Group DescriptionThe original Golden Record was launched by Carl Sagan and NASA with the 1977 Voyager Space Mission. It contained sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and was created in an effort to communicate with intelligent extraterrestrials.
The Collection invites you submit images you think should be included on a modern remake of The Golden Record. We will show the images sent to the group by 1 March 2009 on a screen in The Collection Orientation Hall in spring 2009 to cooincide with an exhibition of work by over 100 contemporary visual artists and performers who have also made images, sound and video greetings for a new Golden Record.
The group will remain open after this date and it will still be possible to add and view new images online. The exhibition, 'The Golden Record - Sounds of the Earth' will take place at The Collection from 21 March - 3 May 2009.
The three best images sent to the group by 1 March 2009 will be selected by Mel Brimfield, curator of 'The Golden Record' exhibition, and poet and performer John Hegley, whose work is included in the show, and will be printed and included in the exhibition. John Hegley will also select his one favourite image, to which he will perform a specially created poem at the exhibition opening on 20 March 2009.
