Hey guys,

I think it would be awesome if we collaborated all the pics taken by our group at the bookstore and have a show.

I'll work on finding a location. Laramie and I have a show at Luce in August, he may perhaps be talked into letting this be a group show. If not I still have some contacts with other venues.

Let me know if you're down so we can start to get a list of photogs.

"I'm down."

To be contrary to Kip, I'm up for it. Maybe I should come by for more photos, then.

Sweet! I still gotta get a hold of Laramie and/or find a place to have the show. I'm thinking August.

ps: Sunday! 2pm!! Bookstore!!!
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
So here is my latest thought. Let me know what you guys think.

We use the window of the bookstore to display the photos. Molina suggested that we try to get a permit, so we can block the sidewalk off and have someone play music.

I like this idea a lot. Taking the images out of where they were made seems disjunct. Nobody will get them at Pizza Luce, it will just look like a crazy building. If we put them in the window of the bookstore, everyone walking by that loves the bookstore or driving by will get a perspective on the building and its contents.

I know roll printing is expensive, but so is framing.

Just a thought, let me know.

I think it is a fantastic Idea. Unfortunately I don't see an open Sunday for a couple weeks. When is the deadline?

What is Roll Printing?

I've already been planing on reusing some large frames to hold 16x20 prints that I need to order for a different show on this. :D

If we can work out getting the stuff printed, I am all for it. Unfortunately, to fill the space (even at the low First Photo price of $6/square ft.) it could be up to $4000 to cover the windows.

Any other printing options for us?

By the way, Kip, I see no reason why some of the artwork displayed could not be in frames as well.

I'm just waiting to see what we do before I print I guess.
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
I guess it can be framed or done however. As long as we can display it in the window looking out onto the street. I'm not really sure how this will work but I'm guessing it will involve a lot of wire. We could maybe build a very cheap and simple wood frame to go into the window and then we can hang our pics from that.

I talked to the owner and he sounded excited for this prospect. The only problem is, if the building sells, we'll have to take our stuff down within a week.

I'm guessing that we'll hold the show in early August. Does anyone know who to talk to about getting a permit to hold something on the street?

If you can't make a Sunday, I could arrange something on a one to one basis.

There has to be some sort of debris in that place that could be placed behind the window that a framed pohto can be hung from. Would help keep the mood too I'd sa if it was done with a rough feeling..
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
Great idea, I'll see what I can find in there. We should be able to find a way to make this work.

I also have a door I need to get rid of. If we want to go with the junk as mounting motif, I can donate it. Defintly can fit a few ptints onto a propped up door.
admin
As much ad I like the idea about having the show in the windows I also think it should be in a place where we could really have an opening of sorts. Also sun damage to the prints in the window is bound to happen. ? Just a thought. How about we have the show at a fire hall. call the fire chief up and see if he or she is game?

I would cheerfully attach my images to the windows with duct tape. I hate frames.

"I also think it should be in a place where we could really have an opening of sorts."

On the street in front of Carlson Books would be a BRILLIANT place to have a show opening. Carlson Books is an icon of the East Superior Street "culture". We would have to get some sort of permit, I bet, and it would be a real hassle to serve drinks, so that would be out.

I booked the show at Domincs Tattoo shop across the street from the bookstore. It's on the corner of 2nd ave west and superior, in the Old City Hall. I have yet to book an actual date but this will happen soon. I'm talking with the owner. This spot is perfect and offers a lot of wall space.

Does anyone know how or if we need to get some sort of permit to have booze at the show? The owner is looking into it but I thought I might ask.

Mid August it should happen.

Im thinkin about wanting to go again Sunday?
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
I may not be able to make Sunday, unless we do it earlier in the day, say 10am. I know this is early but I'm moving some of my stuff back home. How does Saturday work from 10-3?
admin
aReasontoHope 10 years ago
Well I work at 12:30, so that would be ok i suppose... can I take stuff???
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
Well, Bud and Heather should be there, all records downstairs are half off and the ones upstairs are one dollar. Books and Mags are cheap as shit. I'm sure Bud and/or Heather will be down there.

12:30 works, I'll be there earlier if anyone wants to get some time in there.

I would also be willing to bring people down there are night. You can get some sick long exposures.

Just let me know at iamthehighplainsdrifter@yahoo.com if it's the day of. Or respond to this thread and we'll work it out.
admin
aReasontoHope 10 years ago
Ok, so you're confusing me. You'll be there before 12:30? Because I WORK at 12:30.
admin
Sweet, I think I can make it to this finally!
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
Sorry, Ya, I can be there at 10am on Saturday!

Change of plans, Ill be there around 10 or shortly there after, pending no ghetto crap goes down at work this morning.
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
OK, I just got up and I'm going to get down there around 1030.

The date for the show is Friday, August 15th at Dominic's Tattoo Shop across from the Casino in Old City Hall. The opening reception is from 8-10pm. We will be hanging the show the night before, I've yet to hear what time we will be able to hang it but I'm guessing after 9pm. I talked the owner into purchasing a Frame Hanging system. So, we will not need to hammer into the walls. But, this also means that all framed worked needs to have a wire on the back.

I'm thinking 3-5 pictures each, unless you plan on printing just one big one. If I could get a head count again with how many pieces you expect to hang. That would be awesome.

Anyone have ideas for snacks and or drinks? I'm meeting with the owner of the shop and I think he may throw down some cash for a keg or something. But I'm not sure yet.

So we need to have these framed, right??
admin
N. Lindstrom Photo 10 years ago
Also, do you want me to take care of the adverts for Papa's or are you coming up with something?
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
Yes, they need to be framed. I was going to say that they didn't but I met with the owner today and he is throwing down a couple of grand for the hanging equipment and lighting. So, I would like to have some very professional art for their first show.

I would suggest bringing business cards and I'll introduce you to the guy that will be running the art shows there from now on. This is a sweet new art venue and they will be looking for artists to fill up the coming months.

As for pictures, I'm in.

And if anyone can keep their eyes open for some square mats and square frames, that would be super. I've got shots from my TLR that I'd like to use. The shots I have are 4x4. There's no luck in looking in Grand Marais for any.

I'll try my best to order some prints on time.
Money is tight these days.
MF Charlie Chan 10 years ago
I'm getting the order ready for the art hanging stuff. If someone doesn't want to frame, I could order a few foam core holders. That way you could save some money on frames. Let me know soon.

I am in.

So, how big is big? I only have four potentials, and I'd like at least one to be a big-ass space taker.
