Too "flashy"?

Sorry about the lack of a technical term in the title.

Anyway, I have been playing with my new 580ex flash this afternoon. Below is one of the photos that I took. (He is sick so he looks really pale in this because he is actually pale.) Does he look too blown out or does this look okay? I took this with the flash bouncing off of the left wall. In Lightroom I darkened up the shadows a bit to try to bring the focus on him.

Highlights do look a bit blown in the left side of the shirt. The truth is, I'm a total flash n00b and I don't even have a guess as to how to avoid that.

If I hadn't known it was shot with a flash, I would've assumed that the shot had been overexposed by a touch.

Yeah, I do see what you mean about it being blown on the left side of the shirt now that you point that out. I need to play with the settings on the flash some more to figure out how to avoid that from happening.

IMHO it looks a bit blown out, the tones in the feet are more appealing.

i Agree with sweetlake, whats he have.. poor guy..

The whites are a bit blown. Did you shoot in RAW? You may be able to recover some of the lost highlights.

Also, Stopping down a bit more for a little more DOF would have helped to get the feet in focus as well.

OK i can actaully reply with some detail this time.. No kids..

Yes did you shoot in RAW? It would be a super easy recovery in lightroom if you did...

The only other knitpicky thing i would suggest is using the rule of third somehow... its more appealing to me anyways..

I would love to see more from your practice todaY!
Oh and wee have the same monkey;)

No, I didn't shoot in RAW for this one, but I did shoot in RAW for a bunch that I shot tonight. I will upload those later tonight. I think I did a bit better on those, but I want to see what you all think.

Ariel, oh yeah, I agree about the rule of thirds. I in no way think that this is well composed, I was just practicing with the flash and not taking time to compose my shots well.

Okay, a couple more from tonight.

Coen showing me his tounge!

Not looking at you!

My husband is out of focus in this last one obviously. I'm still working on using the 50mm with better success.

Oh, and Ariel, he has Fifths Disease and a stomach bug. He seems to be feeling better right now, thankfully.

I like the OOF husband! It adds depth.. I think it would be awsome in BW.. I have been really into BW with lots of depth lately( see 366 blog)

He looks much better!

The only thing i would say is it looks like it needs a contrast boost and the first one has a slight yellow color cast.. I think the last two are supost to be processed in a vinatgish way right?

I want those PJs!

Let me add that I like the feet out of focus on the first shot - and love the shot Ariel has with some feet in focus. It narrows the subject - which is important for a simple person like me.

I also like the DOF on the last one. I've shot many photos at a high f-stop only to look at them later and realize that I hate how flat they are and think what an awesome shot I missed out on with a tighter plane of focus.

I'm a deviant, but I thumb my nose at the rule of thirds! If you look through my profile you'll notice that (for better or worse) I'm a junkie for center weighted photos. I actually really like the composition of the first photo.

Ariel~ I see the yellow tinge to the one of Coen too. I tried to fix it, but didn't quite make it. I wasn't going for any vintage processing necessarily, but did bump the contrast down a bit.

Feel free to play with them, it helps me give some ideas.

Ted~ We all need PJs like those!

I personally like the out of focus feet in the first one too.

Jason~ Thanks for all of your thoughts! Shooting people is not my strength at this point and I have so much to learn. I am doing a shoot for my physician's family this weekend, but she is well aware that she is my first customer and that I can't promise perfect results. :-)

If you're shooting under normal yellow tungsten lights, an 80A filter will color correct to look like outdoor light (~5500K). Of course, nice DSLRs may autocorrect... I'm not sure. My digital P&S doesn't and I can't put a filter on that one... So I have remove the color cast manually.
