I've saved enough to get a canon dslr on the cheaper side. Around $450 and I think I've decieded on getting a used canon 20d or that's what I'm thinking right now. Since the 30d has the same image sensor I don't really need the larger lcd it has, and the 40d, well, I really don't want to be carrying around $4,000 of stuff with me everywhere. "including the mac"

Also, what is the main difference between the xt series and the eos10d-40d. Just different case and more features?

Or, I was thinking maybe getting the Canon EOS-1D because I'm really tempted by the full frame image sensor but I'd need to save up more and it's only 4mp...?

So I guess this question is mostly going out to edge because I believe you have a 20d? Would you recomend it?

yeah I like the 20d quite a bit, if I had the moolah I would actually consider a 5d over the 1d even though the 1 is suppose to be the top of the line (5d is 2k, 1d is close to 5k), But closer to our end of the price range, for what I paid for my 20D new, nowadays I would opt for the new 40D, (about $1200).

The newer Rebel Xti has about the same megapix as the 20D, and prices are between 4 and 5 hundred, if that was all I had to spend I think I'd go with a new camera over the used (no, I don't know what the XT stands for), and reading the specs here, www.adorama.com/ICADRXT.html, makes me think it is a great camera for the price.

Side by side comparison

www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebysi...

Everything appears the same except the following
you can't get ISO 3200 with the XTI - Not A Big Deal
XTI is 10mp and the 20d is 8 - XTI wins
Frames per second - XTI 3.0 - 20d 5.0 not a big deal unless you plan to shoot allot of action shots.

I would rather have the XTi without a doubt.

Xt is 8 mp for $500,
www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Rebel-XT-f3-5-5-6/dp/B0007QKN22

xti 10.1 Mp for $650, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I1ZWRC/ref=pd_cp_p_1/104-77...

$150 for an extra 2 MP is definitely worth it.

ya i would say the extra 2mp isn't a huge difference unless you want to print large...but i like having the option to do so [d40x is also 10]

for only $150 more...i'd go w/ the xti. plus it's newer

bhphotovideo.com is one of the most reputable online sellers.

They also happen to be cheaper than Amazon right now for both the xti and xt

I can confirm B&H is good, Adorama is also good and trustworthy, those are the top two and the prices are pretty equivalent.

the XT series will be tons lighter... however... i take my camera everywhere, and beat the snot out of it. i have the canon 10d, old old... but more or less the same body as 20d/30d. although the newer ones are a little smaller, and feel better in hand... the biggest issue for me is that i beat the snot out of my cameras. i love the magnesium alloy body. they are not indestructable, as i have toasted one 10d, they are much much stronger than the high density plastic. my vote... 20d based upon your original post.

oh... you can get a firmware hack to allow the XT type cameras shoot at iso 3200, if that is at all interesting to you...
