There seems to be no way to mail multiple people any more so this has to be a discussion topic.

After not having posted for a shamefully long time I've got together about 50 candidates for GWL. I've posted five (the posting limit), one has been guessed, one or two others may get more guesses and the other two or three look likely (in spite of regular addition of clues) to graveyard with no more guesses.

I could graveyard any as soon as they go a bit quiet, but with that approach I'd get through all my 50 with little activity. That's what happened with the other GWL on ipernity until Jen changed the rules to allow an unlimited number of concurrent posts from one member, but limited to three postings per day.

If we had that here, we might double the pool size and have much more activity. OK, I admit that the other GWL didn't take off with that approach, but it had 35 members and we have 1790, at least in name. There'd be a lot of deadish wood amongst the older posts, but that wasn't a big problem in the days when GWL was active and healthy. We have very old posts here, just proportionally fewer.

So I'm proposing that group members should be able to post an unlimited number of GWLs at one time, or some high number like 25, but should be limited to posting 3 per day.

What could go wrong? Well, anyone who wilfully ignores the rules would be able to do more damage. But that damage is limited only to rubbish in the pool, max three per rogue member intil they're banned, assuming that one admin checks once per day. I'm an admin only by courtesy, from when I was trying to find out how to work round the flickr redesign damage. But I offer to to my share of pruning of this sort if the posting rules were changed.

So - what do we think?

I wouldn't argue with the proposition that the pool limit be increased. But I'm not sure that this would necessarily increase activity significantly. The number of active guessers is fairly small now and not all of those are very active, I don't mean to sound gloomy but if we are to increase activity I think we need to think more widely than the pool restriction.

Well, I agree. But if potential new members or returnees look in and there are a hundred unguessed posts as in the past, this is more likely to keep them involved. May well not be enough, but flickr is usable again* so the conditions are as they used to be when we were busy.

*not sure exactly what they did. But they must have dropped the autosizing that made the picture push all other content off the visible page.

No, auto-resizing is still there. I guess you get used to anything.

Overall I agree with Jim. Sorry I don't have any positive suggestions to make at the moment. I would be happy to see the photo limit increased to say 10, and see how that goes.

I would be against unlimited posting, because it's already hard enough getting posters to add new clues, or even respond to guesses reasonably promptly. (I know I've got worse at this than I used to be). An additional problem is that the number of people actively interacting is now very small and many photos don't attract a single guess, which is not very motivating either for posters or potential guessers.

The changes in Flickr seem increasingly inhospitable to interactive groups, especially via mobile and tablet interfaces. My own involvement with the group, and with Flickr generally is much more intermittent than it used to be - partly because of life changes, but also because of the reduction in the community feel of it.

By the way, there is a group where GWL admins can discuss group rules/changes etc:

www.flickr.com/groups/37567151@N00/discuss/72157656937294...

But maybe here is better.

I stumbled into this site by accident just as I have now stumbled into 'ipernity' and see familiar names from this site. I puzzle over how to remove guessed shots and if there's a way of keeping them on one's own stream, complete with answers etc.
I enjoy this 'game' but do find it all consuming and going off at a tangent. Also my ISP keeps dropping out for several days and leaves me high & dry. I have introduced at least one other player and had guesses from my stream regulars. Increasing the alloted input up from 5 would mean less time to take the shots, and consume more time at the PC- comfortable though it maybe. Maybe an 'admin' should remove 'spent' shots elsewhere if not already?

Laters:

You post photographs to your stream and then add them to the group. After the picture location has been identified you add it to the 'You Guessed Me' discussion thread and then a few days later remove it from the group pool. The photograph can remain in your stream with any discussion comments and guesses for as long as you want. You don't have to delete picture to remove it from the group pool.

There's a group called Guess Where London - Geotagged where, once guessed, geotagged on the map and with a postcode in tags, your pictures can sit for ever. On the other hand I seem to be about the only member to have done this for quite some time. I do it when I am adding to You Guessed Me and removing it from the pool, so it's all part of a single admin operation. It would be nice if more people did :)

Do we know if the admins of that group are active enough to allow others to join?

I'm an admin with power to promote. Would you like to join the admin ranks, socarra?
Jim529 PRO 2 years ago
They let me in recently so they seem to be active now.

I do see however that the group has three photos of Big Ben at the front!

Ooh, do you get a badge if you're admin?

Sadly, for me this group is losing its edge, and whilst its fun if people respond, often they don't and one has to weave between answered guess's, one's who've fallen asleep, and new ones, -which are few and far between. Perhaps its just a winter game, and i'll come back then? Or maybe if it would help, using correct guesses I could create a map of popular areas and others can find newer areas to tackle and things might gain a bit more interest. It's also hard to know who's admin and who's duty admin etc, and what the rules are.

Socarra, I've just promoted you to "overall" status. Congrats, and welcome to our humble ranks. No badge, unfortunately.

Laters, the group is often slower in the summer. Please don't go away! You've had some of the most interesting photos recently, and they have generated a lot of commenting and guessing. Do keep them coming! You're right that there are some guessed photos in the pool that haven't been moved to You Guessed Me, which is the responsibility of the poster of the photo, not the admins. I admit that I've been better in the past at sending reminders to people who have guessed photos lingering in the pool, but I've fallen down on this of late. I'll try to improve. I've noticed a couple other admins doing this duty as well.

One problem I'm having is that I can't easily do my admin tasks from my tablet when I'm away from my computer. I tried and tried the other day to remove the five iconic selfies from the pool, but Flickr on my tablet was not cooperating. Fortunately, someone else hit the X and got rid of them.

As for rules, they are all on the About tab in the group header. Admins are shown as "overalls" on the Members tab. Of the 26 admins, I think only about 7 are active at the moment.

I'm happy to try to answer any other questions that people might have.

Thanks Trailerfullofpix for your kind words and insight. Yes tablets aren't as effective as desktops, I hardly use mine now.

Yes, I like the idea of increasing the limit from 5 to 10.

Hello strangers - I am an absentee landlady both here and on the geotagged group.

I have just allowed the queue of new members to join the GWL-geotagged group, and have promoted Simon White to admin and Jim529 to moderator on the GWL-geotagged group, so hopefully there will be a chance of that group being more managed than it has been in recent years.

If they prefer, then the admin privileges should allow them to pass the buck to anyone else who is keen.

I think that there may be disadvantages to increasing the limit - certainly to as much as ten, given that there has developed a tendency for people to join the group, post pictures, and then not respond to guesses at all or only very occasionally. The current situation would hardly be improved by having more of these 'stuck' photos in the pool.

Can you send me an invite please Jim? I'll happily post in there
BTW, pol getting very low again! I can post a few more and will be back in London later this week, but mostly to places I've already covered rather intensively...

I wondered where my super powers came from. I'm happy to moderate (I've already removed some tourist shots).

I've let my pool shots diminish as I'm off on holiday, but will post again in the New Year.

Seems like 5 will remain the limit. In my own case, that might mean sending some images to the Graveyard of the Unguessed.

As for the newbie who post to GWL and a thousand other groups, or post images that can clearly be identified, they should be deleted without further comment.
