Organize - bulk delete tag from selected photos

view profile

J.Chin Photography says:

Another feature I'd like to see is in Organize, can we have
a way to mass delete a tag from a set of selected photos?

I've had several instances in the past where I've had to work around this. The best plan is to add a new tag to the photos you want to retain the old tag. Remove the old tag altogether. Then replace the new tag with the old tag.

It's a lot of work. It would be better to select a group of photos into a batch and delete a common tag.

Those interested in this feature may not be as limited as some would believe. I've run across a need for this feature many times myself. Thanks for the tag editing workaround suggestion.

I'd find that handy. I don't use batch tag editing as much as I'd like, because there's no way to batch remove any mistakes.

You can use your Tags page to edit or delete tags but it's all or nothing, no batching:

www.flickr.com/photos/me/alltags/

Maybe useful for you to edit the "Chineses" tag.

Here's a work around. Let's say you have many photos with the tag "BigGroup." Find the photos you want to remove the tag from. Tag them "GroupA." Then, clear that batch. In the organizer, do a tag search for "BigGroup -GroupA." Tag these as "GroupB." Now, go into the all tags page like Leo describes and delete the "BigGroup" tag. Wait 30 minutes. Now, delete the "GroupA" tag and rename the "GroupB" tag as "BigGroup." Presto!

The 30 minute wait is to ensure that Flickr has time to change all the selected tags. 2 minutes might be enough, or it make take 2 hours-- I dunno. But I think 30 minutes is long enough in most cases.

Thanks for the workarounds, sometimes 30 mins is too long to wait, you have to come back to it later and then forget where you have got to. i have done that before and got into a right old mess. i agree with the purpose of the thread that having a batch tag delete would be a definite reduction of wasted time.

If it is a simple misspelling you can find and edit the misspelt tags on your tags page. Presumably you do not want the misspelt tag on any photo. Go to You --> Your Tags --> All your tags in a big list (at bottom of page)

i asked for this many times. the fact that flickr has only batch add tag but no batch remove tag is a bug.

I too have asked for this for a long time, and consider it a BUG that it's not there. Come on flickr, what's taking you so long to add this essential feature?

Yes, this feature would be extremely useful. I'm discouraged from tagging when I upload sets because I know any tags I choose are going to be hard to remove without a lot of effort. :(

I've wanted to do this many times, too! Batch removing a tag should be as easy as batch adding a tag.

"Batch removing a tag should be as easy as batch adding a tag."

Very true.

But, as Leo suggested above, the All Tags page is very good for this sort of thing. I use this page at least once a week.

The main shortfall is that you can't change a particular tag on some photos -- only all the photos which have that tag.

But, for the "Chineses" tag mentioned above, the "All Tags" page would be perfect. Simply replace "Chineses" with "Chinese" and it's finished. Done.

It's a no-brainer that this function needs to be added.

i.e. You notice a typo in one of your tags after you've applied them to 500 of your photos... Surely there should be a way to remove that bad tag from all 500 photos in one go (within 20 seconds).

And this can't be all that hard for the Flickr devs to add...

It would collectively save many Flickr users HOURS and HOURS of time and trouble.

philippebierny says:

I use the iPhoto plugin for my uploads and just realized that I had accidentally clicked to add a (otherwise correct and frequently-used) tag to several hundred photos. I only noticed this once they were already uploaded to Flickr. I can't use the "Edit tag" function because there are hundreds of other photos CORRECTLY tagged with that tag.

First, the "add tags" function should become "add/remove tags".

Second, it should be possible to view and edit all the photos with a certain tag in "Batch Edit", like one can with sets, rather than being able to edit batches of maybe twenty, one at a time. An excellent method for this would be to create a smart albums feature, which would be nice in itself.

There is a way, as we've mentioned before. Go to your All Tags page, find the offending tag and click "Edit."

Say you had applied the tag "Higgh School" (with an extra G). When you get to the edit page above, simply remove the extra G and click save. It will replace all 500 of those tags with "High School."

loupiote (Old Skool) pro says:

here is the twisted workaround to remove a tag from a batch of photos:

example: remove that tag "foo" from some photos.

with organizer:

1) locate the photos where you want to keep the tag
2) add a unique tag (e.g. "keep foo") to those
3) delete the tag "foo" (to do that, go to a photo with the tag "foo", click the tag, and add "/delete" to the end of the tag url)
4) once the tag delete is complete, replace the tag "keep foo" by "foo" (to test that the tag delete is complete, check that no more photos have the deleted tag attached)

there is no 30 minutes to wait, the entire process takes a minute or so.

That removes the tag from ALL your photos, not just the ones in the batch.

You can also remove a tag from all photos by going to the tag list and clicking "delete".

It seems people keep misunderstanding this thread.

* There are already built-in ways on Flickr to remove every instance of a particular tag.

* There are already built-in ways on Flickr to edit every instance of a particular tag.

This thread is asking for the ability to remove *some* instances of a tag, from a batch of images, while leaving that same tag on other images.
