Dear all,

I'm really happy to announce the release of the 1.5.1.6 version of the G'MIC package. Here is the Changelog :

New features :

- New command '-triangle_shade' :

-triangle_shade x0,y0,x1,y0,x2,y2,R0,G0,B0,...,R1,G1,B1,...,R2,G2,B2,....

Draw triangle with interpolated colors on selected images.

Example(s) : image.jpg -triangle_shade 20,20,400,100,120,200,255,0,0,0,255,0,0,0,255

- New plug-in filter 'Arrays & Frames / Droste', which iteratively draws an image into itself :

- New command '-yinyang' which draws a yinyang symbol on selected images.
- New command '-to_pseudogrey' which converts a [0,1785] scalar image into a pseudo-grey color image.

Improvements / modifications :

- Filter 'Arrays & Frames / Frame [painting]' can now render the frame as a new layer.
- Command '-lines' have been removed. Use '-rows' instead.
- Added new substituting string '{_expression}', which is similar to '{expression}' except that the output is convert to a 'readable' way, for outputing numerical values.

PhotoComiX : The droste filter has been backported to 1.5.1.5, so you can already test it, just by refreshing your filters.

Hi David, is it possible to leave the -exec command usable from G´MIC filters. I am using it for the 3D video conversion filter and by now i have no idea how to rewrite the filter and keep full functionality without that command (I use it to create temporary files and delete them afterwards and it only worked with -exec)?

Now that magic mirror effect Droste is something I've been wanting for a little while; was doing this manually but it's lots of work. Thanks a heap David. Going refresh and play now. :)

Rod (GIMPChat and the guy who posted just before this entry; lol) got my brains a whirling. It would be cool to have a rotational option with this preset too David. There are already some plugins that can sort of do this but no GUI; G'MIC would be perfect since it would give you a preview of how it will come out. :)

@Tom : Yes, you are right, we cannot delete files without this '-exec' command. I guess this is one sufficient reason to put it again.
Thanks for your remark Tom.

@Lyle : I have some further ideas to improve the droste effect, I just need a little bit of time :)

Saw your post at GIMPChat David; the angle rotation feature is crazy wonderful. Going to refresh after this post. Thanks again David. :)

One more thing David. currently, if your main layer has a transparent background, your droste result will cut the main layer before it instead of passing it through (see result below). I wonder if instead of the cut, you can allow the main (or layer above) to pass through. :)

@Lyle : Very nice idea Lyle, please refresh your filters, there is now a new 'Drawing mode' that should do the trick.

Good news David; look forward to trying out your implementation of Pseudogrey. Guess I'll have to wait til samj get some time to compile it for 64-bit. :)

Hi David. since the last two version I have a little issue when installing from zip folder (windows 32 bit). The files come including a zlib1.dll. This causes several plugins of GIMP to crash during start (..entry point not found..)
It is easy to fix, when I removed the zib1.dll from plugin folder all was fine, but it might be confusing for users.

Thanks for noticing it Tom.
But if I remove it, can I ensure this will work on every machine (I had to put it because this dll was missing on a 'basic' installation before).

Hi David, yes i agree, it seems to me that with the change to GIMP 2.8 this dll is already included, in older versions of GIMP that error never showed up.

Maybe it is good enough to include small txt file in the package informing the user that if the error shows up the .dll is double and he should remove one. I guess this is easier to find than to search through threads and postings.

PhotoComiX says:

I believe is a windows only problem, some of the gimp build (asfrom Partha and Samj) do include zlib.dll, some other build (as that from sergej on the Gimp for Windows sourceforge page ) not

to complicate the matter other plugins may include zlib.dll for the same reason of gmic

And that cause a misleading error message that point to a missed dll, where the problem is not that there is no any zlib.dll but instead then there are 2 or more

And i suspect the same may happen in case some other sw would add zlib.dll in the windows system or system 32 (or 64) folders.

As said solve is simple as delete the clones but no idea of how to prevent :
too much variable to consider, as example clones of zlib.dll could be in too much different places (gimp bin, lib, or in the plugin folder or in a user folder...maybe even in the windows system folder)

@Noble Guardian : Did you try to 'refresh' your filters ? These are handled by PhotoComiX and I believe they are located in his own filter source.

Noble Guardian says:

...what do you mean by that? - i tried Script-Fu Refresh scripts... restarted GIMP couple of times but still nothing.... they used to be in "Artistic" section - i checked all but this 2 are missing... reinstalled G'mic but still missing.. :(

PhotoComiX is available at Testing section with... but only "PhotoComiX Smoothing" can be found there.

I meant the 'Refresh button' located on the bottom right of the filter tree widget on the G'MIC plug-in interface. It adds a lot of new filters from external sources, including those from PhotoComiX (you should have something as 376 filters available after pushing this button).

Noble Guardian says:

That did the trick.

Thank you. ^^

- it added both Graphic Novel and Graphic Boost - and this one is "version 2" - was it updated to a new version?

Forest (GKweb.it) says:

Thank you very much for G'MIC 1.5.1.6!

I have some minor problems I would report, perhaps it's useful:

-The filter Black&White > Sketch has become much slower, though it works.

-The preset "Main Lines (Sketch)", derived from it, which I saved in the Faves (and shared, so you should have it), almost freezes, even with a very small image (more than one hour to complete the process). It used to be much quicker, before, but I don't know whether it is a problem of G'MIC 1.5.1.6 or of GIMP 2.8 (I have recently updated from GIMP 2.6).

-I get also a "Preview error" in Enhancement > DR Adjust

I'm presently using GIMP 2.8 with X11 on a Mac (Snow Leopard).

Thanks Forest, I need to have a look at these problems.
I don't explain why the Sketch algorithm is slower, this looks weird to me (I don't think I've noticed this on Ubuntu).

Also good news, the latest 1.5.1.6 seems to be already packaged for the following linux distros :

- Mageia : sophie.zarb.org/rpms/7d8dbfc6ad1fa9295fac7b1b7f7e0024
- Debian (sid) : packages.debian.org/fr/sid/gimp-gmic
It should then be available with next versions of Ubuntu as well.

Will this version of GMIC automatically install into the Gimp filters when installed? I haven't had the both of them together since 2.8 came out.

I use the G'MIC filters working in GIMP 2.8, without any problems.
The thing you must take care of is probably the path were the plug-in is installed. If you already installed G'MIC for GIMP 2.6 and want to re-install G'MIC for 2.8, the installer will probably propose you a default installation path for the 2.6 version of GIMP (not the 2.8).
You may have to correct the installation path proposed by the installer to make the plug-in working with GIMP 2.8

I downloaded the last version of G'MIC after the 2.8 Gimp..I unzipped the package but i only got extra folders of G'MIC in the same place as it was originally downloaded.
I didn't have 2.6 on my computer. If I need to find a path for it to install into the Gimp how would I do it? I have never had to before. Is there a place that gives us instruction? I may be able to follow it.

PhotoComiX says:

What is your OS ?

If windows and you have any problem with the installer the solution is very simple:

forget the installer and get the zipped version and unzip in C: users/yourname/gimp/plugins

anyway should be possible point the installer where you wish, so where is your gimp plugin folder, the place proposed by the installer is a default that you may modify

If you are using 64-bit GIMP then you might need to use samj's compile (which is available at gmic's sourceforge as well). I know that that's the one I have to use now. :)
