Harassment?

Today I did some shooting in the Port Terminal area past Garfield Av. and beneath the Blatnik Bridge. I pretty much stuck to the area around the fishing pier and the public access docks, and that was enough for one day.

But I couldn't help but notice all the cool industrial stuff ... the ships being loaded and unloaded, the cement plant, etc.

Has anyone ever been harassed by the authorities for taking photos down there? I noticed a sign that said the area was patrolled by US Customs and the Coast Guard, and that "all vehicles are subject to inspection." Are the roads private?

If we could get away with it, this would be a fantastic place for a photo walk.

"industrial stuff"

as long as we all have good sneakers on we should be able to get away :)

from my perspective... i believe that this is a must... and that they should be taunted.

i have never been harrassed... however, a very good friend of mine was "forced" to turn over her film for shooting pix of a refinery. i cannot describe in words all of the four letter equivalent words that flew from my mouth when i heard that... but... in the end... i wasn't there. it was her choice. her film. i completely disagree with her decision to turn it over... but...

I definitely have gotten some hostile questions from time to time in places one would think of as marginal. Though I've taken some photos in that same area in the past Barrett and no one has said anything. It might even be beneficial to have a small group as opposed to a loner. From my limited time down there I think the roads that are private are well marked.

I've been harassed in the Boston subway, you know, 9/11. Parking lots. Shopping areas in LA. But not the port terminal.

THE DAMN MILLER HILL MALL!!!!

the most recent incident occurred on the release of halo 3. my friend and i were gonna make a documentary about waiting for the game, even though we weren't even getting it ourselves. we were just gonna ask people how excited they were, how long they'd been in line...etc. after we took 5 steps out of our car [in the parking lot!] the mall security told us we couldn't photograph in the mall. so we said we'd only be on the parking lot. they then told us we couldn't even take pictures in the parking lot. we said, "alright...that's kinda ridiculous" and walked away [filming] to our car...got in...and left w/ sunken hearts and forgotten dreams of stardom

Great idea Barrett. I was down at UPS the other day, noticed the potential of the area. Don't think it would be a problem photographing. Then again I'm surprised everyday. A few action shots of some gentle photographer being tasered would be a nice addition to my portfolio.

Please note that the Photo Rights does not say anything about what you can and can't do with the images, mainly in the area of people. Editorial use (and I believe flickr falls under this umbrella) does not require a release, but most other uses do. If you are taking shots of people, get a release from them to cover your ass.

I had an interesting experience in LA's china town where I was shooting the market, you know a tourist place. I shot a picture in the parking lot and these guys went nuts. You can Imagine how happy they were when I shot them...

Ted, I love that you took a picture of them when they were already pissed at you. That makes me laugh.

To everyone, when is the Port Terminal photowalk going to happen? That is one of the places that I really want to shoot.
