That almost everyone ( that is active anyways) does nature photography... Why are you drawn to that opposed to other things (like children/ people, for me)?

just wondering

There actually is a good mix of genres in this group -- from urban to nature to macro to portrait to music, etc. but it is probably "easiest" to just take the camera with you and shoot stuff outdoors.

I do a lot of nature photography because I enjoy nature. That's about it. I am interested in other types of photography but either haven't had much opportunity to explore those other interests or don't have the equipment to do so (i.e I am really interested in super macro shots, but can't do those kinds of shots with my camera). When shooting nature shots I do try to be creative, such as taking shots low to the ground, being creative with the angles I use, etc.

I agree with HBR, there is a great mix of genres here. I find it refreshing to see a landscape next to a macro next to a turkey and an HBR Penny. For non-nature focused stuff check out these active members (by no means an exhaustive list, but a small sample)

I prefer people- made things. A maple leaf todayis probably going to look like how maple leaf is going to look in 50-100-150 years. A photo of downtown duluth will look totally different then a photo of downtown Duluth in 50-100-150 years. I have this thing about shooting subjects that I know will age, and then in many years be very interesting to whoever finds it.

And sometimes that aging happen real quick. If you would have stopped me while I taking this photo in 2005 and said "Sheraton" I'd have looked at you with a dumbfounded face and said "What?" Now this view is gone, and this print might be hanging up in the Brewhouse in 2073, for that old time Nostolgic view of the city, you know, from before the reds carpet bombed it in 2032.

I really love shooting landscapes and nature shots. I also like cityscapes. I plan to start learning portraiture using natural light, however I need to save up for a good lens. I have my eye on the Pentax DA* 16-50mm. Whooooo, that $900 price tag is scary though.

i love taking candid pictures of people who don't know they're being photographed exactly (not in a creeper way lol) like taking pictures at the christmas city of the north parade was just awesome

i just don't have many subjects to work w/ so my portrait work is limited :(

I really like landscape photography because it gives me a chance to go on an adventure. Getting outside to go for a walk is really relaxing and i get away from all the crap. I try to go places I've never been, or revisit places to capture different lighting/seasons. Landscapes are probably my favorite to look at.
I do try almost anything else though too because the nature shots get too traditional for me sometimes. Making images is like making music. Nothing will work without something else to compare it to, and we need all the styles in order to keep it interesting. It's only natural that there are many nature photographers here because the area is so beautiful. Landscape shots can be the most difficult because it is so dependent on light, and the fact of just getting there can be a struggle. I went out the other day and walked around in the cold with all my equipment for a couple hours and got nothing.
Shawn: I want that 16-50 also - most of my shots are taken at 18mm and I always want a little more.

Shooting nature to me is like playing scales on an instrument, pretty much just technical practice. Though, even if I rarely get stuff from these outings that I want to share, just being outside is relaxing and often worth the trip in itself.
