My Dad was in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Yokota A.F.B. for 3 years when I was a young kid, attending the school on the base. We lived just offbase near Gate One in the small town of Fusa, with ricefields in the back yard and tatami mats on the floor. Mostly I remember the robots which I collected, the old steam train that tore through the back yard, and the smell of Japanese chewing gum.

Where did you live?

Hi everyone, I just got news of my JET posting in the Gunma Prefecture, not sure which city/town/village yet. What is Gunma like? Any words of advice or places to see, things to do, people to meet, etc. ???

Hi there, I live in Tsukuba, currently, and have been here for over two years. I tend to drive a lot between Mitsukaido (Joso) and Iwai (Bando). Tsukuba's ok but a bit too modern for me. I'd probably be happier up the small, local mountain ... or somewhere like Kyoto. Anyhow, it's fine for now. I have a website which I'm building as an ongoing project and I'm trying to collate interesting links and stuff about Japan. If there are any links to great sites which you know of, any interesting things you like me to add to the website, please let me know. Just visit www.japansomethingstuff.com
Cheers, J

I lived in Nippon from 3/01 - 4/04...lived in Tsukaba-shi, Ibaraki-ken for about a yr...moved on to Kasiwa-shi, Chiba-ken for about 1.5 yrs...and then the grand finale in Ebisu (actually, Ebisu -> Meguro -> Naka-Meguro...it's a loong story).

Lots I miss about living there...and lots I am glad to be away from.
JAPANeyes529 11 years ago
Originally from Yokohama but have been living here in Ebisu since 2004.
Close to my office in Tameike Sanno and convenient in many ways, but personally speaking I love Yokohama more to live a relaxing life...

I have been living in Sapporo, Hokkaido for the past year as a student, but will soon be returning to Canada, as my programme is ending.
I've been living in Iwakuni, Japan for almost 10 years now. I was born in Hiroshima, Japan but moved and came back to Japan when I was still a child and lived here since. I have also lived in Okinawa, Japan for a couple years (but when I was very very young!).
Iwakuni is in the Yamaguchi prefecture, just south from Hiroshima prefecture and just north of Kyushu.

I'm new here in this group, been in Japan for 3 years, orig Sydney.
Currently I am living in Midori ku, Nagoya its a nice place to live there are plenty of shops and it is close to the underground and Meitetsu lines, even though it is close to everything it does not feel like a concrete jungle, hence the name Midori,(green).

Lived in Katsutadai, a fairly quiet town on the Keisei line between Tokyo and Narita. Seeing all the messages has made me think about digging out my old (film) photos of Japan. Might even get around to scanning a few and posting them. I've been back to visit friends in Yachiyodai couple of years back. Very fond memories. Great place. It has a texture and a feeling you can't get anywhere else (though Helsinki was a bit reminiscent strangely enough!)

Lived in Isesaki, Gunma-ken from January 2002 to August 2003. I was also in Yokosuka, Kanagawa-ken for the summer of 2005 and I thought that was a great town. There's an American base there, so it can get kind of old running into sailors and American contractors, but they're pretty concentrated downtown. It was fun to shock the locals by speaking Japanese, since they're so used to foreigners who don't speak the language. It's perfect size for me: all the conveniences of a city without being as crazy or crowded as Tokyo. There are also a few nice nearby beaches and Tokyo's only an hour train ride away...

I lived in Kobe from July 2000 to October 2001 as a Nova Teacher. It was a great city and I highly recommend it if you are looking for somewhere to visit or live in Japan. It was stretched between the mountains and the sea of Japan and was just a short distance away from Himeji Castle. After a year, my Japanese wasn't nearly as far along as I had hoped because there were so many gaigin in the area....I spoke way too much English for my own good!

Anyone live in my old village of Fusa, near Yokota AFB? I lived there as a kid when my Dad was stationed there, and I have managed to return a few times in the ensuing years. The main road looks the same, but my old house near Gate 1 was in shambles, but I managed to scribble my name on the wall before it's apparent immenent destruction: "Carl Parkes Once Lived Here."

Also, any Air Force brats once living in nearby Tachikawa or now closed and probably completely forgotten Johnson AFB?
