Ok, since meetings are being thrown around I'll formally ask if enough people (say at least 5) want to physically meet and hash out what was talked about here? And actually vote on the future one way or the other.

Next Thursday evening? Number of interested dictates venue.

If you're coming, bring ideas. I would suggest that further comments here are valuable, and influential but you must be present to have a vote.

in exploring the goal/s / purposed of DPG?

I realize this may be a can of worms, but I'll throw it out and see what happens.

What do you want from the group?

To me, it seems like right now it is mainly a flickr group with a few meatspace benefits. And if that's what people like then there's nothing wrong with that per sey.

I will say that after being dormant for so long and then popping back in... it seems almost exactly the same, or even perhaps even less organized.

My opinion, and it is just my opinion, is that we need to either disband the formal part (we do have "officers"), or we need to reevaluate and decide what we want to do, perhaps elect new officers on a regular basis (people that have specific goals), solicit some minor funds, grow beyond flickr + fun boozy meetings.

Please note, I say this as someone who has found those meetings as a lot of fun, and there is no reason that part can not continue if we do decide to do something different as well.

Personally, I wish there was a happy medium between what we have now, and what I understand the other local photographer's group to be.

If we decide to disband formally, which I think would be something we should do face to face at a meeting, there are a few loose ends to tie up.

I know Brian/HBR Studios has been trying to create an entirely new type of facility for photographers, and it sounds exciting. Right now, as I understand it, he wants X number of supporters to be able to pledge $30 a month in order to make this happen. I, most unfortunately am unable to personally offer that as I live right on the edge of financial stability. I most certainly can offer personal time each month if needed, but I realize that is not what he needs right now. If you find yourself in a position that $30 a month is worthwhile to give for Brian's goal (which sounds fantastic) talk to him, find out what he wants to do, let him know specifically..
I'm glad that you brought this up, Edge, because it's something that I've been thinking about for awhile. The meetings are fun and I like going and seeing everyone, but I personally would like for us to be doing more. Admittedly, I was not attending meetings regularly for quite awhile and am trying to get back in the game (and have been), and was not doing much to organize anything beyond meetings. There have been a few organized photo ops outside of the meetings, such as a big Depot shoot a few weeks ago. I know that Justin has committed (I think) to organizing a strobist meet once every 3ish months, which is awesome.

I think that as a group there is so much more that we could be doing, but also realize that people's lives are busy and that makes things difficult at times. I do think it would be great to elect officers once a year or something, and have the officers be committed to coming to every meeting, give or take one or two. Having new officers every year, I think, would keep things fresh and potentially help to keep new ideas coming in. And having our officers at every meeting would definitely help to give our meetings some direction, which we are sorely lacking lately.

I'd love to be a part of bringing some new direction to the group if others are interested in doing so!

I for one, welcome our new alien overlords.

In all seriousness though, I agree that the DPG could do with a bit more structure. I'm inclined to discuss this in "meatspace" rather than here, as I think that misinterpretation of the written word tends to be an issue. Perhaps a meeting should be set up (even the July monthly meeting) where we'll discuss all number of Serious Guild Issues? Maybe also a Flickr mail should be sent out to group members to keep them apprised of the situation?
Some of this will sound negative, but it is the truth.

It is extremely tough to get a good amount of people together in the Summer months. This group almost always lays dormant due to busy schedules. Maybe that could change? Maybe not?

As far as more structure goes, I am for that if it includes more instructional/informational meetups/seminars/workshops/shows.
I am against if it is just for the sole purpose of becoming a camera club. If I wanted to be a member of a camera club, I would join the DSCC. Part of the appeal of the DPG is it's freeness.

The whole President, vice and secretary deal was a FAIL in my opinion. The President doesn't attend meetings unless there is an agenda he wants covered, does anyone know who the vice and secretary are? We have an account that is losing money due to monthly fees last time I heard.
It is a good idea in concept, but it needs to be followed up regularly to work. No, I am not willing to do that as I would rather see the group as a public group again, not a business. that's not to say having officers and some sort of fund is a bad idea, it just need to be followed up on.

One more thing, this group is comprised of semi-eccentrics with a little bit of ADD. Getting us to actually be still and listen during a meeting is almost impossible because on a good day, 3/4 are there for the camaraderie and drinks and 1/4 are there to learn something.

I am up for change, but how much, I am unsure.

I too would like to see more come of the group, however, this is a topic that seems to pop up every couple of months and nothing ever comes of it.

The one big reason why I have stopped attending the meetings is mentioned above: DPG meetings lack information. As great as it is to see everyone, I'm one of the 1/4 that wants to get something out of it. Why hang out for a couple hours while X flashes a strobe in Y's face when I could be out shooting?

I don't mean to be negative, and I mean no disrespect to anyone in the group, but that's the question I have to ask myself every month....

Shawn, I don't think that came across as too negative. Indeed, agree or disagree, it is what I want people to speak up and say. I think much of what you are saying has a lot of merit.

I agree with brgthomas, that most of this should be covered face to face rather than just online, because, as he says it is too easy to misinterpret meanings. If/when we do this in meat space for that specific time I also think we'd need a moderator (which I could do if people are not too opposed)

Thanks for the reinforcement Shana, I greatly appreciate it.

Nate, I hear exactly what you are saying, getting back to one of the original questions could you enumerate what kind of education/instructions you are looking for specifically? (in other words what do you want out of the group?)

As to "officers" to be honest if we continue in that format what I was thinking was not only regular elections, but to stand for office (especially president) one should have specific goals for the term.
There is a fantastic social aspect to the group which I absolutely don't want to see disappear, but if there are even 6 people who are willing to provide a little extra time for planning and organizing each month I don't see why we can't have both. And absolutely, this should not turn into another camera club/DSCC. They fulfill a specific role that we cannot, and should not try and duplicate.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Please, I want to hear more... and as always keep it civil especially since we are reliant on mere text to infer one another's meaning.

I'll have more to say once I'm at a computer. Way to much to put out there via iPhone. But for now, I'll say my thoughts pretty much follow Shawn's.
The biggest problem is who's going to want to hold office?
I've also tried to set up little mini workshops during meetings, but very few pay attention and who ever was teaching gives up. So i gave up setting things like that up.

Literally anything, I'm opening to hearing about anything whether it be technique, business, gear, etc. But like Justin said it just seems to be a big room of distraction...

okay, i've been dormant and lurking for over a year now i know but this discussion is bringing me out.

i guess for awhile i was considered by some the "unofficial-how-did-you-end-up-in-this-role" secretary and i tried to "organize" things a bit more but gave up as i got the impression that most people in this group didn't like the structure i was trying to establish. which is fine.

however, if now people want a little more "structure" i'd love to help in developing that whatever form it may be. i joined this group originally to learn as i know very little and would love to see this group progress into a social group/club/whatever that's more recognized by the general public. :)
I think we are all interested in more structure. I do agree and think that finding people who will lead will be difficult. I admit that I have fallen off for many reasons but mainly it's due to lack of time and it is hard to please everyone with projects and ideas. Edgewood... would or should we schedule a gathering based on ironing this out? I will happily attend. My best nights are Thursday nights.

Yeah, Moe, I think that's a good idea, perhaps near the end of the month (24th-ish) Thurs, or any other night should be fine with me given enough lead time.

I'd be up for meeting. As of now I am available next Thursday.

N/M. I just remembered that I am going out of town on Thursday. I need to put a calendar in front of my computer screen, I always forget where I am supposed to be and when!
