1. This link to the announcement on the Flickr Blog is dead:
blog.flickr.net/2012/12/11/our-latest-flickr-iphone-app/

2. Group pools and discussions now available: +1

3. Justified view in photostream and contacts: +1

4. Push notifications: +1

5. Not being a universal app that also works on the iPad: -1

Good catch! Updated, and should work now.

I like the shiny new app (I was even late to work the morning because I was busy playing with it).
D Tuazon Posted 12 years ago
Did they remove the download image to mobile option?
leesure Posted 12 years ago
Love it so far. Great that you added groups! That's been my chief complaint about the apps to date.

However, there appears to be no way to sort the groups order. I'm a member of quite a few groups, but really only actively participate in a few. Finding those groups among the list as it is today is nearly impossible. I can't figure out how they are currently sorted. It's not by discussion activity nor alphabetical by name...the two options on the web. It seems like it might be by the date if the latest photo upload.

While Flickr is about photos, the groups are more about the discussions. Either a 'sort by' option OR the option to label a group as a favorite which would then lock it to the top of the listing would make this new group experience great!
draconian scale [deleted] Posted 12 years ago
On the whole, I like it! Better than the app update Twitter just launched. Here are some plusses and minuses:

+ View of uploads by contacts
+ Sets/Groups/Favorites/Photos of/Contacts
+ Settings
+ Enhance

- Can't remove frames
- Some of the filters are over the top
- Applying edit changes is slow
- Adding filters can be slow
- Flip orientation doesn't seem to work on front-facing camera
emesmendo Posted 12 years ago
Sorry, but app is useless without the ability to download a full sized version of the picture. You are not retaining any users with this restriction.
Igor Klajo Posted 12 years ago
It's a huge improvement on the previous version. I use it on my iPad 3 and even zoomed in it's good looking. I'm sure the next step is gonna be to make it 100% iPad compatible.
Burnt Umber Posted 12 years ago
I am trying to figure out why, as a pro user, I am seeing a banner ad on the top of my photostream when I specifically paid money not to see such garbage. Certainly I paid for other reasons but an ad free experience is certainly a big plus.

Don't fool yourself, this is an advert. By placing the Iphone name it becomes a sales pich for their product. You did not roll out at the same time a Droid app or a Google app but just an Iphone app. It specifically targets one product.

You have the flick blog. You have the help forum. You have other venues to push pruducts. Don't spam the pro users with banner adds. It's lazy and shows a general poor attitude towards the millions of other users who don't have nor want an Iphone.

In the future perhaps you may offer alternatives to spam. We droid users prefer Canadian Bacon and a side of eggs.
heikowitte Posted 12 years ago
Great update! Now the only thing *really* missing is iPad support. Browsing photos is a lot more fun when sitting on the couch with an iPad.
timsackton Posted 12 years ago
Definitely an improvement on the old version. Looks beautiful.

One big minus, however, is that as far as I can tell there is no way to customize what is shown in the "Activity" screen. I would like to be able to see recent activity on just my photos. It would be nice if this could include replies to my comments (when people actually click "reply" to my comment on their photos) as well, but not every comment made after mine on other people's photos. Of course, this last point is a longstanding problem I have with Flickr's recent activity page that seriously stifles conversation, but that does not seem like it will ever get fixed.

I also second the need for some way to sort groups or mark some as favorites. But again, this is a longstanding serious problem with Flickr as a whole.
Woody Posted 12 years ago
Glad to see the update.

Any chance we will see automatic uploads similar to the Google+/Facebook app.

Thanks, and keep improving!
Thea Lamkin Posted 12 years ago
timsackton:

The activity feed in the app should reflect your site activity feed customizations you set here: www.flickr.com/activity/customized/
leesure Posted 12 years ago
Thea Lamkin:

Can you make the group feed do the same...that is, can it match your choice of either sorting them by discussion activity or alphabetically?
_Marcel_ Posted 12 years ago
Thank you so much! This is great news :-)
Just spent an hour or so with testing and I am really impressed.

Just one little bug that I found in the settings menu:
The upload size options for "high" and "mid" resolution seems to lead to the same results with 2448 x 3264 px. Wish there would be an option with even lover resolution (eg. 1200px wide).

move on - great stuff!
thanks again, cheers

Can you give some directions on how to save photos to the camera roll on the new version? I have the feature turned on from my settings.
J. David Buerk Posted 12 years ago
There needs to be a way in-app to invite a photo to a group. Currently you can only add your own photos to groups in-app. I'm an admin / moderator for several groups, so perhaps it would be good to add some group admin tools to the new app? Everything else looks stellar so far though!
Revise_D Posted 12 years ago
cubeacrosstheaisle:

That setting is for pictures being taken with your phone I believe. I am experiencing the same problem of not being able to download photos to my camera roll. I need this feature more than anything else. I would have not downloaded this version if I had know this. I am considering stopping my pro account if they do not add this feature or allow me to go back to the previous version. I fear this is some sort of attempt to stop people from sharing photo accounts.

Can you not upload video through the new app?

When I go to the camera and click the 'pictures' button, it only shows my pictures... no videos. Unless I'm missing some other way to upload things, it seems like uploading video through the new app is impossible. There's no mention of video uploads in the Help section. Only photos.

The new app is great in every other way, but remains mostly useless to me (less useful, in fact) if I can't upload the videos from my phone.
clairobskur Posted 12 years ago
i like the new app, but i need 2 things:
1) ipad support
2) ability to copy the short url from within the app
stackdakine Posted 12 years ago
cubeacrosstheaisle:

Hi, when you upload the photo(s) to Flickr, it will be automatically saved to your camera roll.
Revise_D Posted 12 years ago
stackdakine:

What about downloading photos that are already on Flickr?
cubeacrosstheaisle Posted 12 years ago
stackdakine:

in the previous app version, you could upload pictures to Flickr and then from the app, save them to your iPhone camera roll. It looks to me like that functionality has been removed.
If you take a picture using the camera function within the flickr app, it will upload to the flickr photostream and to your iPhone camera roll (if the setting is turned on).

So whats the deal with the download feature being removed?

LOVE IT.

Two quick things:

1. I wish I could use the volume button to take a photo. (I’m assuming Apple’s keeping that one to themselves (boo), but thought I’d ask.)
2. Might I suggest using machine tags when posting photos with a filter? “Chameleon” and “Panda” are, y’know, kind of awesome things in their own right. :D

More feedback when and if it pops up, but again: LOVE IT.
wheresrunnicles Posted 12 years ago
Generally very happy with the update - it massively improves the ability to browse and discover and it's good to finally be able to add someone as a contact from the app.

To be honest, I don't much care about filters and the like (I think that's best left to other apps).

A couple of problems:
-While sharing via twitter etc. is great but it would be useful to have the ability to copy the weblink instead of sharing directly.
-Also, I found the popup help messages really, really annoying.
-As mentioned above, removal of ability to save photos to camera roll is a pity.
erink02 Posted 12 years ago
Regarding groups...
I wish there was a way to search for groups (that you haven't yet joined) from the app

(Which would then make it possible to add a picture to said group.

but the app looks/functions wayyyy better than it did before, hooray!

Thanks!
zosterops Posted 12 years ago Edited by zosterops (member) 12 years ago
Looks great after a quick look, but soooooooooooo disappointed that there are no stats :-( I'm hoping they are just hidden and I haven't found them yet.
docpop Posted 12 years ago Edited by docpop (member) 12 years ago
Great job on the app. Seriously! Here are some notes.

1) Find friends needs a way to select/deselect all. With 400 contacts appearing in my list, it's a ton of work to go through just to add 10 more friends to my follow list.

2) In the photo editing options, vignette and tilt shift would be nice.

3) Currently I'm using FlickStackr for editing my sets and photos, it would be nice if the Flickr app was as nice for bulk editing, labeling, etc.

edit:

4) Automatically open Flickr App when clicking links from email, web, twitter. Especially handy for replying to Flickr mail.
erink02 Posted 12 years ago
zosterops:

you can see stats for individual pics when you open a pic and click the "i" info button on the right corner, if that helps?
Peter Camyre Posted 12 years ago
I dislike not having the ability to "save" pictures to camera roll.
I hope that changes, or I'll be done with flickr!
zosterops Posted 12 years ago
erink02:

Thank you, but I meant the stats where you can see which photos people have been viewing in a day. Good for obscure photostreams :-)
j l t Posted 12 years ago
What is the reason for not making this a universal app? Not all of us have iphones, some of us have ipads... Been waiting for a decent ipad app for years, and now you've got an ios app but it's not made for the ipad too. Disappointed.
rsmithing Posted 12 years ago
Is there no longer a batch or multiple upload, or am I just not seeing it? If gone, does anyone know any 3rd party apps that could handle this for mobile? That was one of the things I used most on the previous version.
BeccaG Posted 12 years ago
Loving the new app, but I have one very tiny niggle with it.

After uploading you can't add your image to groups and sets, you can only do it prior to upload (or have I missed something). It's no big deal as I tend to use a laptop or other computer for most of my flickr time anyway and I can do that then.
eMiLy @_@ Posted 12 years ago
rsmithing:

To upload multiple photos with the app, just tap on the photos you would like to upload to add them to the upload queue.
darnellclayton Posted 12 years ago
It would be great if I could upload videos through the app as well. Otherwise it's just another photo social network! (we have too many of those already!)

Help. Me. Find. A. Purpose. Here! ;-)
jakerome Posted 12 years ago
Would be really useful if when browsing photos, I could choose Friends & Family instead of just contacts. that's how I browse on Flickr. I have 1000+ contacts that I interact with rarely, and ~200 friends that I want to see regularly. An easy toggle, an extra option or even just following the account settings would be lovely.
tantek Posted 12 years ago
Truly amazing "update". Congrats to everyone on their hard work!

#1 feature request for the new year:

* multiple accounts/logins support please!

I post on my personal account and some shared community accounts too, and it would be great if I could easily toggle which account I was using.(e.g. take a look at how the Twitter iOS app supports this, it's easy to use and invaluable. And they supported multiaccounts even *before* Twitter iOS integration).

That would be amazing and I would likely post to such other accounts exclusively on Flickr if that were so (since IG also lacks multiple account support).

Plus, making it easier to post to multiple accounts may provide a bit more incentive to have multiple *pro* accounts, just saying. :)
Kevin Posted 12 years ago
Love it. Love it!

I would like to be able to upload a video as well. A shame that's not there yet.

Feedback or bug, you decide:

But when looking at the activity view, and you click the comments bar for a photo, it will take you to those comments. Good!

However, click the faves bar, and it has the same effect had you clicked the photo itself, it doesn't zero in on the fave list. I think it should.

eMiLy @_@:

YES! Thanks very much! I mentioned this in a blog post I just wrote:

Flickr to Instagram: It's ON!
ScottJ Posted 12 years ago
As I said in a thread which is now apparently closed, I am VERY disappointed that you've once again pretended that tablets don't exist or aren't important, and have yet again failed to make the iPhone app universal so that it's useful (at full resolution) on an iPad.

When I chose Flickr over another competing service and opened a pro account, it was because at the time Flickr seemed far ahead in terms of user interface and integration. Now that other service has a free, fully functional iPad app, and you've got this low-res one that's fine on an iPhone but can't make use of the photo-friendly retina display on an iPad.

Other developers -- even the developers of free games -- are taking advantage of the ability Apple offers of creating universal apps. I do not understand why it's taking Flickr so long to figure out that photographers and tablets go together like sushi and wasabi. Come ON, guys!
maggie1000 Posted 12 years ago
I love the new app! The only complaint I have is the same as described here: www.businessinsider.com/marissa-mayers-new-flickr-is-beau...

After you upload a photo, you're dumped back into the start screen without any positive feedback that the photo uploaded or where it went. At first the slightly paranoid side of me made me think I lost the photo somehow. Perhaps just going to your own photo stream or even into the upload queue would be better?
stackdakine Posted 12 years ago
BeccaG:

Hi, go into the photo screen of the already uploaded photo. Tap on the info button on the top right corner. Then, tap on Edit in the top right corner. Here you can add the photo to a group or set as well as much more.
cazphoto.co.uk Posted 12 years ago
Thea Lamkin:

That's an OK stop-gap - but you might want this custom view to be different for the main website and the iphone app. You need to be able to set this separately in the app.

Personally, I would like another button to be able to choose a view with comments on MY pictures OR a view with replies to my comments on OTHERS' pictures. That would be ideal.

I am also a +1 for being able to sort the groups view alphabetically. Sorting by most recent upload is just silly - you'll never know where to find anything.

Your search bar in the groups view disappears off the top of the screen when you scroll down the list - this is a pain. You may be quite a way down the list and realise you want to search for a group title, then you have to spend ages scrolling back up again to get the search bar back.

It is a great improvement over the last version (which I barely used), but still has a few niggles. If these were fixed, it would make it even better.
tantek Posted 12 years ago
maggie1000:

Agreed! Would love to see the start screen auto-updated with my just-uploaded photo at the top (yeah, I know, just like IG does it). That bit of acknowledgment/feedback has a very powerful emotional impact of "phew, it worked!". Without seeing your own photos in your overall stream of photos from friends etc., it feels like Flickr is ignoring you (sadface), which I know is not true, because I know I read somewhere that Flickr loves you. ;)
richardr Posted 12 years ago
It's a big improvement and it's nice to have access to nearly all site features from my mobile. My main question is whether there are any plans to enhance the mobile site?

I'd echo one of the earlier observations that the ordering of groups seems pretty arbitrary; it's only useful when the search is used as the list can't be scanned. Lastly, a photo showing in recent activity seems to show various things that had last happened to a photo as well as the most recent change; this actually makes it difficult to see what actually is the specific change that triggered it showing in the list.
mikkers! Posted 12 years ago
Is there a way to post linked "@ reply" to photos instead of just generally commenting?
Charles Lacz Posted 12 years ago
Yeah, some people outside the US would like to use it. When is it coming to other App stores across the world and why wasn't it there to begin with?
BeccaG Posted 12 years ago
Ahh, I had a feeling I was missing something. Thanks very much.
jakerome Posted 12 years ago
The camera with the blue background is very very distracting. I end up constantly thinking I'm in the camera part of the app.
Charles Lacz Posted 12 years ago
I love the giant banner on the web page that tells me to go download the new Flickr app that isn't available in my store. At least don't display it in the countries it's not offered in.
Nick Heer Posted 12 years ago
UI issues I've noticed:

1. The text colour when uploading a photo is incorrect (it's white — it should be a light grey).
1a. Taking over the status bar seems wrong to me, even if there's a precedent set by Twitter, Pocket, et. al.
2. The grey stroke around the Contacts/Groups buttons make the edge appear blurry.
3. The feed switching button in the top-right isn't quite square.
4. When viewing an info panel on the "back" of a photo, the flip back button is the back button in the upper-left, which is incongruent with the upper-right info button.
5. Tags need ~5pts padding.
6. The globe icon in the tab bar is slightly too small.
7. There's Flickr branding in the upper bar when viewing a photo. It's inconsistent with other apps, and incongruent with the iOS HIG.
8. There's a weird "stacking" animation when swiping through photos. It doesn't feel right.

Great update. Significantly better than Flickr 1.x, and really polished. Love it.
Steve Rhodes Posted 12 years ago
It is great flickr finally have the kind of iPhone app it should have had years ago, but as others have pointed out, by this point it should have also been released as an iPad app.

While you emphasize that photos are high res, the place where that could make the most difference is on the iPad's retina display.

An iPad app also needs to be able to batch upload photos easily.

I took a lot of photos with my RX-100 in LA and loaded them into my iPad. I've just been emailing them to upload to Flickr which isn't ideal.

I also need to be able to geotag them in places in LA (or at least put them on a map of LA) now that I'm back in San Francisco.

And yes, we need to be able to choose to not use a frame with a filter.
jakerome Posted 12 years ago
Has anyone asked for a "save originals" option yet? Please do.

I like to mess around with filters & processing & crops and stuff. But I will be reluctant to do so if it means I can't recover the original. Instead I'll use the camera app, then maybe roll over to Flickr.

If I could set it to "always save original" I'd happily replace the Camera app with the Flickr app.
jamesblah Posted 12 years ago
Nice app in general.

There needs to be an option for the 'activity' to just show activity on your own photos. Currently mine also shows activity on other people's photos I have commented on, which is a problem, because if 400 people comment on that same photo, all you see is activity on other peoples' pics when you want to see if there's been any activity on your photos.
RubyMae Posted 12 years ago
I must admit, I don't quite get the clamor for a dedicated iPad app. I have an iPad and frequently browse flickr on it but I just use the regular site via the browser with no issues. It works perfectly well. (i'll admit, however, i don't take photos with my iPad so don't have to deal with uploading to flickr from the iPad).
Carrie McGann Posted 12 years ago
So far, I love the app. A couple of things on my wish list would be to be able to invite a photo into a group and also to access Flickrmail via the app.

The notifications are a great feature. I'm liking the notifications for when there is a pending photo for one of my groups. It hasn't been notifying me 100% of the time, though.
falconn67 Posted 12 years ago
I already chose not to download Instagram. Why do I want this app? It's an improvement over the last app in the same way the Pontiac Aztec was an improvement over the Yugo.

I won't use this on my phone, and I'll still use my browser to get to the full site on my iPad.

Have you heard of iPads and other tablets? They are kinda popular.

shibuya246 Posted 12 years ago
Suggestion - since your API has been around for a long time and is well documented, why not make your iphone app code open source and let the community help you code it. You can still decide which parts to accept as pull requests on github and you will get things done a lot faster than your current way. The value of the asset is not in the code, it is in the user interaction. The more users sharing more photos means more money for flickr and yahoo. The code is not an asset you can sell. Get a community helping solve all the suggestions in this list and then choose yourself which features you are adding in. Flickr has a long way to go if it wants to catch up. Dont miss the chance
cjazzlee Posted 12 years ago
It's a terrific update - UI is good and ability to find/browse photos is terrific. However, when trying to edit a photo taken in-app, I think the app is very slow. Just cropping takes forever. Filters screening is not bad but the initial edit functions take a really long time, to the point that any enjoyment in the Flickr app experience is replaced by frustration and impatience.

I'm on an iPhone 4S with latest OS.
jakerome Posted 12 years ago
Being able to bookmark favorite spots-- in my particular case, group discussions-- would be really nifty.
Biker-Torben Posted 12 years ago
A huge improvement over the old app!

But - when you use the Search function and search for photos in your photostream it would be nice to have a sort order option - like date, interesting etc.
clichey Posted 12 years ago

Please.
delirious property [deleted] Posted 12 years ago
Shame it cannot be made to run on older iPod Touches. New app requires OS 4.3 and above. I've got a second gen iPod Touch and the latest OS on that is version 4.2.1

Now I know that certain features can only work on later OS, but as the older App worked on OS 4.2.1 couldn't the new APP work out what it is running on and enable certain features dependant on the OS?
mattrkeyworth Posted 12 years ago
The app is an improvement but where is the support for iPad? It's not enough to develop an app just for iPod and iPhone devices which in my opinion has taken already far too long to create a decent version of the app. iPad support is required as soon as possible. When will an ipad supported version be made available?

Add the ability to download my photos back. I take pics with my camera and eye-fi and want to edit and upload them or blog them or text them and you just broke that workflow. Also add the ability to download all sizes. You really could have learned a lot from FlickStackr. In the meantime back to FlickStackr which I think does everything you all are complaining about. It also has a great iPad version.

You aren't being subjected to ads, because what you are seeing is a promotional banner, not a paid advertisement. You might want to read this topic for some perspective:

www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157632229990607/

If you dismiss the banner, you won't see it again. Easy, and nothing to get worked up about.

PLEASE! I do NOT own an iPhone. I don't care about this app.

Why must I seea FORCED video on it EVERY time I hit the Flickr main page? (No, not "do you want to play this", just BLAM, starts playing.

Why do I have to see, EVERY SINGLE TIME, this page-wide banner about it on the home page, even once I click the close (X) on it?

Please Flickr... don't be like this. I'm sure you're excited, but some of us don't care, and don't need you to CONSTANTLY ram this in our faces over and over. Be a little more thoughtful, wouldja?

Oh, and I use an Android phone, the one that scares Apple half to death to where they keep suing the manufacturer. When you make an Android app, please don't force everyone to watch a video or stupid banner for that over and over either. Stop being so "facebook", ok?

Thanks.

It's pretty lame that the app adds the name of the filter as a visible tag (the machine tag is there, too). I have no need for the tag "wallaby" when there's not actually a wallaby in my photo.

(Other than that the app rocks!)
Trevor Coultart Posted 12 years ago
Huge improvement. Huge.

My only suggestion at the moment: need to be able to to sort the order of search results. On website I always display (regular) search results by "most recent" so I can see what's been uploaded since I last searched. Can't seem to do that with the App.
Chris Blakeley Posted 12 years ago
The good news is that I finally got the app to work.

The bad news is that I finally got the app to work. Ick.

For browsing, it's fine, but I don't browse much on my phone, I save that for when I'm at home. And I was less than pleased to find that there were notifications now and that each item had a on/off switch without a universal switch.

As for the camera, the filters and all that... I'm sorry but I already have three camera apps and an editing app on my phone as it is. I need another one like I need another hole in my head. And that I have this _instead of_ the ability to upload pictures I take with those other apps (Camera, Camera+ and Hipstamatic) with the Flickr app?

Pass. I've deleted the app and it'll stay off because these new features aren't worth the hassle.
jakerome Posted 12 years ago
Chris

I can still upload other iphone photos with the new Flickr app. From the camera panel, click the stack of rectangles on the lower left and you'll have access to your whole camera roll.
tedd4u Posted 12 years ago
jakerome:

There are also two shortcuts to this from the tab bar at the bottom of the app. You can do either of the following to go straight to your camera roll to select photos to upload:

• Double-tab the blue camera tab
• Tap and hold the blue camera tab

Hope that's helpful!
blakley Posted 12 years ago
I'm in the camp that thinks this is a huge step forward.

I'd like to see a few things, some of which have already been mentioned and some of which haven't.

1. Download photos to camera roll. Duh.
2. Grab the URL and Grab the HTML/BBCode from the individual photo view. Without this, it's essentially impossible to insert a photo into a post in a group thread - which lots of group users do all the time.
3. "Pin" favorite groups to the top of the group list
4. Alphabetical selection on the right-hand side of the Groups and Contacts views - as in the iPhone address book.
5. Volume button as shutter button.

But this is not a whine. What you've done with the app is very fine work.

Please, I do not want a banner on iPhone app on my Flickr main page, and when I try to close it, it opens the app on my iPad.

Is the new app supposed to be also for iPads or only vertical small devices? I can not understand how to use it horizontally, and with better keyboard. Still can not send a message as the drop down menus do not work on iPad. I can not costumize appearance. Not easy to understand use.

But fast add to groups, sets and fast add tags!

Liking the app so far. One issue i do have is that the app is served as the default mobile version. So clicking on a Flickr link from Twitter or webpage takes me to a screen telling me to download the app. So I never get to see the picture.

You might want to post that in the bug thread.

I'd like to be able to double tap widgets on the top of a "page" to get to the top w/o going through the thumb-scroll exercise.

For instance, I scroll far down in a photostream or the explore widget, there's no quick trip back to the top option.

Agreed.

RachelC: There is a small X-button in the top right corner of the app promo-screen on the mobile Flickr website. Just tap that one and the promo should go away.
