Shawn,

Did you remove the front/rear elements for cleaning? It isn't too tough. Because almost every lens I own is old-as-the-hills, I've had to do this for every lens I've purchased. I can help you w/it at the meeting if you like.

I am actually looking for that exact 28mm (for my SMC kit; 50mm + 28mm is most of what I shoot in M42), but just don't have the cash for it right now.

Randeezee, I thought you bought a wide-angle from HBR w/that K-1000?

If i can get them cleaned, that would be great.
I would maybe keep them then. Thanks Jason.

i have a 50mm from hbr and i was just curious about the 28mm for just a bit wider

Shooting a 28 on your film body would be like shooting an 18 on your DSLR.

Your field of view will change from about 45 degrees, to about 75 degrees. I consider that more then "just a bit wider". A 40mm would be 'just a bit' relative to a 50mm, but the change to 28mm is pretty extreme. I have to change my whole shooting mentality when I start getting that wide. Fun focal length though, I can't wait to buy a 25mm for my rangefinder so I can pretty much just forget about focusing.

In my experience, if you get a 28mm, you will want a 24mm, and if you get a 24mm, you will want an 20mm............ etc.

My suggestion would be to go wider than you think you want right now. Just my 0.02.

Shooting wide opens up some ridiculous compositions and opportunities.

Shawn,

Do you have some compressed air and lens cleaner? Bring 'em along.

What kind of tools do we need?

It depends on the lens. Either a small screwdriver (may be phillips or flathead, depends on the lens) or a lens spanner (or both). I don't have a lens spanner, unfortunately, and I just usually find some object laying around that will work. Sometimes you can get them with a carboy stopper, too, so I'll bring one along.

Well, I decided to give the outer elements a good cleaning. I think most of it was on the outside. Now as I look through the lenses they look really clean. I just shot a test roll with both lenses and dropped it off at Walgreens.

Prints came back looking pretty good. I think I am good to go. Thanks for the offer Jason.

It actually takes a pretty serious amount of crap to wreck a lens. I've found that if there is actually haze on the lens -- at least on an enlarger lens -- that can scatter enough light to cause some distortion.

I'd love to see your prints! You gonna keep it and shoot it? I'd be glad to swing you a bottle of D-76 and fixer @ the meeting.

I doubt I will continue to shoot it. I am going to clean everything, set it in the lightbox, take some nice looking shots and hopefully make some money.

I am going to bring 50mm to the meeting, I would like to keep it and I just noticed it has a ring of haze or something on the outer edges and am hoping it can be cleaned.
Do you have a really small phillips? I had one, but the tip broke off inside the head of a screw on the 28mm, shit!

Shawn,

Yup, I'll bring it along. Bring the 28, too, I would like to pop it on my camera and run a test frame or two. See how it stacks up against my 28mm screw mount. I was surprised by the difference between the 50s in screw/k-mount when I got mine from HBR.
