Take a great shot that includes a silhouetted object or person. Post it here and tell us how you went about shooting it.

Here's a reminder how to post to the assignment:
1. Become a Flickr member.

2. Take a shot and upload it to your Flick account

3. On that photo's page, click the "all sizes" tab

4. Choose "Small"

5. Under the photo, it will say "Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage" - Select and copy that text.

6. Go to THIS post and in the "reply" box, paste the HTML script. Feel free to include a few comments about the shot after it.

7. Use the 'preview' function to make sure it worked, or click "post now" to submit it to the discussion!

Is this a Grid Box or a Snoot? Are they the same thing? Why would this help with a silhouette? Suggestions if we don't have an external flash?

An external flash is not necessary to take a silhouette shot.

David,
A grid spot snoot helps you control where light lands from an external flash. Great for portraits, but I'm not sure how this would help with a silhouette shot unless you're backlighting. The shot you are mentioning where the model's face shows up is not a silhouette.

Here's an example of a silhouette:

Here is my silhouette. I shot this on my way to work this morning. There really isn’t a focal point because of the many lines, but I still thought it looked cool. I basically just cropped and bumped up the saturation to give the clouds alittle more emphasis.

EXIF Info:

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -2 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire
Aperture priority

burnt down house

i hope this counts as a silhouette....it was taken from inside a burnt down house on the south side of indy....everything inside was gutted out and destroyed, but the playhouse in the yard remained unscathed....

BEACH DREAMS (Florida)

This photo was taken a week or so ago while here in Bonita Beach, Florida. It was shot at the private beach access for Bonita Bay residents. Beautiful night.
