Do you have what it takes to build like a boss? Take those mad building skills and imagine a notorious video game boss. Now’s your chance to show us what it looks like! Will it be a crazy machine with guns ablaze or a giant tentacled creature that smashes everything in sight? Build what you think is a tough-to-beat video game boss (or you can make one from an existing game).

- Submit 1 photo of your creation in the entries thread no later than December 31, 2012. A short description is optional.
- Dioramas are allowed to add context, but only the boss will be judged.
- Size limit is 96 studs (length of 2 large gray baseplates) in any dimension.
- Decals, cut stickers, and custom parts from recognized vendors are allowed. Modified Lego elements and clone brand parts are not.
-Limit 1 entry per person.
- No LDD entries.

- The winner will be determined by a panel of 12 other FOLs on Flickr. Their names will be announced after the contest, until then I will not know who they are.
-Your entry will be judged on your building skill, presentation, and how much your creation is like a boss.

-The Brothers Brick has generously donated gift cards to Lego S@H or the Lego stores, perfect for picking up the 2013 sets!
First place: $250 gift card
Second place: $100 gift card
Third place: $50 gift card
Honorable mentions (up to 4): $25 gift card

Post questions and comments here. Good luck!

Mecharonn 6 years ago
I'm definitely entering! It seems so fun and to see other people's idea. :D
But the only problem is the age, for example a 12 year old against an 18 year old doesn't seem fair, but I don't mind. :3

Does it have to be a ship? or can it be a big animal or some thing??

Wow! I'm totally in the mindset to build some video games right now. Expect one soon.

Not really into video games, but like Blake Baer said, the prizes are what's making me want to do this... : 3

About 'Modified Lego elements'.. that's a bit of a gray area.

What is allowed?

-Disassembling asseblies, such as gearboxes, motors, or lightbricks
-Cutting flexible pneumatic tube (that's what it's for, some sets require it.)
-Cutting ribbed tube (again, some sets prompt you to cut ribbed tube)
-Cutting semi-flexible thin tube (not sure if lego has done this, so...)
-Broken parts
-Bent parts (like bent rigid tube)
-Painted parts

Am I missing anything? As I said, it's a gray area and needs some clarification.

Anyway, that prize money...
Mecharonn 6 years ago
Does it have to be an existing video game boss?
Nannan Z. PRO 6 years ago
Go with what makes sense to you. Many people are fine with cutting tubes or disassembling certain elements, whereas painting pieces would be a more drastic modification. I will contact anyone before the deadline if I think their creation has excessively crossed the boundaries.

sounds great! muhahaha!
gid617 6 years ago
Sounds cool! Haven't built any big bad guys before, but I guess I could try!
theinformaticist 6 years ago
LEGO instructions for the Space Needle instruct you to cut flex-tube (semi-rigid) to length. So I guess it's canon now.
Siercon and Coral PRO 6 years ago
Trial by fire my young friend. You'll do great and learn more than we ever did about Legos at your age. And no, it can either be a real video game boss, or a new imaginary one.

Ahh yes the quandary.
I'd say most likely no and encourage against the last three on your list. And without giving a detailed response to each example, go with what Nannan said. Do what makes sense. If the possible illegal/grey technique is a HUGE focal point to your entry then maybe you should talk specifics, but if there's a little grey in an otherwise beautiful moc, go with it.

Bosses come in all shapes sizes, technologies and eras. It could be anything from ships and aliens to monsters and demons.

Just a clarification, are you allowed to build an existing boss or do you have to come up with a completely new idea?

"Build what you think is a tough-to-beat video game boss (or you can make one from an existing game)."

That should help some.

@eldeeem, well. I was about to ask the same indeed :P

Might have skipped it although I doubt it.
But it would be interesting to know if 1 entry is the limit.

This contest sounds like a lot of fun and let's admit it, the prize pot is quite amazing. Although I have so much other stuff to worry about I'll try my bst at entering.

Yea, 1 entry per person. I'll add that to the rules.

I was just thinking about that. Oh well. Count me in. :)

Could I build a car, if it's a racing game?
Jameson42 PRO 6 years ago
I would think you could build a car, as long as it's "really boss". :-P

The boss I'm building isn't a traditional boss, either. Not gonna say what, though.

Robo-Knight Posted 6 years ago. Edited by Robo-Knight (member) 6 years ago
Also, I'm just wondering, would a large structure with a Villain manning a control interface using the structure as a weapon count as a Boss as well?

According too the Contest Guidelines anyway.
Julandrius 6 years ago

I think you'd do better creating an actual creature that counts as a boss. Because the rules state the boss will be judged, not the suroundings he's in.

So if you make a building that counts as your boss you're kind of violating the rules :P Kind of
Siercon and Coral PRO Posted 6 years ago. Edited by Siercon and Coral (admin) 6 years ago

It would depend on a definition of structure, but here is the general idea: The boss needs to be the essence of the trial, and the physical struggle. There are many excellent versions of bad guy bosses that utilize machines. But for all of them, these machines have character. The word 'structure' seams to imply something inanimate or boring.

But if you're trying to describe bosses similar to these:

The Krang from TMNT:
Dr. Evo Robotnik from Sonic
Lex Luthor from Superman: any version of his mech monsters.

These are all examples of masterminds who though physically boring, they are placed behind a more scary flamboyant 'monster/boss'

If that's what you mean, you're golden. :D Hope this helps.

P.S. I dont mean this to say inanimate bosses are out. there are many games with very scary and imposing bosses that have no 'character' But, usually the ones 'controlled' by bad guys are more focused on the ferocity and trial of defeating the machine. Just remember that the rules are very open to a variety of epic bosses, some will just be more awesome than others. It's open to interpretation, just try to read in between the lines :)

I would not be the first person to post a difficult scenario in the PC game Mist.

But hey, an 18 wheeler in frogger... that could be scary and outside of your normal 'boss' idea and stretching into the impersonal (though I'm guessing you would score higher if it had 'cars' like expressions and characteristics.
Robo-Knight Posted 6 years ago. Edited by Robo-Knight (member) 6 years ago
I don't wish too list any spoilers for it, but it would be story driven and various fears put into a psychical form.

Should I list what I have in mind then?
Si-MOCs PRO 6 years ago
I was thinking of doing frogger >:{
Now I'll have to think of something else.
Siercon and Coral PRO Posted 6 years ago. Edited by Siercon and Coral (admin) 6 years ago

You dont need to list them here publicly. If you feel like your question needs to be covered in more specifics you can probably FM Nannan. Just double check, and reread the contest descriptions etc. before hand to make sure it's necessary :) Steph and I would offer to help more specifically, but I hope to enter into the contest as well.

haha, looks like you're stuck with pong and the "Undefeatable-giant-enemy-paddle-of-super-springiness-and-ultimate-doom!" (Yes we have been playing too much Skylanders) :)

Structure bosses are fine by me. I'm reminded of the boss from the first level of Contra (though it doesn't look too interesting).

Keep in mind I'm not judging, and the judges will be going by their own interpretation of the rules. Bottom line is do what makes sense. The rules are very broad so it's unlikely anyone will get DQ'd unless they build an inanimate object such as a chair.

Do the rules specify that it can't be a minifigure?

But the problem is it would have custom work which would break the modifying Lego elements, that is if they were used. Which in turn would mean it wouldn't be made of Lego.

So I guess I answered my own question.
SharkyProductionz [deleted] 6 years ago
I already posted one. Check it out!

Ok, epic contest. But one quick question. Do we make up a boss and it's vehicle/ship thing or do we make an existing boss' ship/vehicle thing?
