Andrew's staring whale.

0140 is a whale we have identified three times in Bermuda, always in March. It is the second time I have swum with it. On both occasions there were five whales but then the others left and 0140 stayed. This encounter was for an hour and a half and the whale consistently came to within ten feet of me and stared and stared and stared. There was another whale with this one- a strange one insofar as it seemed to be full grown judging by the length of its pectoral fins but it was much thinner and somewhat smaller and hid behind 0140 the whole time
ā€” at Bermuda

The encounter was an hour and a half (I was shaking with the cold water half way through) and at one point I glimpsed the tail and recognized the whale as one we had seen in two previous years. It was only later as I was going through old footage that I realized I had been in the water with the same whale and yes, it did exhibit the same behavior although not quite as close as ten feet (or less away). And Brenda, the answer to your question is yes, I did feel as if I was being observed. I wonder what its research shows?

Andrew's Magical whale:
My first close up underwater encounter was with Magical Whale 20 miles offshore Bermuda. I couldn't sleep for a week after the experience, I kept asking myself, "WHAT was that whale thinking?" I went through every scenario my imagination could summon up and finally my wife prescribed sleeping pills so I could switch my mind off. I didn't talk about that two-hour encounter for about a month afterwards, I became too emotional about it. I've had these encounters now several times- face to face for extended periods and I still wonder what is going on.

Brenda's Response
Gene, judging from everything I have seen of your trips, you have definitely had some incredible encounters and it is easy to see the respect you have for these amazing animals. In my limited time and above water encounters with them the one feeling I always have each time I am near them is "humble". I so agree that one can only wonder why after all the suffering and destruction humans have caused them, why do they bother with us?
