Club Officers

This is a call for any of those who want to be elected "officers" of the DPG.

Huh? Officers -- what the hell for?

Well, in the meeting, more than one time the idea of gaining funds and using funds came up. There were different options discussed on how this money could be raised and how it would benefit the members.

In order to do this in the safest way possible, you could all just say, "Hey, Brian, take all of our money and we trust you will do the right thing," (how many of you really feel comfortable with that idea?) or get a bank account for the club in which 2 signatures would be required to withdraw funds. The bank would require that the club have an operating "executive board" consisting of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.

What would the responsibilities be? Really not much. President would most likely be a figurehead whose only responsibility would be the second signature on the checks written from the account. The vice-president would have to run the meetings when the president cannot run one (wait, meetings aren't even handled this way.) Secretary's job is already done in the threads posted (maybe if we got really enthusiastic, meeting notes could be posted on a new thread.) The biggest job would be the treasurer who is in charge of keeping the books straight -- ie: balancing a checkbook.

An election could be held if more than one person entered a particular "race."

So, any takers?????

I'll put my hat in for vice-president! :)

i'm throwing my name in the hat for the position of "assistant to the vice-president" i know it's not listed above, but why not add another position/member to the cabinet?

I say the group should be a monarchy

Let me preface this by saying upfront I don't want an officer job, I have my own agendas within the group and that is to find ways to get the artwork of others (and myself) out in public view as well as the fun and educational stuff.

Ok, here is what I think and take it with a grain of salt. I can see how having officers may have benefits for the group, however as it stands the only office that has any responsibility is the office that sounds the least prestigious, and while it seems understood that the pres and vice pres wouldn't actually do much, if nothing else you are able to put it on your CV. I think if you are going to hold those titles you should have some unique duties, if the reason to have officers is so we can apply for grants then officers should seek out grants, or perhaps unless there is a very specific reason to have three separate officers I think either the president or vice president should also act as treasure with the other being the counter signatory.

I hope this isn't coming off as strident because I don't mean it to be, I just think it may be unfair to have glamor/useless titles at the same time having mundane/responsible titles. You notice no one piped up to say they wanted to be treasurer? We should either combine the offices or decide who the treasure is first before the gilt titles, cause as it stands without a treasure the other officers are completely useless.

Anyhow, whatever the final decision is I plan on just continuing doing what I have been doing.

BTW I enjoyed last night's meeting quite a bit.

Truth of the matter is, I don't believe we can open an account for the club without 4 names on the roster for officers. Beyond that, whatever their duties (or lack thereof) makes no difference as long as the club agrees. If we can't get someone to act as treasurer, then we have to come up with other ideas on how (or if) to handle any flow of funds through the club.

That is just the way it is.

Here is what I see so far:

Moe -- president
Me -- vice-president
Randall -- Assistant to the vice-president (let's call it secretary.)
And no one yet to serve as the person to hang onto the checkbook.

The question may be, is membership ready for this kind of "organization" and "commitment"? I see it as very little (if any, really) change to what happens now, but could lead to a more organized force in the future, especially if membership (and contributions to the group) keeps increasing. Are we ready for this yet? Maybe it will take a little time, but the seed must be planted.

How about this... Brian if you don't mind would you take on the roll of treasurer to get this thing started. I will also be on the roster along with Randall and we need one more? No title just 4 names to get a checking account so we can organize any funds that DPG takes in for shows, donations, etc etc.

That sounds fine by me -- I will be the "guy handling the deposits and checks" and will get the paperwork necessary for starting the account. I will use Wells Fargo (since that is what I use for business and personal accounts) unless someone screams bloody murder in which case we can certainly use a different bank. I will also be the first to make an annual "donation" of $20 to the account.

I will also list Aaron and Randall on the paperwork and if that is not enough, I will make another call to members about someone stepping up. I will post anything that is important, otherwise, we can finalize this in October.

Great thanks Brian... Add $20 from me... Any other donations are welcome... Just post here or contact Brian or Moe...

Yeah, I'll throw in a $20 as well.

IF you end up needing a fourth name and there are no titles associated you can use mine (Edgewood Smith), and after a given period of time (6 mos/a year?) if you want to pass it off i would be willing to hold the checkbook for an equal amount of time. I just didn't want to be the first, nor did I want a title if I was unwilling to hold the position of responsibility.
And... thanks Brian.
