PDD Banner Drive

As you may or may not know, I'm the administrator of Perfect Duluth Day, a community blog you may or may not read.

Anyway, the top of PDD has a banner that changes every time you visit, and all of the banners were made by PDD members. I think it's one of the coolest things about the site.

The thing is, those banners have been there for awhile and they're getting kind of stale. People add new ones now and then but it would be kind of nice to start fresh. This is where you come in (if you want to).

I'm looking for donations of your photos for PDD banners. The photos should be local in topic. They can include, well, pretty much any of the subjects that you guys post here regularly.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Crop your photo to 698px by 221px.
2. Layer www.perfectduluthday.com/pddbannertemplate.psd over it.
3. Save it for the web. (This is a banner for a site that gets a lot of hits. Please try to keep the file size as small as possible. Oh, yeah...jpg, gif, or png only please.)
4. Get it to me somehow. If you are a PDD member, you can upload it to the new directory, /headers08/ If you're not a member, you could email it to me at bchase@gmail.com, or you could just post it under this thread.

Thanks everyone. As soon as we get a good number of new banners, I'll switch the directory over.

I should also mention that there's no limit to the number of the banners you can submit. In fact there are no rules at all except for one: Don't alter the logo. You can place the logo whereever you want in the banner, you can put a shadow or a flare behind it, whatever. Just don't alter the logo.

I can't give you the specifics because I'm not at a machine with photoshop, but there is a window for managing layers. I believe you can create a new transparent layer and then add opaque content (i.e. copy and paste the logo in). Alternatively, if the PDD psd has a transparent background, you should be able to "copy" the PDD image and "paste as new layer" over your banner.

My disclaimer is that I only use photoshop when I have to -- i.e. to convert to CMYK. Typically I use the Gimp.

Yes, the PDD template has a transparent background. Just copy it and paste it on top of your image. (Or copy your image and paste it underneath the logo.)

open your picture, crop it to the size asked for, then open the logo file. Make it where you can see both files at the same time. Use your select tool and click on the logo and drag it above your file and drop it. Then its there. Just drag it around to where you want it, save as and you are done.

Can we self promote by imprinting our website URL in small text on each image?

Barrett is a group administrator Barrett says:

I would rather that you didn't. I think that kind of thing looks really tacky. Think of it as sort of a small donation of your art, not a tool for self-promotion.

When we get the new Flickr page for banners up, however, you can promote yourself all you want underneath your photo there. In fact, please do. People like knowing who took what photo.

i agree with barrett. the shameless self-promotion should go as a footnote along with the image on the FLICKR site... not on the image.

it is *my* impression that PDD belongs to the community... and is not owned by anyone... and to label it... on the banner image... well... is sort of like "burger king" doing a placement ad in your favorite film... except in THAT scene where "burger king" has ruined it... don't you agree edge?

I have a photo or two that I would love to contribute, but I'm photoshop dumb and can't figure out how to do this. I was able to c/p the logo over my image, but it won't paste with a transparent back round. If I figure it out I will email the image to your, Barret.

is there a flickr group for banners? - I'm digging some of the pictures. I really like the aspect ratio of the pictures as it forces a different look at the composition. Thanks for this opportunity Barrett.

And what Rich said about promotion, too.

the PDD flickr banner site is in a semi-dead state just now... we are cooking up the process that will bring it back to life...

so... add this thing as a contact...

www.flickr.com/photos/perfectduluthday/

and when it is brought back to life... you can see all the new freshness that the banners have become...

I'm totally on it!

And I must say.... Shawn, come ON, sometimes it isn't all about the photographer. Actually, most the time it isn't. And it shouldn't be.
The photos are what matter. Not self promotion.

I think I got the point about 5 or 6 posts ago.

If anyone cares to bring tire irons, whip, guns or whatever to the next meeting to drill the point in to my head that I am shameless azzh()le, feel free to do so.

randeezee is correct here... as is shawn t.

the question is worth asking. and in fact, it was best asked... open discussion is good... right?

as for the different crop... i think it would be good to have the lighthouse to the left, as in the second version... but i also would like the to have the shoreline grounding you to the right... both please...

ready? ok... disagree!

Thanks everyone. You should see your banners popping up every now and then on PDD.

There are quite a few up now, but don't let that stop you from making and posting more if you feel like it.

Drop shadows are fine (I especially like it in the Bayfront one), but I'd appreciate it if everyone refrained from altering the logo by changing the colors.
