Prime lens!

brash recess [deleted] 6:25pm, 3 May 2009
I recently purchased a prime lens the canon 85 f1.8 lens. Although i have a 28-135 can on lens the zoom lens doesn't have the sharpness that prime lens do. BUT there more work and you have to adjust to the shot more. In other words you become the zoom. Any experiences with prime lens and has it made a better photographer out of you

I absolutely love my 50mm. It's my favorite lense.

I'm just wondering because i have a 70-200 f2.8 lens and i'm in need of a macro lens. I'm still in the range to return the lens and get the macro instead but the sharpness of the 85 is awesome. But money is tight and i'm wondering if i should just keep this lens and learn from the prime experience. The lens i was thinking about was the tamron 90sp macro which has great reviews amoung the macro world

I think you have to keep in mind want you want to shoot....
the 85mm (which I also bought new a month ago) is an excellent portrait lens and does create that nice DoF and buttery background. It also allows you to shoot in more dim situations.
I also read tons of reviews before I purchase a new lens and think twice about what it is that I want to shoot. Otherwise, I heart my 85mm!
to be 3 again....

The 50mm is a killer. The most bang for your buck.

I am now using only prime lenses - Have 50mm F/1.4G & 24mm F2.8D. Also have used a 105mm F2.8G VR rental, planing to buy one soon.

Prime lenses are very sharp, no doubts about it. Many newer model pro-zoom lenses can compare to the prime lens sharpness.

Only zoom I have used is the 70-200mm F/2.8G VR rental lens just for a stage shoot. Pictures were very sharp, the VR really helped shooting hand held.
