Kelsey Creates PRO 6:50am, 7 December 2011
Hey folks!

Story:
-----------------------------------------
So very sorry for the delay, especially in the busy holiday season, but our church was moving its office this last week, so email response times went way up. I now have a recipient. This woman lost her husband and lives with four children (can you imagine four children all by yourself?) The holidays are particularly hard for her, so hopefully we can bring her a little cheer in the new year.

Design:
-----------------------------------------
The quilt I've designed is a fusion of this quilt:

Prism by Fresh Lemons : Faith

and Elizabeth Hartman's new wave quilt:

Here is what I mocked up for what the final quilt should look like:

From each person I will need two blocks that look like this:

do. Good Stitches, FAITH, December 2011, Block Design by Kelsey Creates

Colors:
-----------------------------------------
- The middle strip needs to be white white, not off white. This should be a solid, not a print.
- Please use light to mid grays for the strip on each side of the white. Please try to use a variety in your blocks. This should be a solid, not a print.
- The colored bits should be rainbow colors, plus pink. These should be bright, not dusky or pastel. These can be all prints, or a mix of solids and prints. Going for scrappy in this part. Here is a good example of the color scheme (blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple):

Block Construction:
-----------------------------------------
Each block measures 15" finished, aka 15.5" including the seam allowance.

They are each formed from 4 paper-pieced sub-units. Each sub-unit measures 7.5" finished, aka 8" with a seam allowance. Two like this:

do. Good Stitches, FAITH, December 2011, Block sub-unit design by Kelsey Creates

and two mirror images of the first, like this:

do. Good Stitches, FAITH, December 2011, Block sub-unit design, mirrored by Kelsey Creates

So for 2 blocks, you will make a total of 8 sub-units. To help compensate for the fact we are all using different fabrics, I am going to ask that you do not join the mini blocks into the final blocks so that I can mix them all up and distribute the different fabrics more evenly. If you forget and join them, no big deal. :)

Here are the links to the paper-piecing templates. Please make sure to print without scaling and measure the print out before you start to make sure that it is 8" across including the seam allowance. You will need to print a total of four copies of each pdf:

dl.dropbox.com/u/10064542/Upper_right_and_lower_left_with...

I'd recommend not trimming them down before sending to avoid fraying, just measure the blocks to make sure they came out to 8" including the seam allowance.

If you need a refresher on paper piecing, I recommend you check here: artisania.wordpress.com/tutorials/

Hope that is clear. :)

Glad to see this up today so I can 'fit it in'. ;-)
My first try printed out 7 1/2, so will be working on figuring that out.
Thanks much, Kelsey - this will be a beautiful quilt!

This looks lovely, Kelsey. I'll be hunting down some solid gray fabrics. We just got a Hobby Lobby and it has a huge selection of Kona, so I'll start there. Hope this will bring some special joy to this mom.
Kelsey Creates PRO 7 years ago
I printed it on mine just to make sure it works. Usually there is an option to Shrink to fit to pafe area that is selected by default that needs turned off. You also might need to make sure the margins are no larger than 0.25".

Thanks so much! ^_^

'shrink to fit' was off, but I'll try adjusting the margins - thanks.

Kelsey, Just because I'm new I just wanted to verify with you when these are due? by the end of the month?
Kelsey Creates PRO 7 years ago
Great!

Yup, you need to sew them, post a picture of them in this group, and mail them by Dec. 31. :)

Thank you! :)

Kelsey, which Kona grays do you consider light to mid gray?
Kelsey Creates PRO 7 years ago
*fetches her Kona card*

Ash, med grey, slate, and coal all fall into the grey range I was thinking, but not charcoal or pepper, they are too dark.

Of course, no one needs to use Kona specifically, so all should feel free to use colors from other brands in that range. :)

Thank you - I would not have otherwise used slate, but it's in my stash so that helps a lot.

Is it weird to say that I feel like paper piecing? Cause I do. Thanks for the project!
Kelsey Creates PRO 7 years ago
Not weird to me, I love paper piecing. :)

Also, one suggestion to those who haven't started and aren't that familiar with paper piecing: it is easier to remove the paper at the end if you use thinner paper. I like to rip a piece of paper out of a notebook that is thinner than typical printer paper and just put that in my printer. It also helps to use a slightly smaller than usual stitch length.
taffyjane-Des 7 years ago
When using thicker paper, I will spritz the back (the paper) and let it sit for a second or two and then it just breaks apart so easily on the seam line.
stitchsister 7 years ago
Thanks for the tips. I have not tackled these blocks yet, and I have never tried paper piecing. I'm a little nervous about digging in.

Thanks for the tip about trying notebook paper! :-)
~Me1issa 7 years ago
- you'll do fine. :) Just take it slow, and make sure you've got enough fabric to cover the ends after it's folded.
My greatest challenge is getting my stupid printer to work!! Grrrrr...
~Me1issa 7 years ago
Yay! I finished mine last night! I will probably have to wait till Saturday or Monday to mail, though, as Mother Nature decided to pile snow on our heads today. :)
Jennspen 7 years ago
So I finished one subunit last night and it wasn't nearly as scaring as I thought! :) I'll finish the rest up while I'm off for Christmas break.
~Me1issa 7 years ago
, Taffyjane-Des suggested spritzing the paper before you start to peel it off -- that was BRILLIANT! That worked better than anything I've ever done before when it comes to paper piecing.
Good luck!
