Let's start the new year with a new contest, an ugly train contest! I know in your train research browsing you've come across at least one train item that struck you as the ugliest train you'd seen. Well, now's your chance to build it! The contest is open to all manner of trains: locos, rolling stock and train accessories. Entries must be 8 wide or less and be able to operate on some version of Lego track, if applicable. Locos do not need to be powered, but would increase your chances.

There will be 2 categories and 2 prizes. The first is overall ugliest train and the second will be for most accurate ugly. The prize for each category will be a brand new power functions rechargeable battery! Sorry, charger not included because this is an international contest. Entries must be based on a real object that the entrant can provide photos of or links to. You do not need to enter a specific category; both winners will be chosen from all entries. Judging will be handled by yours truly and also by informal voting by all of us as the cream, so to speak, usually rises to the top in the end.

The deadline for entries will be February, 28 2010 so everyone should have plenty of time. Now get out there and build something ugly!

PS - I'm hoping to at least double the number of entries from the 666 contest! ; )

Excellent. Now I just have to search my memory for super uglies. Hope I won't offend Carl by linking to his absolutely excellent rendition of the absolutely ugly BR Class 42/43 for inspiration.

This is also seriously ugly:

Super Chief (or was this just the Chief?) got even uglier after they rebuilt it -

I think the Class 70 looks pretty terrible, but would be great inspiration for a fictional sci-fi engine. Just my two cents.

^ Somehow that chief looks like a frog nose to me.

^^ Yeah it would be good inspiration. Technically that was actually not inspired by a class 70 as I'd never seen one but it definitely shows similarities.

Hey! To me, this contest sounds like it'll be some serious fun for everybody.

...And I have no idea what to build! Hmmm. Sounds like few nights worth of internet pic hopping are in my near-future plans so I can find that alsolutely perfectly ugly piece of railroad gear to prototype.
JamesOfJames 6 years ago
Just to point something out, we haven't really looked into ugly rolling stock yet. Though I can't really imagine what that would look like, since it's generally utilitarian or purposefully prettied-up.
admin
gambort PRO 6 years ago
^ I'm not sure this truly counts as ugly but it seems neither utilitarian nor prettied-up to me

I'm looking for rolling stock examples too. I suspect 'modified' cabooses will rank highly. And rail maintenance equipment.

Here's one I want to rebuild, she is over 3 years old now and needs a major redesign.

- Wow that thing looks awesomely shitty. A track gang car, I'm guessing? Only problem is the trucks are painted, so it loses a couple ugly points there. :)

Hi all. New to these posts. Let me suggest:

The Mighty Mouse

I'd try it myself, but for lack of time. To do it (ugly) justice it needs to be narrow gauge.

If I understand you here, with the former, it could be a totally fictitious train, so long as it's ugly?

Oh come on now. A high nosed U Boat is certainly different but I wouldn't exactly consider them ugly. : )

As for ugly diesels I give you the chop nosed GP7 and GP9. I love the Western Maryland but the nose job the "Wild Mary" gave those GP's is just hideous.

Um. Isn't that an SD9? ; )

Well at least whoever chopped the nose on that SD (was it Trona?) put a two piece windshield on it. I think that's what bothers me most about the WM chops. That one piece windshield they used always gave them a Uni Brow look in my eyes. Also the proportions seem to work better with that SD than the GP's for a nose chop.

Good find Lego JClass! I was planning on posting that one too! Hopefully I have time to built one of those seventies/eighties american GE/GM electric loco's before the deadline (not really good with deadlines...) if anything's ugly, than its those guys!
JamesOfJames Posted 6 years ago. Edited by JamesOfJames (member) 6 years ago
The thing about that GM6C is that it looks like a selectively compressed model which then got full-sized somehow. It doesn't look good, but I'm yet to find something sufficiently ugly.

@ JamesofJames,

That class 70 looks awesome! It's a pug-faced beauty. I hope you're going to build us one :)

This contest has actually inspired me to build a train. Lately, I've been concentrating on building stuff for my trains to drive by.
JamesOfJames 6 years ago
Well, the one I posted wasn't a Class 70, it was some (I think) custom-built or -rebuilt unit of Santa Fe's.

From a cultural perspective I find it funny that Europeans come up with sleek new forms of ugliness while Americans mess up their old designs with new ratios of ugliness.

I guess that reflects something...

The Great Western Railways 2600 Kruger built during the Boer War period and due to their ugly looks were nicknamed after Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, President of the South African Republic (Transvaal) at that time.

The first in the class was built as a 4-6-0

A basic works drawing also of the 2-6-0 variant of which 19 were built.

As many ugly trains as we found, I was surprised we didn't have more entries.

On a related note, could we have perhaps have contests run longer for those of us who are less-focused builders? Or perhaps a minimum amount of entries with the cutoff date?
admin
gambort PRO 5 years ago
I was surprised too but I don't think extending the closing-date will make any difference. People either find something that fits the ticket or they don't. No-one has piped up saying they need more time.
JamesOfJames 5 years ago
That's certainly true. How about next time, put a nudge in the OP about sort of RSVPing if you have serious interest in entering? That would help gauge interest, anyway.
