Hardest Animal to Spot Outside

For me, it is the Bat-Eared Fox. Never seen it even once. I'm trying again this Saturday. What animal at the L.A. Zoo have you never seen?

(The Orange County Zoo, incidentally, claims to have a Channel Islands Fox. It can be seen sleeping on a certain platform in its enclosure. I wonder if it is stuffed.)

If you go right when the zoo opens then you might be able to see it or if you go towards the end.

For me it has to be the Green Turaco in the big aviary. I've seen it once, but it was by luck. It doesn't help that it can camouflage with the trees inside.

Also, the tufted deer, steenbok, and short nosed echidna.

I've had good luck seeing the echidna lately. Not so good for the deer or the steenbok.

The other canine of mystery for us is the Wild African Dog.

The wild dogs are similar to the Bat-eared foxes. Go early or at the end of the day.

That's how the maned wolf works, too. Must be a doggy sort of thing.

I checked out the Bat-Eared Fox and saw his ear by standing on my tip-toes! (I am 6'4" so this may not work for everyone.) Still no Wild African Dogs.

Hopefully one day you'll get to get a photo of either of the two. They are amazing animals to see and photograph.

Re: the wild african dogs

It is partly the exhibit. When the gray wolves were in there I saw them 1 out of 10 times.

I haven't yet snapped a good shot of the maned wolf in 16 years of membership to the zoo.

I'd say the indian rhino gets an honorable mention for only showing her rump.

Yeah, the Wild dog exhibit does not help take a photo of the dogs.

The maned wolf is another story. To take a photo of the maned wolf you just must be lucky.

A new female maned wolf recently joined him on exhibit. He's usually sleeping under the log in the middle of the exhibit. She's more easy going and seems to roam around the exhibit. I caught her sleeping by the wall up front. It was a bit hard to take photos because of the railing, but if you are lucky, you should be able to get pretty good shots of her.
