are another and the splash is a third. All shot with the same setup and lighting. It's easier to do the splashes separate and clean the spatters off the table without everything else in the way. The chocolate syrup also had to be thinned 50% with water to get it to splash when the drops hit. The syrup on the strawberry was not thinned out so it would cover the strawberry nicely.

I'm not entirely happy with this one. Only in post I realized that depth of field at f/8, at this distance, is nowhere near enough. I was thinking of reshooting, but my daughter had already disposed of the subject ;)
Back-lit with an SB-900 through an umbrella at about 45° above the subject. Fill provided by two cardboard panels in front.

I had a lot of fun with this project, as I've been wanting to shoot more food. I tried several different angles and backgrounds and settled on this one.
I sure learned a lot. Food photography is extremely difficult (even more so than I thought), especially when you plan to eat your prop when done with it. My wife makes a very special chocolate lava cake that she whips out only on special occasions. Fortunately for the boys and I she deemed assignment #6 special enough to bring this bad boy out. Part of the joy of this cake is eating it immediately out of the oven. Attempting to shoot it immediately out of the oven taught me that very pretty chocolate syrup drizzles don't stay that way as heat radiates from the cake. The same goes for beautifully grated chocolate. In fact, when shooting began the top of the cake was nicely covered in chocolate flakes. As you can see, there are only a few that weren't nearly immediately absorbed into the icing. In the end none of that mattered though as I drowned my sorrows in a tall glass of ice cold milk and devoured the evidence!

I started with a lighting solution that combined natural light and strobes. In the end, natural light won.

I wanted my photo to be more conceptual/abstract rather than a 'pure' food photograph, but had trouble coming up with a suitable idea.
In the end I settled for a simple shot of a block of chocolate:

I wish I could say this shot is my take on Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, but it's more of an attempt to make a simple block of chocolate look somewhat visually interesting.

This was the kind of difficult that I love. I dig tabletop photography.

Had a cropping issue, part of the learning curve...
Alternate image that will probably wind up in my kitchen...

The lighting for this is the same as the top shot with the exception of the second light. Just the softbox with an SB-25.
Here's my setup sketch for the top image:

The high key, brownie only was done without a sketch. I was just trying stuff to get some ideas. I did the sketch after and then I did the top shot from the sketch. I did deviate from the sketch as I moved the LP160 from camera left to camera right.
I also figured out how to post images at a larger size. Noob no more.

Most time spent on the cooking and chocolate decorations!!
Lit with bounced flash off to the right, window to the left.
Edited: I am now wondering if I should have used a reflector to lhe front left to bounce some light back into the left hand side???
Glass really is unforgiving for fingerprints isn't it?
I tried a couple of different backdrops, but I think it worked best on an old sheer curtain.
Tired a couple of different crops too-still not sure this is the best one though.
Now I have to go and eat chocolate
I like the composition of this one, but the focus is wrong..

I really struggled with this one, and this ended up being my third idea. Had a really hard time with the compositions, just couldn't find a shot that really grabbed me. That being said, here is my submission.
Edit: after a few hours of thinking about it I realized why I was unhappy. Although I knew I needed to crop to a square format, I did not keep that in mind enough while shooting. I always think "get closer" and "fill the frame", and that left me with an awkward composition when I cropped it square. Should have left more room around the subject in camera to allow space for cropping. Just thought that I would share what I learned.

The spectral highlights were the challenge. I usually don't use strobes on anything still (unless it will thaw). I didn't on this shot either.
I was caught having to use an expansive range of exposure and just decided to let go of the highlights.
Hope the AD is happy :-)
edit
Re the "lensbaby" effect.
This is two layers. The top layer is a duplicate with gaussian blur applied and then erased where I wanted sharp focus.
Cheap and easy post trick. I call it my "faux by 5" look (4x5) ;-p

I had a model shoot scheduled for this afternoon, and it took very little arm-twisting to get her to sample a little chocolate for the camera. Here's her reaction, square format and all. (My photo seemed to disappear after I submitted it. Don't know why, but I think the problem is solved now.)

This has been by far the most challenging thing I have ever tried to shoot. Composing the food was really tough.
I spent two hours trying to make the strawberry splash in chocolate syrup, they were more like chocolate tsunami's. Then I read FenwickArtPhoto suggestion to water down the syrup by 50%. Thanks for the tip, might just pull this and try again.

Had a lot of fun with this one.... my daughters and I had fun "cleaning up" afterward as well!!!
I more fully appreciate the food stylists, I had a lot of trouble getting things set in reasonable position and "clean". Getting all the little crumbs off the cake was a chore.....maybe if I had it colder it would cut better...
In hind-sight, I did not include enough "vertical" elements to fill the square more effectively. No time to re-shoot.... have to spend more time working out.........for the next.......month!!!

Hi! :)
This is my first attempt at indoor lighting, and after having sat in on a couple of the Project 52 live demonstrations, I'm fairly happy with what I was able to accomplish with the materials I have available [some extreme DIY lighting here... LOL]. So, I'm submitting image #1 as the choice I'm going with because I feel that it is better lit and in sharper focus.

I like the composition of image #2 better, however, but again, I feel like the lighting isn't doing it for me, and the depth of field is too narrow.

p.s. In case anyone wondering why I have multicolored rocks on my plate, yum: www.applecrumbles.com/2009/11/04/rock-chocolate-candy/
--ETA: I did a reshoot of the second version I'm happier with!

Ugh, why didn't I post my little picture before looking at all of your lovely shots? Now, I'm drooling for chocolate!
We have this really old diner table and I've always wanted to incorporate it into a product shot. Luckily Joanie, my wife, had gone out and bought some Valentine's treats from Cecelia downtown. I made many arrangements and tried natural light, and decided to mix in the on-camera flash with the natural to give it a 'diner' look! Oh, the pretzels were marvelous ;)

This was a more difficult assignment than I had predicted. I forgot to wear gloves when touching the chocolates and got fingerprints all over them, oh well. Chocolate is a lot harder to style than I had thought.

I also shot some on a white plate with neutral gray background, but didn't have enough depth of field. I used my 105mm macro, at f5.6. I think if were to re shot it, I would use my 24 to 85mm and work for more depth of field. My wife baked the cakes, but not enough. I could have used more to shoot - and eat. A fun project.
Below is a shot of my setup.

Wow I have a new appreciation for food photography. Never did it before so it challenged me but it was sure fun. Thanks for stretching us Don.

This was my first concept. It had to be cooked and it was trick trying to get the chocolate to ooze out onto the plate without looking too messy. It was shot with just overhead incandescent lighting with a custom white balance. I used a tripod to shoot a small f stop for definition/depth of field, which required a long shutter speed (both photos).

This was my back-up concept, Frozen chocolate Bon Bon's. I didn't have to cook them and only had to worry about defrosting. Again I used overhead incandescent lighting with a custom white balance

Here's my go. I knew ages ago what I wanted to shoot - a Toblerone bar because of its strong triangle shape, I was trying to decide on the best background. Settled, in a flash of inspiration (or persperation!) on a pice of gold card.
Lighting - bare flashes through home-made A4 paper diffusers either side, white reflector at rear out of shot to maintain tone of background.

pete
ps I'm not sure about the restaurant aspect of a choc bar tho, without there being a (con)textual link.

Friends of ours came over for dinner last week and brought a cake for dessert, which they iced right before we ate it.
This, of course, was a great opportunity for this assignment. I used a single light in a sock-covered PLM over the cake and tilted towards the camera. For one shot, I composited several different white-card highlights together (as demonstrated by Don), while the other is just a single image with local adjustments.
I tried doing a shot with candies being thrown in the air, but it was a lot more difficult than I would have thought just to get something in the frame, let alone focused. On top of that the wrappers were very reflective. Definitely need to experiment more.
