The forecast for Aurora Strength is currently 7/10. If the skies are clear and you have patience, the odds are very good you will see the show if you get far enough out of town and away from light pollution.

www.auroraforecast.com/

Oh, any time the forecast is 4/10 or higher the chances are good anything 5/10 the chances of seeing them get really good.

Oh and look North.

Some tips:

A great starting point for Aurora Photography
1. Set your lens to the widest aperture (lowest number i.e. 2.8 or 1.4) the wider the better.
2. set your ISO to 800 (1600 if your camera can handle the noise, most older cameras cannot)
3. Turn the dial to Bulb Mode
4. Hook up a shutter release to the camera.
5. Set the focus on your lens to infinity.
6. Click and lock the shutter release in for 25 seconds and release it.
Anything longer than 25-30 seconds will make the stars look like blobs instead of sharp stars do to the earth turning.

That is pretty much it.

So number 6. is correct in saying 25 seconds?

Looks pretty overcast : /
admin
Yup, Seconds.
I fixed it now, thanks Nate.

that is why you want to shoot high ISO and as wide of an aperture as you can, so you pull in as much light as possible in that short exposure.

With film, we got great results using 400 iso, though I haven't been able to get out with a digital for auroras (in like the past 8 years!)

Shawn, have you tried 400?

Yeah, I couldn't get much with 400 in the 25-30 second range.

Hmmm, I bet the D700 would be KILLER for this, ISO26000 or so.

I finally do have it -- I hope I can get to try it out on auroras. Where will you be going?
admin
Nice thanks......

If I go and looking at the sky, it isn't looking promising, I was thinking of heading to Two Harbors.

On another note, I bet IS0400 and a F/1.4 lens would work well. I couldn't get enough light with 400 and 2.8 though.

Looks like the rain is putting a bit of a damper on this.

Shows an activity level of 7 today. There is a decent chance you will see Auroras tonight, especially if you get away from the city.

I'll go out somewhere tonight. Willing to carpool to pretty much anywhere on the north shore. Anyone have any cool spots in mind?

Clarification: I have a car that people can ride in.

How many miles before Duluth light won't pollute these shots?
admin
If you get out of your car and can barely see in front of your face and can see stars on the horizon, it is safe to say you are far enough out.

Ok. I'm thinking of going a little later tonight. The lake Shawn speaks of is up near two harbors. Anyone want a ride?
Shawn, I may call and ask for directions again, is that cool?
admin
Direction asking is cool if prior to 9:00, I will be in bed trying to shake this cold.

FYI, the aurora forecast is back down to level 4, probably a chance, but definitely not even close to as good.

Ok then, I'm not going to go then.

Well, darn.

For future reference, for the next good aurora forecast I'd like to go out with whoever goes, so email me if I don't post here, please. I don't check here everyday, so I tend to miss stuff. Thanks!
