Because of the recent posts with questions about lens sharpness and printing techniques, why don't we get together to answer some of these questions.

Next week? Wed evening? Bring your lens to be tested? I have a laptop and projector to compare the lens tests right on the spot.

Any takers?

Will I be able to test my film lenses, or does it have to be attached to a DSLR?

Jason, if it can be attached to a DSLR, that would be quicker and easier, but we can still make a print of the sharpest lens test and compare it to a print made from your lens, if you are so inclined.

Where? IDK -- any suggestions? My house is not ready yet. Chester Creek Cafe has their basement room all ready with a screen and everything, but someone would have to call to see if it is available.

Does anyone have a screw-mount adapter to mount M42 lenses on their DSLR?

Could the methodology behind what's gonna be going down be fleshed out a little more?

Bring your lenses (and camera) that you want to have tested, and I will bring the rest (ie: lighting, printed test pattern, tripod, laptop w/ photoshop, LCD projector, screen.)

It won't be the perfect scientific test, but it will be a good "operating" test of this.

I will also bring the shen-hao and do a test or two of the same pattern using my lenses just for giggles. We will have to wait for the prints to compare for the final judgement on these. Hmmmm, maybe even comparing negative film to transparency film???

Plus, a little bit about what it takes to get the best print off of that digital file.

Beaners has a screen downstairs, but Weds is open mic night.

Jason,
I ordered a M42 to K mount adapter yesterday for the new to me, old to the world Takumar Fisheye I picked up yesterday. I am sure it could be used for this test.
admin
Hambone Lewinski 10 years ago
Is that the f/11 Takumar fisheye, or the f/4 Takumar fisheye? I'm not a fan of the fisheye effect, but I am a fan of 17mm. And there's always the fisheye-effect correcting power of photoshop. I'm actually more interested in the f/11 because of its thinner-than-a-pancake form factor.

Thanks Shawn.

it is F/4

a 17mm fisheye becomes a 25.5 on a Pentax Digital, so nearly all the effect is lost, but it becomes a wide prime with a bit of distortion.

it will be nice for my ME Super.

I have a large screen and supports for it as well, so having a screen already at the place is just a bonus.

Hmmm........ so far no idea on a location. I, honestly, am out of ideas! Would it be better to hold off this meeting at this point?

Why wouldn't Beaners Upstairs room work?
the table is huge and you could setup your screen there.
Just a thought....

Option 1) Beaner's Upstairs.
Option 2) Push a bunch of my crap out of the way, and host it at my house. I don't have a screen, but I would help with the gear transport.

If you are interested in Option 2, I cannot offer this until next week, or later... (someone needs to file taxes prior to the Oct 15 free money giveaway deadline...)

No offence to Rich, but Beaner's will work just fine as far as space goes. Do we really need the screen, since it is 7 feet wide? Or can we just work off of the laptop screen? Can you tell that I am too dang lazy to haul that around???

I will call Beaner's and see if the room is available. Let's say 7:00.
admin
HBRstudios 10 years ago
Say, on second thought, can we make it 6:00, that way we hopefully will be wrapping things up by the time open mic starts.
admin
HBRstudios 10 years ago
Crap -- open mic starts at 7:00 -- will that be too much of a distraction for us??? I won't call until I get some feedback.

I did go ahead and call Beaner's and the upper room is availalble, though I did not reserve it yet. The only projection screen they have is on the main stage area. I can bring mine, though it is a bit to haul. I just hope that we can maneuver it up the stairs and through that door.

Yes, let's go with tomorrow night (Wed, 10/15) at Beaner's upstairs, 6:00 and we will just have to deal with open mic night. Oh, well.

Here is my list of attendees:

Rich, Justin, Me, Nate?, Matt?, Shawn?, Jason?

Others?
