My next trip to London is coming up in mid-April, and I've been thinking that I'd like to do something while I'm there to give back to the city in some small way. I've looked into the possibility of volunteering at Southbank Mosaics. They are located in the crypt of St John's, Waterloo. When you volunteer, the staff give you a little training in mosaic technique, and then you work on one of their projects. Several GWLers have photographed their work, and I'm hoping that some of you might be interested in joining me.

UPDATED WITH MORE INFO:

When:Tuesday, April 22, 3-6 pm
Where: In the crypt of St John's, 73 Waterloo Road SE1

The people at Soutthbank Mosaics have asked me to send them a list of people who are coming, and what time they will be there. So, if you're definitely in, please let me know by April 13. I'll then send you the info sheet I got from SBM. They assured me that they can provide a secure place to put your bags, laptops, etc.

I've put this on upcoming as well: upcoming.yahoo.com/event/453740/

I'm back sometime on the 22nd, so I'm not available for mosaics, but I might be up for a drink in the evening, depending on flights.

Great idea though!

Not sure I can do the mosaic thing, but the 22nd might be a date for a meet, haven't had one for a while (and I missed the last one)!

South Bank would seem to be the sensible place.

Will get back with more concrete (South Bank, geddit?!) ideas soon!

I met a handful of GWLers when I was there last October and they all proved to be harmless and enjoyable, so I think I'm brave enough for an all-group meetup now. The dates of my visit are April 17-23, and any of those nights except the 19th would work for me.

I will try and book the Monday off in work, if I can't take the day off I'll be there on the Tuesday at 6pm.

I spent last Saturday with other GWLers in Portobello Road and they seemed quite normal.

Wow - thanks for that link trailerfullofpix! I took a set of photos of these Blake themed mosaics ages ago, but couldn't find anything out about their origin.

I shall have to go along, just to complete the story.

[Edit - but of course you knew that... I put one in GWL and you guessed it.]

Great! I've pencilled the dates in and will try to make it. Your logic about Tues afternoon into evening is a good idea.

Keep the 22nd April (evening) free, people, we are due a GWL meet....

trailerfullofpix 13 years ago
And anyone who wants to do the mosaic thing, let me know (either here or via Flickr mail) which day/times you prefer (I'm thinking maybe Tues 3-6-ish, but if we have critical mass for a different time block, that's ok with me). When early April rolls around, I will need to let the Southbank folks know when to expect us.

I'll try and make it if I can, having only met one GWL member. I get rather uneasy in crowded places, so hope none of you people bite :-)

I hope I'll be able to get to the evening meet. No one bit me at the last meeting Flickrway, so it was either safe or I was doing something wrong LOL

I almost never bite on the first meeting...

Yeah, although that mosaic thing sounds cool, and is in my area, sadly I'll be wage-slaving during the day! Should be around in the evening though!
Mags 13 years ago
I'll have to check the work diaries and see if I'm in town then - or able to take some leave. I survived a previous meet, so I can confirm the non-biteness of people....
suzigun 13 years ago
We're on leave that week so unless we're in town stocking up on potential GWLs we'll probably be avoiding London.

Up for the evening of the 22nd: do we have a venue yet?

"I almost never bite on the first meeting..."
it's that "almost" you need to worry about

Assuming my health has recovered I hope to make it. I once did some cobble stone laying for the National Trust. I wonder if that will help!

trailerfullofpix 13 years ago
I think Capo2 was going to think about possible venues, but I'm sure suggestions would be welcome. I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help at that.

Myrtle, hope you feel better. I'm sure those cobble stone laying skills will come in handy. I'll be in touch in a couple weeks with anyone who says they might be interested in Southbank Mosaics to confirm details.

I did dry stone walling as well. I was never meant to be a Londoner.

'it's that "almost" you need to worry about'

...and if you've met me before, of course...

22nd for an evening meet would be good idea.unfortunately won't be able to do the mosaic as wage slaving during the day.
I'll be wage-slaving that day, too, but will be looking forward to the evening meet. Oh, and I've met Yersinia twice now, and survived!

Sadly I can't get time off work on the Monday or Tuesday but I could still come Tuesday evening and be there (mosiacs) for 6pm and then go onto the RFH later.
Will you trailer, or anyone be at the mosaics at 6pm?
admin
trailerfullofpix 13 years ago
Sorry you can't get the time off, Maggie. I'm thinking I'll be at Southbank Mosaics from 3 to 6 on Tuesday, then head over to the RFH. Since they like you to put in 2 hours for training and working on the mosaic project, I'd suggest you skip it and come straight to the RFH. But that's just my suggestion :)
trueacronom 13 years ago
FYI: In the Poetry library, Level 5 of the RFH, there's currently a mini-exhibition of half a dozen or so panels created by Southbank Mosaics. Most, not all, are interpretations of William Blake's famous pictures.
maggie jones. Posted 13 years ago. Edited by maggie jones. (member) 13 years ago
Yes, trailer I probably will skip the mosaics as I can go anytime. Will just go straight to RFH.

@trueacronym - now that's what you call serendipity! Will have to make time to look at that exhibition.
ramson 13 years ago
I may be able to skip out of work that afternoon - and as it's 10mins walk from the office this makes it easier.

At mondoagogo's suggestion, I've put this on upcoming:

If you're an upcoming user, you'll know what to do.

And I did!
Secret Pilgrim Posted 13 years ago. Edited by Secret Pilgrim (member) 13 years ago
Will be at work that day, unfortunately.

Not too familiar with upcoming, where it says "watching" does that mean going there to watch the work in progress or watching the event through upcoming/flickr?

Sorry if I'm being thick!
admin
trailerfullofpix 13 years ago
I just started using Upcoming, so I'm no expert, but I think "watching" means you haven't yet decided if you're attending the event and you're watching to see who else is in either column.
mondoagogo 13 years ago
S'right, what she said.

I only suggested posting it on there 'cos I use it as my social diary since my laptop is busted and I can't get at iCal...!
unicorn123 :-) 13 years ago
A qq (quick question) have we decided whether to meet up for the evening? if so we could meet in the RFH bar and those of us who join later on can have a good look at the exhibition.Just an idea..

Just a reminder: please let me know soon (by 13 April if possible) if you are planning to join us at Southbank Mosaics. You can either mark yourself as attending on the Upcoming listing or send me Flickr mail. In the attending column, we've got: ramson +1, mondoagogo, trueacronom and me. (BTW, ramson has just posted pix of SBM's latest series of mosaics and ceramics in Salamanca Street.)

Cheers, and looking forward to meeting you lot soon.

OK, I'm going and hope to be there for 3.

Update: I confirmed our list of people with SBM and just heard from the art director that they are now planning to close at 5:30 pm on Tuesday. So, we will have time to check out the mosaic exhibit at the RFH before the gloatfest starts at 6, or can get to the bar a bit early and stake our claim to some space.
