This is open to anyone who is interested in learning some tips and tricks for landscape photography.

I am not a technical person, meaning I am not going to teach you the Zone system and how to spot meter the scene to get your exposure.

I shoot in AV mode (Aperture priority), using Evaluative metering 99% of the time and use EV (Exposure Value) compensation to dial in my exposures. For me, it is quick and easy and gets me the results I need.
If you just read that and said What the Fark is he talking about, that is okay, it is easier to comprehend than it sounds.

If you want technical help, this may not be for you.

I will have my filters on hand which will be available for everyone to use. I will also show you how to use filters, why you want and don't want to use filters and so on.

Some things to go over:
1. Subject matter - finding something interesting to use as the main focal point.
2. Composition - where are the best leading lines that will bring the viewer into and through the image? How can you shoot the scene in a way the average person would not see it? etc...
3. Light - Good light is key to a good landscape image. When does the best light occur?
4. Exposing to the right - What is this? What does it do? Why is it important?
5. ISO, Aperture and shutter speed

So, if you are interested post your response here, we will meet at Brighton Beach at 6:30a.m. Sunday morning 10-26-08. This will give us some time to cover some basics before sun comes up at around 7:30.

EDIT - Tripod, please bring one. If you don't have one, borrow one. I have two and they are available for whoever needs one. I have two Quick release plates for my Bogen meaning 2 people can share one tripod.

Interesting. I will probably bring the 4x5 out for this one.

Shawn, do you happen to have a spot meter?

Jason

My camera and pretty much any digital SLR can spot meter and i won't be shooting.

*****I added a couple things to the bottom of the list. please read them.

"My camera and pretty much any digital SLR can spot meter and i won't be shooting."

Cool. And I surmise from above that your digimathing can be configured to spit out EV values?

Jason
admin
I don't know about that? It will allow you to dial it in to the proper exposure based on where you are spot metering from.
Is that what you mean?

Interesting. I will probably bring the 4x5 out for this one.

Don't forget to use that front tilt. Horrendusly powerful feature for landscapes. I personaly dislike shooting landscapes with any camera that doesn't have that feature.

If its cold out make sure to fire the shutter a few times to verify that it is behaving. It likes to have seizures sometimes if ts too cold.

I haven't had a lot of luck with front tilt, yet. I end getting a little blur at the top a ot of times.. I think that means I'm overdoing it.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't even think of that.

UPDATES

1. If you wake up and it is raining, stay home, I will not be there.

2. Really try to be there right at 6:30, I would like to start discussing some things to hopefully get some things fresh in your head for when the sun starts coming up.

3. Brushing up on where your Aperture, ISO and EV (Exposure Compensation) controls are on your camera is a huge bonus for me as I am not familiar with Canon, Olympus, Nikon, Sony, etc........ I am sure we will be able to figure it out if you are unsure.

Well, I might show up even if Shawn doesn't. Not that that would be useful to anyone (unless you're looking for company @ 6:30 AM) because I don't know my head from my ass when it comes to landscapes. By gum, I'm making 6 landscape exposures on Sunday morning even if there is an unexpected typhoon!

To be sure, I'll be making a garbage bag rain cover for the 4x5 tonight.

:-)

It's cool. Shawn was just so worried about where you were that he slipped and fell and whacked his head on a rock. We panicked, because we didn't know what the authorities would say, and buried his body out in the woods. Thankfully, I recently updated my passport, and I have a fresh plane ticket to Venezuela where I plan to live out the rest of my days.

But it's cool that you couldn't make it.

No problem Pete, it Turns out I wasn't dead, just a severe concussion. Digging myself out of the shallow grave wasn't all that easy.
I hope you got the rest you needed.....

Thanks to Matt, Laramie, Randizzle and Jason for showing up. And thanks to the rain for waiting to dump until about 8:00 or so.

Perhaps Saturday morning could be the redo? Theoretically there's going to be some good northern lights Halloween night... If it's clear, one might be able to catch the tail end. Of course, it might be better to move the locale then as well... Thoughts?

My images were a bust. Mostly to do with my non-existent tray development skills for 4x5 film. I really need to invest in 4x5 tank.
